I'm a maker of things related to robotics, transport and manufacturing. Combat robotics is a particular hobby which I am keen to share through videos here, as well as knowledge people could find useful. Based in australia.
Brutal Suplex and Lighting Speed - Combat Robot Derive S Part 1
A revision of Derive, my featherweight battlebot that recently won the Open Nationals. Now rebuilt for the Sportsman division it trades the spinning discs for a grabber-lifter mechanism that throws opponents over and backward. Upgrade drivetrain and new control scheme should allow Derive S to out-manouver and flip any opponent.
Derive is a Featherweight Combat Robot in the 13.6kg weight class that competes at the Robowars events in australia. If you're interested in combat robots, check facebook groups, there is likely a club near you!

Building a Big, Dual Weaponed Combat Robot - Derive Part 1
มุมมอง 12K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Since I first got involved with combat robotics i've wanted to compete with featherweights. Despite the name they are the largest class fought in australia at 13.6kg. This series will follow me building a battlebot for this weight class with two distinct weapons to control and damage opponents. The machine is based on Derive, my smaller antweight prototype. The event is in january so I better g...
Building a Winning Combat Robot - Split
มุมมอง 23K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Split is my attempt at a more meta style machine known as a '4WD Vertical Spinner'. This type has theoretical advantages in damage output and control, but theres more to building a robot than the concept. The robot is built from a mix of steels, carbon fiber and plastics designed to maximise durability and deliver a destructive Eggbeater style weapon. Entered into the 150g Robot Wars/Battlebots...
Perfecting an Omnidirectional Combat Robot - Part 2
มุมมอง 21K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
After the partial success of Scale Mk 1, my beetleweight combat robot/battlebot, I aim to fix the faults and properly win some fights. This includes a new single piece chassis, custom drive gearboxes, and a truly devistating eggbeater weapon. Scale is a Beetleweight combat robot which means it competes in a 1.36kg weight class here in australia. This video includes it's performance at the Adela...
Designing and Fighting an Omnidirectional Combat Robot - Part 1
มุมมอง 12K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
For my first Beetleweight Combat Robot I tried a unusual side-strafing drivetrain known as 'Kiwi' or 'Killough Drive'. I then took it around the country to see what I could learn from it, now being relayed in HD Video!
2.5 Years of Ringspinner Combat Robot Development
มุมมอง 26K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video documents my progress in developing a competative Antweight Ringspinner combat robot, discovering new technologies and improving my engineering skills. Covering the progress from Mk 1, my first ever combat robot, to Mk 3, a unique and powerful walking machine. Ringspinners are a rare archetype due to their complexity but a clever application of Hubmotor technology can help alleviate ...

