The Best Laser Engraver Machine for BEGINNERS- UNDERPOWERED Yet Unbelievable
Thank you 🎉😊
I suggest starting with leather from wickett and craig. You can get some bellies from them that are great quality for very cheap, and you can also get some of their seconds from their bone pile. $97 a hide from the bone pile.
I've been loading up on the Hercules ceramic for a while. Love it. I wish they would make rolls like the warrior but you know better.
Good advice! I personally stay away from Hobby Lobby, mostly because of their bigotry, but also because of their poor quality "craft" items.
please send me a free one. Thank you
I have the same anvil. I put 2 layers of leather under it to get rid of the ping. Im no blackamith but for the average user its fine
Generally, I find that HF has crap steel, so I don't buy things that I need to cut with. Scraping and holding tend to be meh, and if my life depends on it, never.
I would seriously hope copper is softer that an anvil😮
Anvil’s on a bouncy table is 100% not the proper way to use an anvil or measure how well it performs. But if it works for you then it does…..
I'm looking to get into leather, I think I will just buy a cheap wood hand screw clamp for $8 at menards.
take that bit to a grinder and smooth out that ring on the punch. you got this dude!
@BadCompany410 Thanks for the tip and the vote of confidence!
@ man your on this! sometimes we just gotta make it work! God bless brother..
@BadCompany410 Apprexiate it, my friend!
I use the same anvil for setting solid copper rivets.
@becomingDangerous0 It does a great job with them. Thank you for sharing.
Could you compare this to a standard anvil?
@rickeysalguero8 It pretty much is a standard anvil with regards to leather working. I talk about a few of the differences between my anvil and this one in the original video. However, since I an not a blacksmith, I'm really not knowledgeable enough to highlight the differences for blacksmith uses.
Cerealsly
@kevindepriest6786 🤣🤣🤣
Don't buy that junk
@kloo7996 I disagree, some of it isn't that bad and when you are young and broke your options are limited. That's why I made the video is to show everyone which tools sucks and which ones were decent.
Thanks, But Hobby lobby is the most expensive leather you can buy....per square in.
@dannyl2598 You are correct, Hobby Lobby leather is very expensive per sq in - unless it's on sale. Then it's actually decent leather at a fairly decent price.
99.9 % of Harbor Freight products are cheaply made in China junk not even worth buying and bringing home ! I hope Trump puts a 1,000 % tariff on all their crap !!!
@sheltonheath9165 I disagree, some of their stuff is decent. When you are broke, your options starting out is limited.
Where's the best place to buy leather from. My dad was into buckskinners back in the 70's, he had all the tools and either made his own leather by brain tanning or bought it from Tandy leather. Tandy is apparently out of business. Of course he sold all his leather working tools, so I'm starting basically from scratch. Any info would be a help. Thanks.
Tandy is still very much alive, but many of the retail stores have closed down. There is not one in my area, so I order from their website. You can also buy from Weaver and Springfield Leather online. If you are looking for something local, Hobby Lobby carries some decent leather, but it's expensive. I usually wait until it goes on sale.
@ thanks for the info
Anytime!
I have been sewing leather for 56 years and never used a stitching pony. I have used an iron vise with copper covers on the jaws to hold a small project. Just saying, if you have even a small workshop, somewhere you’ll have a way to hold the piece without a stitching pony.
@beshkodiak Thank you for your insight. Small workshops bring challenges with storage space and if you can do without or use something, you will often come out ahead.
Slug it!!!!
@Master_Schwag 🤣🤣🤣
For rotary punches, the cork/rubber door stoppers for cabinets work wonders. You can buy a big pack for cheap and self adhesive
@Menuki Are you talking about placing them on the little brass plate?
@ yup
How long do they hold up?
@@bigstacksshop the rubber hold up far better that the cork but either way, but a pack of 100 is like $5
How about velcroing it to the table.
@doneagan2094 You probably could velcro it to the table, but I just clamped it down. Thank you for the idea.
This is what gets me, people think these are actually real leather.
@littlegirllost2654 It's some kind of squirrely technical loophole. It's like going to McDonsld's and expecting wagu beef. Thank you for sharing.
the hf hole punches were $10 which is cheap price to have a backup set that actually work, why would you return them.....
