Southern California Kayak Fishing Adventures
Bolsa Chica State Beach Kayak Fishing
A beautiful August morning with warm water, hot sun, and amazing kayak fishing made this trip to Bolsa Chica State Beach one to remember. All that and fishing with a good friend… it doesn’t get any better than that.

Really big Calico and Sand Bass and an epic battle with a Giant Black Sea Bass made this a very special day of open ocean kayak fishing!
Late Spring Kayak Fishing at La Jolla / Searching for Yellowtail
มุมมอง 2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
In my opinion, La Jolla is probably the most beautiful, scenic kayak fishing destinations in Southern California. Whenever you launch your kayak from La Jolla Shores, the goal is to catch a yellowtail, which is never an easy task. The search is on! #losthorizonfishing #lajolla #yellow tail SD Fish and Sips TH-cam: youtube.com/@SDFishandSips?si=NQuUIya79XeOFK7B Instagram: sdfishand...
Kayak Fishing Bolsa Chica Beach | Fish Finder Upgrade

The morning may have started off slow, but a fish after fish finish made this kayak fishing session at Bolsa Chica State Beach super fun. I recently upgraded my Lowrance Elite FS 7 Fish Finder with the Navionics Platinum Plus marine charts. The bottom contour “relief shading” is an absolute game changer! #losthorizonfishing #saltwaterfishing #stealthtribe
Catalina Island Halibut Fishing!
มุมมอง 2.3K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this episode, we target halibut while fishing the west end of beautiful Catalina Island. The morning started off a little slow, but before we knew it, the fishing turned on! Not only did we score a few quality, legal size halibut, but also a couple of tasty rock fish! The day also included two fish stealing seals that added a little extra excitement to an epic day on the water!

This was one of those unexpected days where the fishing was on fire all morning long! And… just to add a little icing on the cake, the ocean conditions were spectacular with warm water, light winds, and beautiful skies! It was non-stop calico and sand bass action from beginning to end.

