Fall Ride - Farmington Canal Heritage Trail
With a few hours to spare on a beautiful fall day. I found myself on one of my favorite Connecticut Rail Trails. I had heard they just finished the 1.3-mile extension in Southington from Lazy Lane to Aircraft Road and of course I wanted to check it out.

While editing this video, on August 18, 2024, this area received over 10 inches of rain. Many of the roads in Oxford and Southbury were flooded and people’s homes were damaged. My thoughts are with the people who lives have been impacted by the storm. This video was recorded on April 21, 2024. As mentioned above conditions may have changed particularly on the west end of the trail. This is a gr...

I have watched your videos before.... I used to work at MCC. You must live nearby. There is an additional 294 miles of rail trails and gavel roads down to Keene, NH. I have a Ride with GPS file for this ride. If you know the owners of MCC you can contact me through MCC.
Mark, I do remember you. Feel free to reach out via DMing me on Instagram.
Only got to ride this in the summer and missed my return in the fall like i wanted to, but def will ride this path again, it's so chill
If you live anywhere in the state, this could be a regular ride for sure.. Next time I plan to ride south or Cheshire. There is a new extension in New Haven I have to check out
Very nice John! Well-filmed, narrated, and produced. Hope you all are well and had a blessed holiday time.
Ken, We had a great time this holiday season. Got to see everyone except my daughter who is underway. Happy New year to you and your family.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA God Bless to your daughter with appreciation for her service.
@@kenwbrenner Thank you
The rain definitely made things hardy. Great trip! Epic shoe deterioration. I think I'm gonna try to tackle much of this route this winter - need all these peaks for my winter list save Moriah.
Seth - that sounds like a great trip. I hope you are not breaking trail. I was just up in the Whites again before Christmas. I stayed two nights at Lonesome Lake Hut. Looking forward to seeing your videos.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA yeah, that's the rub of it. I have visions of big winter trips but then the conditions put me in my place. I had planned to grab a bunch of the peaks along with Washington on this past trip but quickly changed my tune after getting reacquainted with winter hiking.
@@RhodySeth I had thoughts of bagging the Kinsmans from Lonesome Lake Hut. I got to Kinsman Pond and turned around. It was getting late and it was really cold.
I always enjoy your videos. Great camera work and identifying the cross streets and points of interest is great.
Stephen, I love to know where I am so I label things. Making videos is my creative outlet. I'm glad to hear you appreciate it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Looks like a great ride.
Yes, it is one of the best in Connecticut.
That's great that they have extended that trail. Very nice fall colors and I liked seeing all the murals along your bike ride.
Sara, I can always count on you to start the comments off. I appreciate it. This time I focused on the trail art. It has certainly made this trail more inviting. The new section is helping close one of the few remaining gaps. I plan to cover the whole thing and camp near the north end in Southwick, Massachusetts in the future.
The new section has a cool brownstone bridge over the Quinnipiac River!
You have to pay attention. It’s easy to miss.
Wow that was a very hardy breakfast they provided! Ok that was a heck of a lot of rain to have to hike in and so sad about the view. That Imp Shelter area was actually really great it actually had a bear box and everything you would need it was nice to see the old pics. You actually make a trip like this very very tempting we need to do it at least once someday if we did we would need to do it with you but we would want to try the easiest and nicest one for our first experience. It is a lot of fun watching you guys hike though! LOL! Also so fun watching you make it to the top of each area wow the shows and feet were destroyed on this trip! That was so much rain! Well done!!
@justramblinaround you are so funny. Yes I would definitely recommend an easier hut to get to for your first AMC hit experience. I just did a relaxing three days and two nights at the Lonesome Lake Hut. It’s still in the white Mountains but much easier to get to. I always look for some historical material to put things in perspective. It would be nice to show you around some of what New England has to offer. Thanks again and keep ramblin’
Thanks Sarah, fall has come and gone, wish I could keep up better. The trail has a lot of interesting art. It really makes a difference in the more urban areas. Merry Christmas!
I liked seeing some of the autumn colors in this one and the murals too.
I remember it. It's a great trail 👍
Yes, Thomas it's a terrific Trail. We have to meet up next time your in New England let me know in advance. Merry Christmas!
Very Helpfull. My main door was rubbing on the bottom. I added a couple 1/4 inch washers to shim it up. Now the door closes perfect. Thanks
Mike, always glad to help another RVer
The breathtaking landscape and thrilling activities suggest a truly unique experience. Have a great Holiday Season.
Thank you and Happy Holidays to you as well
Wow John this hike was amazing and really enjoyable to watch! To start I would go with the best tips to have a 22 pound backpack vs 35 pounds for sure! Wow much of this trail did look very steep I have a lot of issues with heights so I question how I would do but those views are amazing when you don't have fog. Our goal is to get back to our marathon and big hike shape watching these videos inspire us more! Those were perfect tips just take your time and take the breaks! SO your filming in the mountain area and the water was amazing it looked like it was in another country it was so green and so beautiful we always think the PNW is so green and beautiful but wow! You smiled so big when you said 5 more for you could see the relief and excitement almost as much as when you said your looking forward to dinner. That was one heck of a hike thank goodness you got the bottom bunk and yes I would have sat on the porch and rested for sure. This location is amazing the cabins are great and those were really nice bathrooms well worth the hike to get to that location! Food looked good too! Really enjoyed this adventure thanks for sharing! Well done!
