    7:25 This card was pretty expensive back in the day. There is a review of the card in creative computing from Jan of 1984. This is taken from that review: "The Appli-Card presently lists at $375. It is also available, bundled with WordStar for $500 list--good value if WordStar is the word processing program you want. The RAM Extender is another $200 or so, depending on whether you get the 64K or 128K version. The 64K version is said to be upgradable to 128K by the addition of eight 150ns 4164 chips, at a cost of about $50. " For this 375-$500, you really still have to add an 80 column card. It can do a 70 column display without the card or a 255 character "scrolling" display (meaning the screen is a window to a much larger screen). If you want to do word processing well, you need the 80 column card. Though I think using it for a spreadsheet, it would be better to use the 255 column scrolling window. Plus it has a bunch of compatibility problems. To get it with single useful application for $500 is not affordable. Plus, this is 1984! The writing is on the wall for CP/M at this point.

    • @RudysRetroIntel
      @RudysRetroIntel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed, it was a very expensive card. However, it did have a faster Z80 processor speed. Still , it wasn't worth it. Once companies made better software like spreadsheets and word processors, it indeed marked the end of CPM.

    5:00 According to the manual, it's a 300 baud modem. The first 14.4 modem came out in 1991. This thing cannot do anywhere near 19200. It may have a serial controller that can reach 19.2, but that is completely different.

    • @RudysRetroIntel
      @RudysRetroIntel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, all modem can do 300 baud, as that was the minimum standards of the day. I don't know the full buad rate of this modem, but I will take your word on it. In this section, I was talking more in general terms on lots of modems. Thanks for commenting and watching!

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RudysRetroIntel The manual for it is online. I read it in the manual. A lot of modem manufacturers lied about their specs. You can find lots of 56k modems even talking about 115.2. There are basically 3 connections. Computer to modem, modem to modem and modem to computer on the other end. The modem to modem connection is really the only one that matters. Even the earliest PC/Apple uarts can do 19.2 or at least 9600. So if you have an external modem, you can connect to that modem at 19,200bits per second. Later uarts can do 100 something kilo-bits per second. I forget the exact numbers. Anyway, the modem manufacturers would usually list the top speed of the uart. So a 300 or 1200 baud modem could have a 19.2kbs top speed, so of course, 19.2 was in big bold letters on the box, rather than the 300 or 1200bps modem-modem speeds. Another very frequent lie with modems was lying about the modem-modem speeds by including compression. Though some of these compression methods were pretty good, all were worse than zip or lha or tar compression. Everyone zipped files before sending them across a modem. So the compression really didn't do anything. Once you were up to about 9600 baud, even entire screens could fill in a second or less without any compression.

It turns out they all work, but I collected the two not new ones at the same time (one for backup) then found the NIB one later. CoCo 2 never been used NIB, stays that way since the CoCo 3 does all the 2 will do... I say you can never have enough spares LOL... Well, depending on the longevity and rareness of the machine.

  • @andreroussel
    @andreroussel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you use them then it's not hoarding. On the other hand if they are just cluttering your space then it is hoarding (by definition). I would probably fall under the category of hoarder because I have acquired more vintage computers than I have had time to repair or even verify properly. I do like restoring these systems and want to spend time learning each one but I do find it difficult to resist a good deal when I see one. Currently my vintage computer count is at 99 including several pocket computers. This count does not include all the peripherals nor my calculator collection. Out of the 99, I have 76 verified working systems and the rest is a mix of faulty or unverified systems. I have yet to resell any of my systems but once I am satisfied they are in good order I will probably thin down quite a lot. For example, I probably don't need any Tandy Coco 1 and Coco 2 when I have working Coco 3s.

  • @mogwaay

    Great question. For me, and I'm very tight for space, I'm just 1 and only machines that I have a strong attachment to (or as v small 😅). I think if a machine dies you can worry about it then, but not too much before.

    I ended up with 4 VIC 20s, 3 of which were bought “not working” for the peripherals that were included with them in the auction. I intended to use the extra 3 broken ones for spares but all were really easy to fix (2 just needed deoxit in the power switch). I will sell/swap 2 of them, but I haven’t got round to it yet because I still have to renovate the tape drives that came with them.

