After 23 years editing the journal LIBERTY, and as a fourth generation Adventist growing up close to church administration, I can speak to this situation. Of course an Adventist religious liberty outreach should aspire to speaking/witnessing before kings and prelates; as the Apostle Paul and others down to John Knox and Luther have done. But a different dynamic is at work here. I remember my father coming home from church headquarters laughing at the moxie of a Diop predecessor asking church permission to join the World Council of Churches: at a time when they and Rome were actively working for reconciliation and reintegration. He was refused and instead linked with the less offensive Christian World Communion, becoming its Secretary General. Diop has inherited that position at a time when ecumenism has morphed into a Christian coalition clustered around its dominant partner: Rome. Ganouine thus represents less Adventism than the churches the Communion leads in common purpose with Rome-high words and quotes from Ellen notwithstanding. Our GC leadership were informed of this but seem not willing to face facts. I will not forget an unnamed past religious liberty leader coming to my office to set me straight on things. "What Ellen White wrote in Great Controvery about Rome and Sunday laws was how it was meant to play out in her day," he said. "But there has been a delay; and in this new paradigm, we are to be united with Rome against secularism." Curiously, that has been the theme of recent Adventist religious liberty world congresses. Certainly, that is the stance of the Christian World Communion and the associated mixed multitude coalition. And significantly, that is the preocupation of the politically active, mostly evangelical faction in the US who are clamoring for power.
