We started this channel to showcase some of our projects and "Tech Tips". We are a small community college doing BIG things - mostly training new technicians to go out and work in the marine industry. Working on boats is the BEST! We're still figuring out this TH-cam thing, but feel free to comment and share with your friends.

Last season we tried out the StarLink System and it worked great but it was still the original "Portable" unit and we HATE anything that's not permanent on a boat. After realizing we wanted to have internet on the boat, we started looking for a solution to mount our Gen 2 dish. There were lot's of DIY solutions, but as an instructor the end of Spring quarter and departure deadlines happen simultaneously... meaning no time for DIY, we needed to get this done.
HUGE thanks to boat neighbor Rob and NavPod - this we EXACTLY what we needed. It only took a couple of hours and my dish was permanent and ready for a few thousand miles at sea cruising up the Inside Passage to Alaska. This was 100 times better than trying to store the dish below and bring out for email and weather checks. We left it powered up almost the entire trip!

I Love Alaska!
มุมมอง 21212 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This was an amazing day to be in S.E. Alsaka! Seek Alaska Tours was the perfect last day of our Waggoner Flotilla. This year we went beyond Ketchikan for the group and ended in Petersburg after traveling for 24 days. We were mostly slow boats, so the 800 miles up the inside passage takes a while, we average 6 hours per day underway. This was a highlight for our group and Seek Alaska had to do t...
Moving "Lady MT" outside, almost time to sea-trial! & end of the school year
มุมมอง 372หลายเดือนก่อน
We ran out of time this year and clearly took on too many projects. The Lady MT is very close to being finished, but we need to stop for summer break. All the final exams are done, the awards are given, and students graduated. Many of our students that have been working on re-powering this 25' Ranger Tug are coming back for their second year of coursework and will be eager to get this project f...
"Lady MT": Final Report on re-powering a 25' Ranger Tug, almost done - but postponed launch
มุมมอง 205หลายเดือนก่อน
Great progress the past two weeks. However, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and are making great progress on this project. Problem we are facing is no more time! Final exams next week and then everyone is gone for the summer holiday. We were so close to launching and sea-trials! It'll be ok, we'll finish up the last few details in August and do the sea-trials in September. Then th...

Tech Tip#10: Bilge Pump in a Bucket, updated! New US Sailing regulation
มุมมอง 6592 หลายเดือนก่อน
We've been talking about bilge pump in a bucket for years! At the Marine Technology Center we have put many of these together, and have stories where they have saved vessels from sinking! This system is portable, easy to deploy, and can be giving to another mariner in distress. What do you have in your boat for emergency de-watering? These are not that expensive or difficult to put together, co...
Lady M: Final, Final, Engine Installation on a 25' Ranger Tug
มุมมอง 2452 หลายเดือนก่อน
Great progress this week and we spent very little of our funds. Bank account is getting a little low after purchasing the $25,000 engine, and then the $5,000 in parts we spent a week ago!! However, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and are making great progress on this project. The new decals and lettering look great. It won't be too many more weeks before we can splash the Lady MT ...

2008 Caribe, pretty nice used boat. The students used this for authentic learning during one of the outboard motor courses. They did the steering cable, thermostat, oil, filters, impeller, lower unit service and more. This Spring has been very busy and it's time to move a couple of projects out of the shop. Spring cleaning! We don't need to keep this skiff for our SVC Skallywag Boat Club becaus...
Update from Marine Tech: Plenty of Projects
มุมมอง 2513 หลายเดือนก่อน
LOTS of great progress on the re-power of this 25' Ranger Tug, the "Lady M", however, there are a TON of other projects students are working on. Spring quarter has two very popular courses at the college: Advanced Engines, & Outboard Motors 2 (Big Engines). This year it feels like we are doing more than ever, but the crew is really knocking it out of the park. The Ranger Tug is going to be a VE...
Lady M: Additional $5000 spent on repower
มุมมอง 4793 หลายเดือนก่อน
LOTS of great progress on the re-power of this 25' Ranger Tug, the "Lady M" removing the new engine might appear like a step backwards but it was part of the plan. We got everything sorted out, measured, and inspected. As soon as the motor mounts, bilge pumps, and fuel systems are installed we'll drop the engine back in place for the final time. This is going to be a VERY nice boat and will be ...