You certainly pay attention to the details! LOL despite my lighter pack, may age made me slower than the younger folks on this adventure. The trails in New England tend to go straight up and down. Out west you get more switchbacks. That said this is one of the steeper sections of the Appalachian Trail. it’s no joke. My friend Sam is amazing she’s into CrossFit and lifts some serious weights. She’s also a fan of Disney. Did you noice her hat and Disney princess cup? I was very happy with the hut, so much so I’m heading out for a pre-xmas experience at Lonesome Lake Hut. It’s also in the White mountains of New Hampshire. I think I might just make it back to the PNW in 2025. We’ll see. I appreciate your videos and our back and forth comments. Enjoy the Holidays!
Hi John. In spite of the rain and difficult terrain, you did another great job in filming, narration and in this case - overcoming physical difficulties. Well done Friend!
Thanks Ken! This was a battle with the weather for sure. Not every day is going to be blue skies. I really enjoyed Imp Campsite/Shelter it had everything one needed.
This is so beautiful. My husband and I are going to have to do this.
I think you’re goin to like it.
Tried to ride this a couple of weeks ago but there are two large washouts about 7 miles from the east end one at Christian St and another at Pope Rd. Had to turn back early.
Such amazing scenery and adventure. It looks like a special experience. It is a pleasure to watch your adventures. 💕
Wow, John! What an example of true grit! Even in those conditions you produced another great film👍
It was hard to hike and at times hard to motivate recording video. I think in the end, I’m glad we did the trip and glad I kept recording. Thanks for the feedback. It helps with the motivation. Happy Holidays to you!
Well no this was a wet one. Honestly after reaching Mount Moriah. We could get back to town fast enough. There was lots of slipping and even Matt was going slow compared to the first two days. I hope to do it again someday as part of an AT through hike. Take care.
Darn, I was hoping the rain would stop at some point. You did get that one little peak at the mountain. Ouch about the blister and your friends hiking shoes are done after this trip. Still looked like a fun experience.
Thanks for showing how to get over to Harpers Ferry on the stairs. I knew it was there, but haven’t seen anyone show video of it before.
I had help, my buddy Steve often took videos to help out. It’s pretty busy there and I can understand why people don’t set up a tripod. Thanks for the comment.
Hi John. First, thanks for this very interesting and scenic hiking video! As usual, great filming, narration, and video production. Felt bad for you all with the views being blocked by weather. I'm impressed with your efforts to take this on. I've heard about this section and wished I could have given it a try before I turned 70. I'll let you represent me! 🙂 Looking forward to the followup videos. God Bless!
Ken, this was a great trip despite the less than ideal weather. Someday when I hike the AT there will be wet days so we have to learn to make the most of what the trail provides. Part 2 should be out on Tuesday. Thanks for watching and take care.
They should bring back $.75 nights at the hut! 😂 that’s interesting about the rock slide, creating those ponds there, I didn’t know that
@rhodyseth, sure does cost a lot more theses days. When you look at the footage you can see where the rocks fell from Carter Dome. It was cool to collect 6 4Ks in a single trip.
So glad you posted this video as I am planning the same trip in 2025. Happy to watch and learn.
@billgrant6270 this was a great trip, just be aware the elevation is no joke. Are you planning to stay at Carter Notch Hut?
@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA I am planning the same route, Pinkham to Carter Notch, to Imp, to Rt 2.
@billgrant6270 you’ll enjoy it!
That was a shame the fog blocked your views, but still looked like your first day was a great one. It looked really step and challenging but in a good way. That AMC hut looked really nice and you probably appreciated that even more given the rainy weather.
The Carter Notch Hit was terrific. I felt like I was back at summer camp. This was a challenging day for sure and the rain definitely made it more difficult. Thanks for watching!
Hey John we had realized we missed this one so glad we went back and watched we didn't pay attention of the new set up that is a really nice bike and great set up! I (Jodi) would have mispronounced that park many times I am positive! Loved that ride one you get through the tunnels the green all around you was just beautiful! That was a very interesting train stop and a great lunch location. Filming was nice loved all the bike shots that takes a lot of patience you have some great friends to bike with. You ended strong with all the cuts and edits of the 9 days were fantastic!! Well done!
Jodi, I know your struggles with pronunciations. It kills me. I often cut them out and replace it with narration. There is an U.S. Army Corp of Engineers campground near there that we stay at occasionally. I’ve been to that restaurant a couple of times. I’m very happy with that bike it has proven to be well worth the money. I think having good friends to ride with makes the trip even better than if I rode solo. I have been trying to tease the next video to keep folks engaged. I’ve also been doing TH-cam shorts to fill in the weeks between the full length videos. They are. pretty easy to edit and publish. Thanks again for the conversation take care.
Great bike trip and views along the way.