@abruptlyblunt In general, I couldn't agree with you more, as a backup set if you already have a set. But I already have three other punch sets from reviewing so many of them. I just think there are better punch sets out there for the money if someone is looking for their first. Thank you for sharing.
Where can I get a supply of leather from?
@oromis16 Tandy, Springfield, and Weaver all have great selections of leather - but you will have to buy them online unless there is a store in your area. You can also buy scraps from Michaels or other hobby stores, but they can be expensive unless on sale. I buy some leather online from the aforementioned sources, or I wait until it goes on sale at Hobby Lobby.
@bigstacksshop, I know of Hobby Lobby but I'm unfamiliar with the other names you mentioned.
Do a search online, you should be able to find them fairly easily. Tandy Leather is probably the most well known, it was the original parent company of Radio Shack.
I built mine in about as long as this video lasted with crap I had. Point taken though
England has a ruler that is a rule just to clarify things
@aoccurly9982 That's funny, because I think the "official" meter stick is right across the english channel in France
Brass doesn't dull steel.
@DarkSeraph351 While it is true that brass is softer than steel, brass can still dull steel over time. Wood can dull steel. Plastic can dull steel over time too. This is why you have to sharpen your kitchen knives even if you always use a cutting board. Some materials will still faster than other materials.
Your Black Kow compost looks so different than ours in Florida.
@teahunt what does your black kow look like?
Price?
About $300, I put an Amazon link in the video description.
@bigstacksshop hey a quick question does it engrave on metal?
It can on some metals, but not great. If you are interested in engraving metal, you should check out one of the laser engravers from @wecreat. I have the lowest powered one at 30w, and I engrave coated metal with no problems. They also have an infared laser. I haven't tried it, but they claim it does a great job cutting various types of metals.
I thought you said snacks!
@zeichmam9630 I might have. I sometimes say Big Snacks as a joke because my weight fluctuates this time of year with all the holiday foods.
Butchers brides become widowed wives, when the butcher cuts With dull knives
@SkinnyVinnyLive Maybe not that tragic in a leather shop, but the most dangerous knife is definitely a dull one.
How has this held up, have you continued to use it? Im currently thinking of getting this because Im in an apartment, and would enjoy building something like a fence to make aligning the punch easier and more efficient
@olekgierczak2494 It has held up fine so far, but I havent put it to extensive use. Funny you mention the fence, I just had a friend weld one up for me. Great minds think alike.
I kinda noticed that your cork backed non-slip ruler is upside down. Is there an advantage to that???
@harrymclaughlin955 One of my viewers mentioned you get a better line when you that it that way. But, unless you hold it down extremely firm, it will slip around on you. I like the old way better.
My phone is watching me again. I bought that wing divider yesterday. 😂 I haven't used it yet but it seems pretty hefty.
@michaelwatson7298 My phone keeps real close tabs on me as well. I hope you like the divider.
Most of Harbor Freight tools do not hold up very well cutting probably because of the quality of the steel. HOWEVER, there is one tool that I have used for years. It is the ⅓ hp, 1" x 30" belt sander. It cost about $40 when I bought it. It rattles like the bearings are going to fall out, but they haven't (I am not sure there are any). I have 4 belts for it;k 80 grit, 120 grit, and 600 grit, plus the one I use all the time, a leather belt for stroping. I keep the leather belt loaded with green jewelers rouge and every time I start to cut leather I strop for a few seconds on each side. To check the sharpness I cut a little piece of news paper. If it cuts the paper it will cut the leather. I know the sharpening gurus will say I am ruining the edge, and I may be, but I just want to cut the leather quickly and efficiently with one stroke if possible. The more strokes, the more chances I have to cut my fingers. I strop Exacto blades, box cutter blades, all sizes of breakaway blades, my pocket knife blade, even my round and skiving knives. They are a bit tricky. I highly recommend this machine.
@macaigill I heard the i" belt sander is great, as is the belt/disc sander combo. Do you use the belt sander for anything other than stropping? Also, did you buy or make the leather belt?
those sanding blocks are made for 1/4 sheets, tore the other way. 8.5" x 2.75"
@grounded-b937 The ceramic sandpaper was already cut to size. I'll have to see if they carry full sheets of it.
