Don't forget that 2m/1.25m/70cm also count as bands for winter field day. For VHF/UHF, have a good external antenna and not rely on your HT antenna. Try and get as many multipliers as you can. I am an experienced winter camper, make sure your have a proper insulated sleeping pad. An air mattress has zero insulating capabilities. Just make sure to have back ups for everything. I heard that the new cloud logging software World Radio League is going to have a live contest scoreboard. Have fun and be safe.
That mast in the crate with the propane tank is such a perfect fit! Seems like you are still liking the FX4CR? Have fun at Rathtrevor. I hope to get on the air from home at the very least so hopefully make contact with you.
I absolutely love the FX4CR! Would definitely recommend to anyone doing hf portable!
@@darryldowney Maybe one day I'll get one. Maybe I should sell my FT-891 and grab one? :)
@@ve7ajk I would never tell anyone to get rid of a radio! But these are pretty mind blowing for what they are in such a tiny package.
@@darryldowney Hahahaha. We'll see! Also I love how Rathtrevor is a 2fer. I try and stay up there every summer and have activated on the beach during low tide. It's perfect.
At $200 it may be one of the best, but certainly not the best value. And with no programming software compatible, maybe not all that.
I have nothing but problems with Chirp. I have tried all the downloads for Windows and get errors on install or errors or no response to the radio. I have tried Baofeng and Tway radios and several cables. Major frustration
I really like the portable go bag style.
"link bellow"... no link 😫why do people do this? also people should know: you can buy a 20$ carbon telescopic whip and use it as an antenna mast. way cheaper than the "ham" version and its the same thing. always buy a bit longer and remove the top 3-4 section.
Let me tell you why "people do this" it happens because this is not my full time job so it doesn't get that kind of energy or attention. I shoot the video on day, maybe edit and add titles another day, and then... as you have pointed out, when I uploaded the video on yet another day, I then have to add titles, description, tags, age restriction, geotags, audio copyright information and then yes, I forgot to add the one link I said I was going to add. The link is now below as well as below your comment! bit.ly/40iyZgQ I personally like the SotaBeams mast over the cheap alternatives because the quality is top notch, can easily be disassembled and cleaned along with QUICKLY shipping the replacement sections when and if you break them. I broke the top section and they didn't even charge me to replace it, only the shipping and it was shipped faster to my door from the UK then anything I've ever ordered from the US or China. And the best part is supporting another company that is supporting this hobby I love so much. Thanks for another comment!
Welp, The links not working. You will have to use the good ole search bar.
@@darryldowney no trouble! thank you for the details, i know the internet is becoming more and more complex its a pain for us humans. i was just complaining a little bit, its a French thing lol! i wish you the best. may we have a mild winter this year!
Nice setup
@@MkmeOrg thank you!
for some reason my rig is not storing the freq to memory ive tried multiple times.
on my radio the first 20 channels (1-20) have a CH next to the number. I am unable to program any of those channels with the CH. The others program fine. Those 1 - 20 numbers I didn't not program and I reset the radio and nothing changed. so there's that
Nice!
Nice!
As a fellow Canadian Ham (VE3XBW) how does one get in contact with VE7LSE about his antenna offerings? I saw Jeramay of KL7EC outdoors (Alaska youtuber) use some Nite Ize Figure 9 carabiners to help stake out his mast. It makes adjusting the tension of the guy lines easier.
Where do you buy your radios?
I got the FX4CR directly from Yu (BG2FX), his website is here bg2fx.com/fx-4cr-transceiver-prod
What kind of backpack is that where can I get one?
The pack is from AliExpress, I cant find a link to the exact one anymore but a search for "tactical backpack" should get you something similar.
Nice! I really like it. You made a video about the VR-N76. Where can I buy it in Canada BC?
I ordered mine directly from Vero, our local ham club did a group buy to get a bit of a discount. www.verotelecom.com/VR-N76-Dual-Band-Handheld-Radio-p2511333.html
Good video, what would be a version of this with DMR be like, or is there a brand/model already like that?
Subbed! Great video Darryl, thanks. Looking forward to some setup and usage vids on these units Pretty cool and very interesting features, looks legitimately as though its being targeted towards a prepper/tactical market. its like ATAKs without the need to have a server and third party software running on your phone and also have the ball ache of setting it all up. it does it all for you in one package. OSMand has a similar feature but without the comms. some of the early Garmin units in the rhino range could do this but not with the mapping. Bluetooth connectivity is ace but also has its drawbacks in a conflict zone. search and rescue could also put this to good use. even the remote PTT/speakers little clip looks like its perfectly suited for a molle loop. Cant find many units for sale on Aliexpress and defo not in that colour that you have. any chance of a link?
@@tangozulu I picked mine up right from Vero. www.verotelecom.com/VR-N76-Dual-Band-Handheld-Radio-p2511333.html
I really like mine. It’s certainly better than a Boafang. If it had a digital mode it would be great.
I see that you are immersed enough in the world of radios to prompt me with another question. I would be grateful for an answer. If you had to choose between the Gm-30 Plus and Retevis HA1G? Which would you choose for yourself? I understand the key difference in functions, but I am interested in the overall quality of sound and signal transmission. As far as I have seen, the HA1G has a real output power twice as much as the Gm-30 plus. What would you say about the comparison of these two radios?
@@Cheusow Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with gmrs radios, here in Canada our regulations about gmrs are lacking heavily. That being said, I obviously do have the HA1G and can honestly say it is a fantastic radio. Very impressed with the build quality.
@@darryldowney thanks a lot.
I’ve got one of these on the way, one thing I hardly seen mentioned is with the fact of the radio remote control via the app on your phone, your phone practically runs as a wireless KDU, the only thing ive seen on the market close to this is the prc152 clones that has replica KDU’a, unfortunately those radios have rubbish internals and cost a arm and a leg for the looks. What I didn’t know is how extensive the HT app actually is, if it’s set up correctly and you’re all on the vgc ecosystem then it can essentially act as a temu version of TAK by the sounds of it, really looking forward to getting my hands on it and it all goes well I will be recommending it to my team for our main analogue radios going forward
Its a fantastic unit especially if you are working with a team of people that have them and can utilize some of the "team" or "group" features.
Just another clone Nothing more cheap genetic Chinese radio
@@londo776 a clone of what? Please let me know, I would love to compare!
Would hardly call this a clone, I do think this handheld is pioneering especially for the price point and the capabilities it offers
I couldn't agree more.
A clone of what other radio?
What's the name of this android app?
@@RollinJo "ht" simple two letters
www.verotelecom.com/ Link to both android and iOS app on the Vero website, a bit down on the page.
Thank you very much
Why the all devices from China looks like a toy 🧸
I don't know why, but I appreciate the selection of colours!
Ok, the software seems more refined but, it reminds me of the TidRadio H8...
Does it work with HAM frequency?
I'm trying to choose between the VR-N76 and possibly one of the Wouxun Radios with the Superheterodyne receivers. What are you thoughts?
Very different radios, depends on that you are going to do with it I guess!
If you’re a hobbyist and want the best receiver for amateur use then ide say get the wouxun. If you’re looking for a new radio from a practicality standpoint especially for field use then I would lean more into the vgc, I do have a slight bias in that however so obviously take what I say with a pinch of salt If you’re really struggling sort out a pro and con list for both radios and start ticking off what you think you need and want and see what comes out on top
😂😅😂😂😅
💦💦
is this ios compatible
@@mackperry9923 the app does exist for iOS, however I have not tried it. I have been told that it's functionality is not quite the same as the android version.
his site says they are in stock but he wont answer my emails
how much xtra cost for the rails and the fan ?
@@bobbyt3451 it's not offered anymore unfortunately!
@darryldowney ok I probably won't order a radio then because I'm sure that radio is going to have heat issues thanks KD9PMH 73s
@bobbyt3451 the new one has no rails, but does have a fan built in.
@darryldowney ok great thanks KD9PMH 73s
I have had mine for a month. I really love mine but let me share a few more cons. 1. Dual channel assignments must be from the same channel bank and if you want APRS running on more than one, it must be programmed in the same slot through your populated banks. 2. You cannot FPP channels so this must be done through the app. 73 VA7LBA
Yes, thanks for the heads up!
Great overview of the N76! Glad I got one and have been having fun exploring its capabilities.
I dropped the ball on filming this in 4K, filmed half the video before I realized. Not going to happen again!
I wouldn't worry about it😊. Photographer Tony Northrup says some of his most praised recorded videos were in 1080P on a nice camera with lens
Most people won’t even notice since most people watch content on a phone or tablet.
Great video, I kinda want one 😄
thank you for the information, 73
Thx for the video, the logo is cool, but as there are many features and parameters on Chirp or T6UV, it would be great to explain them. A lot of people make videos to show how we connect the Baofeng to PC, but so hard to have tips about how to improve the device ! See you soon if you're on the way to do that, 73 from France ;)
I think this way will repeat signal only at one direction
I just programmed mi K5plus and also is not listed I thought it was something not ik my radio but apparently is CHIRP right?
Sorry, I don't think I can help. If it's not listed I wouldn't recommend try any others, I would recommend looking up if there are any other brands that produce the same radio and see if anyone has had success that way. Good luck!
@ thank you mate!