It really was a great trip and can’t wait to do another one.
That was an awesome ride 👍😎
It sure was, Thanks!
Hi John. Thank you for another great video on this very interesting trip. No one tops your comprehensive quality of an outdoor video. Appreciate the effort you put into the research and narration. Look forward to Day 4. Hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving!
@kennrenner thanks so much for your terrific support of the channel. This series has brought me past the 1000 Subscribers mark and you have been here supporting me for most of the way. I can’t thank you enough for all the terrific support. Day 4 is in the works and the shorts preview is loaded for Tuesday. I’m also working on the Wildcat-Carter-Moriah-Traverse backpacking video. Thanks so much for the Thanksgiving card! We spent time with our extended family at my parents house. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
The weather was so beautiful and tranquil that day, and everything seemed so serene. It was hard to juxtapose that day's journey with the horrific events that actually took place at these sites.
Yes even Harper’s Ferry had seen all lot of fighting. I wish there weren’t so many lanternflies. In hindsight s I wish had had stopped at the cemetery.
Hello friend! 💐I really appreciate your hard work. take care best of luck. have a wonderful weekend.I wish to you all the best. your performance is also beautiful. All the best wishes to you and your family.Wishing you and your family always good health and happiness. 👍 like 👍 16
@shanwarajapan thank you all the best for you as well.
Another great bike day. Dang though poor guys has to have shoes. That railroad bridge was a cool one. It was interesting hearing about that battle sounded horrific so much history on our lands that we don't know about. Bloody lane and the observation deck and that lower bridge we will have to remember to stop by when in the area one day. Made for a very interesting bike rode to be able to ride along national parks and canals is amazing! Thx for sharing well done !😊
The shoe saga has a twist, stay tuned for the shoe ferry. The C&O canal and the B&O railroad were built at the same time. The former B&O is now CSX Transportation. There is a ton of railroad history on this trail. It would be impossible to visit Antietam without appreciating the sacrifices that the soldiers made. It’s truly hollow ground. You would enjoy this area and that Harpers Ferry KOA. Appreciate your comments and have a Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃
That's great that you taking time to see all that this trail has to offer and learn the history of it. I'm sure I'm gonna be back there again. 👍
Thomas, there is so much history I need to go back too. This is a trail worth doing multiple times
Quite the journey indeed. All that history...awesome!!
Bruce did you teach history? I love it, but became an engineer.
@@OutdoorsWithJohnUSA Indeed, mostly Canadian history with a Global history thrown in there every few years.
I very much appreciate the time taken to record the sights with descriptions. Very interesting and informative and I'm riding with you guys vicariously. Cheers.
You’re welcome to ride with us anytime Stephen. Thanks for the comment.
The scenery along this bike trail really looks fantastic. The stonework, the old buildings, national park sites and then the beauty of the water.
I agree, it’s hard to find all that in one trail and for 185 miles. So much to see. Take care
So cool, great video. Love that trail. See you on the road.
Yes it’s a great trail. Thanks for stopping by!
At 3:40 I think you may have filmed the ghost of Fred Tuttle. Bless that man.
@seamusVT that was an abrupt stop for sure. We were lucky it only delayed us. It could have been a lot worse. Thanks for watching.
This looks like a fun adventure
Yes probably type 2 fun 🤩
Saw your had 999 subscribers. So I subscribed :) Good video btw.
Thanks for the help. I was hoping I might hit 1K this week.
Hey John what a hike it looked like a beautiful area the fall is such a great time to hike I love the sound of the leaves at my feet. Wow you had so much bad luck along this hike so sorry. I find it sad what has happened to many rivers and areas that should be fresh water sources. Man I don't know if I could hike at night but you really didn't have much of a choice it would have made me so nervous. Chicken dumpling's actually sounds good. Wow that was a very long day! Hey you smiled in this one at the end too! Sorry I missed this one so glad I went back and checked it out! It was exciting night hiking oh boy!
I really had a few challenges on this one, but it makes for a better story. I was definitely tired and wouldn’t have chosen to hike at night. It is a little uncomfortable at first, but I’ve gotten used to it. Thanks for your support!
Beautiful! Perfect music for the scenery! Made my day. Thanks, John👏👏
Yeah, I’m trying to work the shorts and see if I can get some traction with them. They take less time and fill the gaps between full length videos. Thanks for the feedback, it’s always appreciated.
Wow all by bicycle, pretty impressive trip.
It was for sure, thanks for checking it out!
Awesome, love it.
Thanks!
Day 3 looks like a good one
Thanks Sarah, they were all good days.
Great video! Smart idea to do a test run before your upcoming adventures. I'm originally from CT so this was especially fun to see. Just subscribed to follow along 🙂 - Danny and Leigh Anne
Awesome! Thank you! Danny and Leigh Anne. I just subscribed and started watching your Siwa video. Wow impressive. I’ll check be checking out more for sure.
This was canal-tastic.
Yes in a word you’re correct. Thanks for the support even though it’s not running or backpacking.
I live in Shepherdstown and hit that part of the C&O tow-path quite often (well, a bit north of that)
You are fortunate to live so close to the towpath
