Jet JWL-1236 Lathe Speed-Change Pulley Repair

Jet JWL-1236 Lathe Speed-Change Pulley Repair
Excellent video! It raised a few questions on the size of belt. I recently bought a used Jet 1236 in upstate NY. The belt looks exactly like the one you have. I contacted JET, they informed me I had the wrong size. Was this a stock belt for your machine, or Is there a better reason why this belt is different? I'm new to turning.
I thought the belt I had was stock. I bought the lathe used and don't think the orginal owner changed it.
@@KnotnowWood Thank you for your reply. Perhaps mine is stock also. I will have to call Jet again and cross reference it again. This video is excellent and this is exactly what I need to do to perform proper maintenance. Please post more videos of this! Thank you Sir.
Very informative! Thankyou
I can't thankyou enough for this video, i watched it a few times and referred back to it. as my jet 1236 basically stopped working. It gave me the confidence to follow your steps to fix it! I am now back up and running smoother than ever!!
Also I'd like to add there was a hand wheel on the end of mine, took a while to find info on that but it had to be removed before I could remove the housing, its a left-handed thread, easy peasey once i found that info. Also was certain I needed a new belt but once i got the pully's cleaned and un-ceased it all works like a charm!
Not boring at all, thank you for sharing bud !
after watching i am going to try Anti-seize on the shafts my problem is have to stand on the handle to make it change speeds
Do you have a video on replacing the starter capacitor or oiling the motor?

I was not boring 😊
Make more wood working videos and the people will watch just give it time
I’m trying to figure out where the water goes because the housing of the exhaust fan is not really rainproof
Hi. I just bought a version of this lathe second hand and in need of a lot of tlc. I need to source parts. Could you advise.
th-cam.com/video/acxU8ItTDUE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5zRNm0CkuAOc_GwO&t=146 To remove the belt you must set to the slowest speed first, which you do right, but what you are missing is that after stopping the motor, you must set it to the highest speed to pull the spindle pulleys apart again. That releases the tension which you otherwise must fight.
Thank you very much… I have not been able to find another TH-cam video that showed how to install those small barrel hinges
Thank you this gave me some great ideas
Nice
Excellent ! Thanks
there are 3 retaining clips on the spindle pully side.. Mainly if you dont put that "snap ring" on the end of the spindle shaft it will push that pulley right off.. Don't ask how I know.
Thank you for showing this. I, too, have a Grizzly G0555LX and 2 years old that started making that exact sound. I'm going to tighten my drive wheel when I go to my shop and hopefully that'll work. You are the only one that I've found that addresses this issue.
8 years later, your video has helped me and my team to repair our lathe. Ours is an older discontinued Grizzly model, but the mechanisms are identical. Grizzly tech support was great, but your video helped fill in some gaps. Thank you!
my MODEL G5979 12" X 35‐1/2" SWIVEL HEAD WOOD LATHE hard to turn the speed handle new belt etc ugh
Well done!
Nice Job. It wont work for my steel building like this but your problem solving in your specific situation was great.
I ordered one of these saws and will pick it up tomorrow at the post office. Can't wait to get cutting some wood for my model trains both HO and O scale. Thanks for the review. Cheers from eastern TN
Those this fan have have outward exhaust inward cooling?
This fan is an exhaust fan only--air only goes from inside the garage to outside.
@knotnowwoodworking I'm looking for a Intake/ outtake fan for my workshop any recommendations
@@danielcarcamo6336 Sorry, no recommendations. You'll have to shop around.
@knotnowwoodworking Thank you for responding. I'll look around.
Great video. I put the luvers on the outside and the fan on the inside. Thanks for the great idea.
Have the same lathe and did the same process, but with both sets of pulleys. Works gtreat. Question, For this lathe does anuyone have a sugestión for using a fostner bit with the existing tail stock, or how to Install a morse tapar? TYhank you!
I have a Jet 14-42 with this same drive arrangement. Who did you call for support?
Could you change the lowest speed on these by making different sized pulleys?
Anyone know the size of that bearing? Mine was starting to get noisy and I greased it, however being that it’s a lathe and lots of dust, I like the idea of a sealed bearing. Bonus points for a part number!
I have a mejix 900 tb couldn’t find any manuals online till your video randomly popped up. I can finally fix it now. The exact same just different name
If you need a new variable speed pulley, Speed Selector makes pulleys that replace the Reeves, Hi-Lo, TB Woods and Lovejoy pulleys that went out of business or got bought. Most are in stock or Speed Selector will custom make if needed. They have an actual engineering department; very helpful.
Jeff Beck ! "Constipated Duck". Excellent Choice !! Look it up folks ! Great video.
Did you put a cover over the fan in the winter
No, I just watched for leaks and never had any. I wasn't too concerned about cold air coming in, I had a heater in the garage. And besides, I only did limited work in the winter (detached garage with no insulation).