i love the tone shift with banana bender's music cutting in

+1 maker muse
03:09 and not forgetting the gyroscopic effect a vertical spinner has on your bot 07:35 as demonstrated here. Also a well designed horizontal spinner can effectively work either way and isn’t bothered by being flipped🤷
Hey James, gotta ask, what Weapon Motor do you use in Derive(150g)? I've been hooked to make a similar bot, but the weight is flying out the window. Any pointers?
I used a BetaFPV 4500kv 1404
Spilt was mean little bit man.
THE KEYGEN INTRO??????? hell yes fantastic choice
I really wanna see death roll give Skeletor a solid shot with its spinner and see what happens. Lol
Goddamit just saw the text error at 1:08
13:22 I hear you Homestuck fan! Haha
The commentary from the three hosts for this was absolutely terrible, they seemed like they had no real interest or knowledge in the subject matter prior and they were just madman production staff. Pretty dissapointing. I know people will disagree but I find this class rather boring, the risk of proper damage and destruction is what makes the fight more tactical and engaging.
The 10 sec countdown making you see nothing for the last 10 sec of the fight This must be the worst thing i've ever seen in a competition feed
If this is the last Competition for a while. Are you planning on doing any Videos on updates or Design changes. Also will they be anything on everyone Favourite bots your 150g Antweights?
The next video will either be an upgraded 150g hubmotor ringspinner, or about making a first 150g robot with modern parts (as most similar videos are a bit outdated imo)
the grabs and lifts on the saw midcutter while it was grinding at the lifter forks were insanely cool
I'm running a US antweight lifter grabber this weekend at an event and this video has me pumped up for my fights!!!
Best of luck
Another great video James, keep 'em coming!!
Masterful driving, congrats on the win.
Dang... I thought I actually respected you until I saw that you use a MacBook @1:13 . I knew you were too good to be true... all jokes aside, congrats on another win. You have designed and built an amazing bot.
15:05 That "double suplex" was an unexpected awesome move!! xD
what I learned: if your bot is ever under the weight limit, add weight.
Fantastic! Well done James!
That guy next to you after you got the trophy needs a bit of a shave 😂😂 In all seriousness was so much fun to be part of your featherweight domination of Australia this year. Hoping to challenge you for the title next year
Keen to see it
Cyber Truck's driver seemed like a bit of a poor sport. He wanted nothing to do with your win, and just wanted to gtfo lol
Eh he's actually a good mate, Derive would not have happened without him. Perhaps just a bit tired after the event. Don't blame you for thinking that though
nice homestuck music
Doing my duty
Congrats James! Derive being a true suplex monster as always!
a robot with jackhammer
The sides almost remind me of FIRST FRC bumpers.
Huge fan of your channel! Wondering how difficult it would be to convert Derive to a crusher from a lifter. I want a mini Quantum clone slowly crushing holes through your enemies.
I quite a bit like Derive's whole aesthetic. With all the whacky bots painted bright colors coming in with fun songs, I think a smaller, unpainted bot that comes in with keygen church is really intimidating. It's design is just doing one thing and one thing only, really well. You optimise your loadout and armor for each fight, strategize about how best to approach every bot, optimise after every event, and only then think about theatrics. You came to win, and you deserve that trophy.
Geez you make driving look super easy
Kevin Milczewski would be proud.
Haha the way that derive dragged around skeletor reminded me of a small dog Also, what's with the big green bot?
House robot. Can seperate stuck machines or move burning robots to the door.
@@BrokenLinkRobotics Ah okay, cheers
love the keygen church intro music
Dang! This was an incredible event! I'd love to see you in the states in events around there if you're around, but maybe you can see if you can fight death roll one day or join them??? That'd be a sight to behold with your talents.
Good to see Banana Bender is still out there, must have been 5 years since last time I've been at an event in person. Love the video as always!
Well deserved
The countdown graphics block too much of the video :( Small clock in corner is fine.
I don't disagree, they're baked into the fight footage that I got though. Can't remove them
@@BrokenLinkRobotics Sux for everyone :( If the opportunity arises, do pass the feedback on so we can enjoy more carnage next time :)
Bravo mate you drove flawlessly in the final, a well deserved win
Michael Myers Theme Song would have been an epic choice of entry music.
Brilliant!
Why was deathroll in that arena?
It was the house bot for the event. Has been for years.
@@razer259 sorry Ive never Senn that event before
That was epic! You were a beast in that box. Total control! Very entertaining fights! For your forks, I'd consider reshaping the barb into an elongated trapezoid. You can keep the benefit of increasing the wedge height in the front that the barb adds, you get a small "platform" on top that will be useful for repositioning, and when you are stuck, the more gradual shape of the trailing edge of the trapezoid means you'll have a much easier time getting unstuck than with the barb shape. Plus, it's a more ridged shape for the front of your forks than just a wedge spear.
Will consider it
I was hoping to see you grab the saw bot from behind and drive around using it as a weapon against the hammer bot. Though, I'm sure that would have been very difficult.
I was sorta trying, plans often go out the window the moment a fight starts though
@@BrokenLinkRobotics No plan survives first contact with the enemy and all that. Still, really enjoyable fights
That sting ray bot looked kind of cool, probably built by a very cool team.
Well deserved!
Due to all the copywritten music baked into the fight footage, the video isn't monetised and I have no control over the ads. Hopefully it isn't too obnoxious.
Awesome bot! What was that crazy cathedral entry music? I didn't see it in the music list. Definitely fit your bot though. Loved the banana bender RKO!
Tenebre Rosso Sangue by Keygen Church :) Their music is great
Good choice of entry music, did not expect some key gen church
Yeah that was brilliant lol
really good choice yeah
How do you design your asymmetrical flywheels and make sure they are balanced?
@SrBuhler most CAD softwares allow you to see the center off mass. I trial and error until it's balanced.
