Like you, I’ve been in love with the Big Blow for years now and I was amazed when Scale Trains announced what their first locomotive was going to be. I had been watching Scale Trains as they gradually stood up their business on FB and since all the original founders of ST had worked with other major model manufacturers in our hobby I had no doubt they’d do great things and we weren’t let down. I sold one of my firearms to fund the purchase of my Rivet Counter Big Blow cab #5 from their first run, no way I’d be able to afford the Museum version but both versions are great investments. Notice how the value has held up since the release? Most of my models are second hand where sometimes they’re minor projects but they’re all quality, well detailed and have sound installed but for obvious more rare models, I knew I better move quick and I was right. the train set versions seen to be better in the fact that it dues not have the wires going to the tender but its not dcc ready

I'd try a dab of white Lithium grease on the gears, oil on any bearing surfaces. Just saying.

I was thinking about getting 2 of these if I can try and then do a tender swap if they have tenders with different designs on them.

I had a similar issue with a Bachmann locomotive plug-in. The orange plug is not available. However, I was able to order a white universal plug from Bockman that has replaced that orange one and it worked great.

Hey there'. I have the same model, & had a really bad motor. I repowered it with a Kato motor & used the hex drive shafts from A-Line, to connect up to the Bachman trucks, & works really well. Thanks for the video. Michael NZ

The name(s) of those pieces that connects the drive shaft to the gearbox are couplings or driveline universal connectors.

I have the Great Race to Promontory edition of the Athearn Genesis Big Boy too and I love it! The first thing I changed when I got mine was the whistle. I didn't like the factory applied whistle so I changed it to the Hancock step-top 3 chime and I like the sound of that whistle much better. I also followed a video from Soundtraxx to make my model sound a little more like the real 4014 and now I love it even more. I always enjoy running my Big Boy any chance I get

Nice repair diagnostics, but that one is not a Blue Box locomotive. It has made it China stamped on the bottom. That is an Athearn ready to run, and only a few years old. The other indications are the drive shafts and screw in motor mounts. Blue Box locomotives had the white plastic push-in motor mounts and never had screw in motor mounts, and the hex head drive shafts were never used on the Blue Box locomotives. It would have the keyed slip fit drive shafts if it was a Blue Box.