Very helpful video. Thank you very much....quick question.... is it possible to save into different groups? Like repeaters in channels 1-8. Then EMS channels 11-20..... I haven't figured out how to leave some blank channels in between
@@markm592 absolutely you can move them. Try right clicking and I think the option to "move row up or move row down" may be what you are looking for. It will appear in the radio in whatever order they are in chirp. Let me know if that helps.

Pretty cool and simple Darryl! HF mobile is fantastic part of hamradio and seriously DX hunting with minimum cost for skillfull operator. Hope to "catch"" you one day. 👍 73, S51X

Clean install and the best mod ive see so far you have add the ground!!! most people use only magnetic mount butr they make poor ground, i've use lookalike method but i0ve scraped paint on the screw to better contact (and add nail trasparent gel for insulation and prevent rust)

@@alessandroconcas I need to add more farrite to my setup for sure.
Great video, love the setup, it gets you results, thats the important part
@@VE7GGH thanks Greg! Yep, results are decent, not as good as setting up my 100ft inverted v, but good enough to make a few hundred qso's off my roof.
That's quite the ghetto setup for your 10m antenna. Since you have your G90 mounted in your car, do you have another HF radio in your home shack? I plan on building a portable GO box using a G90 in spring time. My wallet needs to recover from Black Friday shopping for radio gear. 😁
It may be ghetto, but it works great! I don't operate at home on HF (unless I'm sitting in my car) but my neighbourhood especially has a decently bad noise floor. I do run hamsticks (15, 20m, 80m usually) on this mag mount as well. I currently have this HF setup along with an FX4CR Kit that I run out of a backpack for POTA/SOTA that I use a 6 band inverted v-dipole and 23ft Sotabeams mast. Sometimes I will swap the G90 into my Cherokee in basically the same configuration, depends on the adventure.