  • @8bitsinthebasement
    @8bitsinthebasement 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Now that's a really great question. I have large enough collection myself at this stage (along with an Apple II, Thanks again Rudy) and I've wondered the same thing. The way I see it, it's the custom chips that you need more so than second units in very many cases. Take for example the C64, all of it's custom chips, The Vic 2, the SID and even the 6510 can be bought as new (through the use of FPGAs and the likes). So for a system like the C64 the question is, do I want all original parts or will modern replacements do me? If you're happy with modern stuff then one C64 is all that you need. All you need in stock for the Vic 20 is a working VIC chip (the only part that's not currently available) and the same applies to many old systems. Personally, I'd prefer a small stock of custom chips that are hard / expensive to find and repair the systems that I have if and when they go bad. At the minute I've got a sick TI99 4/a, an unwell Vic 20 and my MO5 has keyboard problems (so I'm trying my hand at PCB design). I'd say keep a small stock of what counts chip wise, save space and keep the collection smallish (I say with over 20 systems) that way you can give each and every one the love it needs. A great question well worth thinking about ;)

    I think having at least two of each is not really hoarding, ten might be extreme. It’s always great to have a backup. Nothing takes the wind out of your sails more than wanting to do something on your retro machine and it suddenly doesn’t power up. Now you have to troubleshoot it and possibly order parts before you can get back to your original task. It’s also very useful for troubleshooting more failure prone machines like Commodore 64. Until I obtained two C64s troubleshooting was very difficult and time consuming. Sometimes you even reach the wrong conclusion and end up ordering an expensive part when it is not needed. With two machines, you can often swap out chips between them and narrow down the issue very quickly. There are also different features between models that you might like having. You could keep a NTSC and PAL C64. Maybe you have a IIGS with different ROM versions. This way you can run certain programs that are not compatible with the other variant, or even write code and ensure it works across both. The final thing is that we are all interested in preserving the hardware. We all love these systems so keeping them in our possession and out of the trash is a good excuse to have extras!

    The only computers I kinda do this with is my Mac Plus, where I kept my childhood one and got an extra platinum one back in 2005 or so because it would seriously bum me out to not have access to a working one. I'd like to do the same with a color classic to help repair my first one from Japan. As for building a Weecee, I did 2 because it made more economic sense and I was able to keep a 2nd for future trade or gifting or backup for the 1st. Apart from that, time and space doesn't allow me to do this with the rest of my collection. One thing that'd make sense is your idea of 2 units, but do it with other people so that you're not forced to carry 2 units per person but rather spread it out with people local, or at least in the same country as you

      @SteveMaves 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, for me, and for other collectors I've talked too I think space is a really big issue.

    In CP/M the PIP name stands for Peripheral Interchange Program. This program was used for copying files in CP/M. I used the CP/M operating system on a Heathkit H89 computer during the early 1980s. It is interesting to see that this very old and bare essentials operating system originally written for the Intel 8080 cpu is still in use and has not completely disappeared.

      Yes, it's amazing that CP/M is still active today. I remember using it in the 80's with my Apple II clone and a CP/M card. The funny thing is that I still remembered the PIP commands. Thanks for commenting

    Hello Rudy, I have a kaypro II and no disks. But I have a gotek with flash floppy. I would like to use your file from GitHub for the CP/M and then copy them to a real floppy disk in drive B by using the gotek in the kaypro. Do you have also the right jumper settings for the gotek for me? Regards, Ben (From the Netherlands)

      Hello Ben, I used the GoTek as drive A, so I believe that the jumpers are already set for drive A. I don't have access to my Kaypro right now, but the GoTek site should have the jumper settings. Thanks for commenting.

      Thanks a lot for your reply. Tomorrow I’m going to have a look at the gotek website then and at your GitHub files. I couldn’t find the correct file type with CP/M for the gotek. On the internet at first I only found .td0 files. So I really hope that I can get CP/M running tomorrow using your files! Thanks again for your reply, this video helps a lot :). I will let you know if I get it running.

    Is there anyone out there, who has a 6522-Card for the Apple ][? I built one -homebrewed- in 1983 with a 6522 and a Hyundai HY6116P-15 CMOS static RAM on it, but I can't find my documentation about this card... I know by sure, that I don't constructed and designed it by my self, I've copied the card from somewhere... The other TTL-Chips on this card are: a Bus-Transceiver LS245, and a LS74 FlipFlop and some other NAND, NOR-stuff... Best Regards Georg

      @@RudysRetroIntel I know that we had programmed inputs and output-purposes for this card in assembler. Something like the control for a RTTY converter (Radio TeleTYpe). And I had used it to program my own printer driver for a serially controlled Seikosha printer, in the late 1980s. But I can't find the programs/drivers anymore, on my disks - so maybe I could use that to get a little more information about the programming of the card... But nothing to find...

    Nice video. Pleased my PET ROM/RAM, PET Diagnostics and SD2PET were useful. One note, although the 2001-8 cannot normally support BASIC 4 (as it does not have enough ROM sockets), you can use BASIC 4 with the PET ROM/RAM and it runs fine on the 2001 board.

      @@RudysRetroIntel I make the PET ROM/RAM and PET Diagnostics and I designed the SD2PET for TFW8b. Google "tynemouth software blog" and you should find me. BASIC 4 should run without a problem on any PET board. The 2001 can run either the version from the 9" 4000 series or the CRTC version if you want to fit a piezo and hear the power on bleeps.