💪🏼🎣
I was thinking I was too old to fish in my inflatable boat 16ft sea eagle along the coast in Southern California with a Honda 9.9 outboard motor
@@andrepayne9566 you’re never too old to go fishing!😃🎣
You da man. I wish I had those cajones to go out that far in a kayak. Thank you for sharing
Man I lost a fin in my pedal drive in a river with bugger all current pushing for speed. No way would I put my Hobie out thru heavy surf. Light maybe. Not heavy
Is that a wetsuit you're wearing? Also does it keep you dry?
@@seasickfishermanreport2800 Normally, I always wear a farmer John wetsuit, which is a full wetsuit, but with no sleeves. However, the water temperature was so warm on this particular morning, so I just wore diving tights, which just give me a little extra sun protection. Unfortunately for me, I’ve had a number of issues with skin cancer over the last 30 years, so I do my best to stay covered up.😃🎣
Well done sir. My favorite tutorial on YT.
did u park at cabrillo beach parking lot and wheel it out to the ocean side of cabrillo? BTW reallyt enjoy your vids....keep it going!
Yes… that’s exactly what we did. It’s an excellent kayak launch spot. Typically, the surf is very small there… just a little shore break.
What pants are those
Thanks for sharing your way to tie the FG. Also love your place where you live ? Tight Lines
So from Cabrillo beach you just go right towards PV?
Seems like when I try it with 8lb floro it’s waaay harder
Wow Dan your the man!!! John and deb
I really wanna kayak fish but I’m scared shitless. Can’t get over the what ifs
You might be surprised to discover that once you are out there, things that you fear may not seem nearly as bad as you had imagined.
Sounds like some so cal fishing.... always a good summer when you got bass thumb
“…fuck”
Wet ride! I got throw off my stealth for the first time, 4ft breaking wave sent me flying like a torpedo. Kayak went uncontrollably to the left and the wave broke down on top of me. My quick release paddle came free, but the bungee cord broke like 10lb test. Good thing I held onto my paddle
Haha… all in days work!🎣😃
So far, I’ve only got knocked out of the kayak once on the way out… but on the back to the beach, that’s whole other story!🤣🤣
That’s cool 😅you ok Dan
All good except for that barred surfperch I found in my wetsuit!🎣🤣🤣
No you couldn't get me into a kayak no matter how hard you tried I could never keep the stupid things up right at least you can maneuver in a canoe and if I was out where he was at I'd be in a canoe if not a full size boat God bless and good fishing
Thanks for watching Dale. It’s actually amazingly peaceful out there and definitely my happy place.🎣😃
Ive never understood the point of fishing and not eatting the catch
What if every fisherman kept every legal size fish they caught? Eventually, only small undersized fish would remain. Also, some fish like Calico Bass are really slow growing, so it’s always best to release the big ones. On the flip side, Calicos do make really tasty ceviche. For me, I’ll keep Bluefin, Yellowtail, Dorado, and Halibut… but pretty much everything else I release to live another day. 🎣😃
@@losthorizonfishing107 You really think the demand is so high that all fish would cease to exist? That is laughable.
Many, many fishermen in addition to myself practice “catch and release.” The fact that you don’t understand why is definitely not a problem for me.🎣😃
@@DamienSpires He's a lot nicer than I wouldve been.
@@losthorizonfishing107 Good that it's not your problem (though you felt the need to comment). Hope you have a nice day.
Fine catch sir!
Loving the videos, you got yourself a new subscriber. Keep it up!
Thanks for watching!😃🎣
🤦♂️
Thank you 🙏for showing the fish!
First
Crazy thing is, I think that size is BARELY a breeder. They grow hella slow and take forever to become breeders compared to other fish in socal waters. They used to be so abundant kinda sucks you can't keep em like you used to.
Yeah… Black Sea Bass have been on the California’s protected species list since the late 1970’s. In Mexico, just two hours from here they are completely legal to catch and cook.🎣😃
Hey-oh! Nice video Dan. That was a great day on the water. I even gave them a little singing action 😂😂
Yeah buddy… excellent weather, good fishing, and fishing with a good friend… it doesn’t get any better than that!🎣😃
great day on the water as always!
Now that’s a good day
Glad to see you out there. Puts a smile on my face. I’m envious of your great adventures. 👍🏽💯🇺🇸💪🏽😎
Looks like a great day on the water, enjoy your editing.
Dan that’s what I did I bought 3k kayak and 200 fish finer 😂 3yrs ago but I learn that I really don’t use it for fish rather to find depth and structure. Being honest I caught for fish when I forgot the fish finer 😂
@@freshsaltyfries5078 when I first bought my Stealth, I bought a really inexpensive Lowrance Fish Finder and epoxied the small transducer inside the hull. The sonar worked okay, but only in depths less than 100 feet. Because the transducer was inside the hull, side scan and down scan didn’t work at all. Water temperature was all always totally inaccurate. I later upgraded to a much higher end Lowrance Elite FS 7 with the large 3-in-1 transducer (externally mounted) and all the bells and whistles work amazing! It’s much easier to catch live bait, find fish, and locate structure!🎣😃
@@losthorizonfishing107 😀awesome I will try a upgrade
Yeaaa! Happy to see ya on the water again!
Welcome back 😮nice work
Glad to see you post again! I’ve been waiting for a new update.
Few years late and you probably won't see this, I gonna try. Any tips on catching Spotted Bay Bass from the shore. near that park area
Spotted Bay Bass will always be hanging out near structure…. Docks, rocks, and eel grass. I recommend a 15 pound fluorocarbon leader with either a 1/4oz Hookup Bait (Red Crab) or 1/4oz Warbaits Underspin with a keitech swim bait.🎣😃
Ive just watched 30 FG knit videos. This one was by far the best. Thanks.
going to do the same this Sunday!
Cabrillo Beach as in San Pedro?
Yes…. Cabrillo, which is in San Pedro.🎣😃
So I’m in the same fishing region as you in OC. I’d like to surf launch out of Bolsa more often but how do you determine where you launch where the surf break isn’t so deep or do you just go regardless? I use a Stealth as well.
I almost always launch at Tower 17, which is about 200 yards north of the little jetty. Fortunately, the deep trench that was just a few feet off the beach has filled in nicely, which makes the launch mush less challenging. However, as you can see from watching my videos, Bolsa is not a flat beach, so coming back to the beach is always a fun adventure. The best thing about fishing from a Stealth is even if you end up in the water while negotiating the surf, all your gear stays safe and dry! Which model Stealth are you fishing out of?🎣😃
@@losthorizonfishing107 I appreciate the tip! And definitely have flipped over a few times from other places haha just trying to be better every time! I’m fishing a Stealth Fusion 480 but eventually want to go up to a ProFisha 475 😊
For launching at Bolsa, I would recommend going on a morning when the tide is really low… the lower the better. You also want to pick a day when the surf report indicates 1-2 foot or 2-3 foot. Another thing that can be helpful is to pick a day when the short interval wind swell is under 2 feet or if you’re really lucky a morning where there is no short interval wind swell. The Stealth fusion 480 is an awesome fishing machine and an excellent choice for open ocean kayak fishing! All your fishing gear is safe and secure inside the hull and you will be much safer in windy, white capped, ocean conditions.
The noise of the ocean overtaking...
I love your videos they’re the best
Thanks so much for watching.🎣😃
Why not keep the calicos ?
@@MH-oc4de Calicos and Sand Bass I always release. Yellowtail, Halibut, Tuna, and Dorado I keep.🎣😃
If you'll notice in most of the TH-cam videos it seems to be a fad or trend now for all the fishermen to release their sand bass and calicos. It is what it is I guess. I remember back in the 60s and 70s how good they were to eat. Different generation and different time. 😊
great inspiration to all Americans to achieve goals no matter what or the age.
Thanks!🎣😃
great shore landing. The GoPro's never show how large those breakers really are. Can just imagine how good those black sea bass fillets must have been on the dinner table years ago...
I will do the same when I am 70 years old. Hopefully
I do 21 wraps followed by a touch of super glue at the cut tag end to stop the braid fuzz. Never had an issue and works great.
Great vid!! Watching from New Zealand
Awesome
Dan, do you park at Bolsa Chica when you launch? I never want to pay the $20, lol
I always purchase the California State Beach Pass every year. I live just across the street from the north end of Bolsa Chica, so I’m over there a lot.🎣😃
@losthorizonfishing107 makes sense, how often you launch there. I was thinking about trying to launch from dog beach in huntington, since the parking is cheaper.
No fun. I live in Santa Cruz California and we see great whites on our kayaks all the time. But one day, a 16 footer came right next to me. I didn’t go on my kayak for another two years after that.