You should change your post to "Loose bolt, not bearings".. since folks are not looking for electric stuff here.
Does the 2x2" hubless (flexible) coupling fit the 2.5" diameter dust port? Or does it need to be a 2.5" flexible coupling? Thanks!
I don't have the jointer anymore, but I'm pretty sure it was the 2x2 hubless coupling that fit the 2.5" port. If you buy it at Home Depot, there's no problem returning it if I'm not remembering correctly. Plumbing sizes are nominal, hardly anything measures the same as the rated size.
Thanks for clarifying!! Like others, this tip is gunna really help me!!
It's not as powerful as I thought it would be, but it works very well. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGjG43--gYqIoT4Xkur2PqCrtbKwTv2h6 There are three options to circulate air, and best of all a remote control for us lazy people. Installation was a breeze (no pun intended). It actually took longer to open the box then it did putting the side extenders on and sitting it in the window opening. It's a perfect alternative when you want airflow, but not the AC. Just might order another one for a different room. UPDATE: Bought another one like I said. They work great. Why not have two...
Very Helpful video as I attempt a similar feat with my 2 car detached garage in SC. Did you happen to have a thermometer in your shop pre-fan and post fan? Wondering just what kind of temp difference it made. I might hook mine up to a XMAS lights timer so it goes on for 5-10 minutes every couple hours during the day.
No, I never checked the temps, but could feel the air flow in the shop, which also helped with the air quality. Thanks for the comment.
It wasn't a boring video. Thank you for posting.
I think you needed to read the instructions first. You totally screwed this install up! The fan, in one piece, mounts to the exterior wall from the inside. Please, if anyone views this video on how to install an exhaust fan. Don't. What else does this guy work on? Heaven help us all. Argh@
Thanks for going ahead with the video. I too was ready to replace the bearing, even though it didn’t sound quite like a bearing. The wheel felt tight, but I will try this fix.
Ive had to do that job twice on my lathe. Different brand, basicslly tge same lathe. I really dislike tge reeves drive system as Ive constantly had problems with it jamming. Ive got to service the *#*@#* thing again...and am thinking of throwing those pulleys out and harvesting a set of pulleys from a cheap.old drill press that will hopefully fit. Then Ill add a cheap speed controller to it for the infrequent times i need to use a slower speed than fixed pulleys can provide. Whoever designed the system should be sh0t.
I couldn't agree more. I sold my 1236 and got a Jet JWL-1221VS. MUCH better. Life is good again...
2:59 to 8:17 you can see the pulley on the motor stuck in the 'Slow' position. 8:18 it springs closed as it should. Seemed to operate ok though. Worth keeping an eye on
great idea I have done that also. sure saves time and effort
Ok opened with Jeff Beck…good opening.
How much meshin sar
I have a question about your dust collection setup. I just got this jointer and want to hook the dust port up to my 2.5” shop vacuum hose. You mentioned that you used a 2” x 2” flexible coupler to connect the two. Won’t the coupler be too small (specifically by 0.5”) to get the mouth of the coupler over the 2.5” dust port? I am trying to do the same setup on my jointer so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated?
A 2"x2" flex coupler is intended for a 2" nominal pipe. The pipe does't really measure 2", it's larger, so it fits the shop vac and jointer just fine. Ok, I just went and measured to be sure. The fitting on my 2.5" shop vac hose is just under 2.25". The flex coupler is just over 2.25", so it fits fine.
@@knotnowwoodworking thank you so much for clarifying! I will run to the hardware store tomorrow to grab the parts. Thank you again. You really helped me out with a problem that was bugging me.
I want to thank you. I was having issues with my grizzly lathe with the Reeves speed control. After watching your video I was able to fix it. Thanks again.
What a nice guy!
can install this on my ceiling ?
No. According the the manual, this fan is designed to be mounted verically (i.e., in a wall).
Great job!!!