What was that piece called that you put on top of your leather stamp before pressing? I need one of those!
@tysonkoehn1 IT's called a Ram's Foot. I got it from Tandy, but it's been discontinued. They carry another one now, which is a lot taller. I don't remember the name of it the new tools, but if I remember, I'll come back on here and let you know.
@@bigstacksshop thanks for the reply! I did see that new version from tandy and I dont like it for the way you used it (and the way I want to use it also). I will investigate other options!
@tysonkoehn1 If you have a buddy with a metal bandsaw, they can always cut it to whatever length you want. Just make sure it's a stationary bandsaw and not a portable one, you want a perfect 90 degree cut. Also, you might find one on ebay.
I always strop my exacto blades right out the box. Their sharp but not slice leather sharp. I also get a lot more life out of them.
@joshuapoche5137 I might have to try this. May even make a video about sharpening and stropping your tools. I need to get my technique down first. About how may laps across the leather do you give your blades. I did maybe 15 or 20. In your experience, is that enough?
@bigstacksshop yea i do 5 on one side then flip and do 5. I repeat probably 3-4 time so that number sounds about right. I cut a few pieces then do it again. I keep my blades constantly stropped. Its helped so much
@joshuapoche51371 I'm going to have to try that.
I mounted a magnetic knife rack from IKEA to the side of my work bench. It’s great for needles but heavier tools like punches, shears & even dividers fall off the rack when I’m pounding.
@achadhaamoratsim7098 I never though of using it for needles, I had another viewer who mentioned using a magnet for needles as well. I'm going to have to try that.
The needles idea came from a Morcon (Macon?) Leather video. )Hope it’s okay to mention them.)
@achadhaamoratsim7098 That's awesome. And I'm fine with you sharing ideas from other people. This is how we all become better leathercrafters.
great video. i am going to buy that anvil now. it will come in handy for rivets for sure. and those wing dividers look beefy, so i might invest in those as well. thank you for sharing, i will be on my way to harbor freight now. lol
@dannymarkgraf34 That's awesome, my friend. Please let us know what you think of them.
Craft Knife - I can't stand. I use scalpels with blades from a taxidermy supplier. The basic handle on the scalpel is uncomfortable, but the blades are better. The magnetic bar I have in my shop, along with the tool box
I used double sided tape for the magnetic bar, and attached it to a shelf above my work bench.
@@brianhudson3619 I just bought a few neodymium magnets and place them where i need a magnetic surface to attach something. Mostly use them to hold needles so they are easy to access and my rulers so they don't get bent while laying around.
@brianhudson3619 That's not a bad idea. I've never had luck with double sided tape, but maybe it's the kind that I purchased.
@jameshoward8609 This is a great idea as well. Thank you for sharing.
@brianhudson3619 I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't head over heels for the hobby knife. It is more comfortable than the exact knife, though. How do you like that toolbox?
Have you tested the harbor freight 12 inch metal ruler? I did and it works but not my go to.
@stephenhenderson8296 Thank you for sharing. I did test it in the original video. It's a great little ruler for $2! I keep one in my leatherworking travel bag.
Thanks for your testing and honest opinion! Help us all save $ for other things!
@mhein681 Thank you very much. They are my opinions, but i always try find a reasonably priced alternative as a substitute if I don't like them.
love these videos
@jenkins1979 Thank you very much my friend. I enjoy making them. Even though some of them, like this one, take a couple of weeks to make.

Bought one with the clamps.
@robsarchery9679 That's awesome. How do you like it so far?
I never copy anyone. I do however take on board someone else's ideas and incorporate into my own projects.
@Arfursmallpigeon I almost always incorporate other people's ideas into my own projects. But no one, should ever feel bad about copying when they are learning a new skill. That is truly a great way to learn.
Just started leather work about five years ago, but I’ve been doing that for quite a while Mr. big
@barystewart1807 It sounds like things worked out for you, which is awesome my friend.
How do you sharpen half and quarter round punches for belt ends and other leather work.
@FrankC757 I have never had to sharpen belt end punches because I down own any. My best guess would be to run it along your sharpening stone of sandpaper and roll it along while you draw it across the sharpening surface. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