We needed to purchase a new: muffler, shift/throttle control, throttle cable, and move a bunch of existing equipment.... It's a boat thing - we are use to it!!!! Awesome Mike! I'm jealous... Thanks for sharing! - Alejo
Thanks for watching! It's been another AMAZING summer so far!
And I hope you are enjoying summer as well!
'what's JB weld?' haha love this bloke!
Bob is Great - will do another visit end of summer!!
Solar just makes so much sense. I'm on a much smaller catamaran with just 3200W but I also haven't plugged in. My cruising speed is lower, 4-5 knots using 2000W of power, but I do have a mast and will hopefully have new sails soon so I can move faster when the wind is blowing. Last season without the sails was no issue though, because the boat just charges as you go, so my battery banks are just about always full! It's like carrying your own fuel refinery onboard, except you have no mess, no smells and no costs!
Love it! Met them again this summer - They went further into Glacier Bay. More clouds & rain, but still hadn't plugged in. A local Port Townsend company is looking a a production vessel similar to this, but a little smaller. I think it's awesome!! Our solar only runs the house loads, still rely on diesel for propulsion
Thanks for the great breakdown! I am just about to do this for a client and it sure was nice having this video to see what I am getting into. Also, excellent for potential boat purchases :-) Thanks team! Hope you're catching tons of halibut!
You are so welcome! It was so much fun - Art got the biggest Halibut!
Decent overview but a few comments. The voltage checker is commonly called a chicken stick. The bigger clamps are battery clamps not alligator clamps. A microfarad check is for capacitance. Ohms are for continuity. Fuel gauges must be paired to the sender and not all senders are full ground = full/pegged. Some sensors might be 5v on newer engines. The starter has a solenoid on it and that is a relay. All motors and most gadgets have the required voltage and draw in amps on them so this can be useful for checking condition. Just like older cars many previous owners upgraded/added things without electrical knowledge. If there are splices in the system or other obvious modifications check them out as a potential source of overdraw or other sadness.
Thanks, planning on a version 2.0, once we finish a few other projects
Do you think this can work underwater?
I’m sure it would! Works amazingly well
Did you try it underwater - I'm sure it would work?
Epoxy is your friend! 😅 She deserves the repairs! And will reward you for your efforts in ways you can't possibly imagine right now! 😊
Great point! and I know - I've built a handful of small boats and one 21', always a treat! Sam D is a great designer, I'm heading to Alaska this summer and we're going fishing together :)
I have never before left a negative comment to a you tube video. However I am very fortunate to have a basic understanding of galvanic isolation and boat electrics safety as I’m afraid that this was a very confusing video. I would suspect that a script would have reduced this. To fumble around with various cables and saying that “this should beep” and it didn’t or vice versa really didn’t have the desired effect of passing on critical information. And, like the court lawyer says, something cannot be unsaid. If I was a newbie to the subject, by eight minutes in I would have been hopeless confused. I personally consider Nigel Calder to be an invaluable source of brilliant information and am somewhat disappointed with this offering. This is intended as positive criticism - I have no desire to be a keyboard warrior and giving grief for the sake of it. I have enjoyed many other of your videos. Thanks. Mark K
Mark - yes, after this I worked on a reference guide. 1 page to make it clearer how to check a shore power connection for safety and isolation. Under resources at my website cruiserscollege.org. We got too much on our plates and hurried a bit.
A great corrugated hose for a portable pump can be bought at a pool supply store. I have a 1.5 inch pool vacuumed hose, very cooperative
Thanks for sharing
Great presentation video, very clear and very educational ! I wish i had a teacher like you when i was a student, keep up the good work !
Thank you! 😃
Is that a wig? 😂
:)
You make it look easy, but it is NOT! Can you go through the step by step process for uploading the firmware to your laptop? Thanks
Sorry for the delay - out on summer holiday. Wakespeed is making great changes and it will be way easier now using the App, this is 'old' technology now - things change so fast!
Hi Michael, great video!! Im interested in getting certified to work in this field. I currently have an A.A.S in Electronics Engineering but love the marine industry. Is there a school that you know of in NJ to assist me?
Two closest are - IYRS, International Yacht Restoration, and the Landings School. I've been to both. Private, so more expensive than our Community College, but good schools.
Is there any room in the flotilla this year, 2024 -in theJun departure date?
Unfortunately, no - we filled up shortly after the Seattle Boat Show.
Sure would help if you had covered how to block the fill and vent tubes in order to do the pressure test. After all, 99% of people searching for and watching this video are testing a "long ago" INSTALLED tank. Major fail in this video.
Great feedback - we hadn't thought about that when we were in the middle of that refit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I’m 22 just got my first project boat 🫡
Great - starting young is perfect - enjoy your project, Mike
Not a fan of World Sailing or US Sailing. But this is someone everyone racing off shore already has.
Yes, I can think of many boats that should have this as standard equipment.
I've had one of these for 20+ years, lent it to a skipper who had hid limner holes plugged on a new to him boat, turn out there was a t shirt in the bilge stopping the flow. I always bring one with me on deliveries, good back up.
WE agree! thanks for sharing
Gardener engines, were built to work and last for a very long time. Slow reving and Smooth.
As you can tell, we are BIG fans of these engines
Very helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Tell all your boating friends - super important test!
Genius! And so simple. Thanks for this!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a suggestion to access the front of the engine to change raw water impeller and belts. I owned a 2015 27 Ranger with Volvo D-3 200 HP. Access to the front of the engine was gained by removing a panel on the front of the step inside the cabin. This WAS NOT acceptable. One would have to crawl in arms first and shove head and shoulders under the step. Almost impossible. I learned from several owners on the Ranger Owners group; Tug Nuts a better way. I cut away most of the top of the fiberglass step leaving a 3/4 inch margin around 3 sides. This opened up complete access to front of engine after interior panel was removed. I then made a wooden "step" to screw down onto the fiberglass margin. I don't know why Ranger didn't do this from the start. You're all doing a great job on this project. What a fantastic program you have since 1968.
Many thanks! We've been thinking about that now that the engine is bolted down. Do you have a photo? I can also search TugNuts
I reallyi really love watching you guys doing this diagnostic vids.
It's one of the highlights among instructors! Students always come in with a scenario and say "What do you think is wrong?" Then us instructors arm-chair advise, and we have a very high success rate :)
Love the Golden Dipstick award!
Us too - a great annual award!
Hi I like your video
Thanks!
So show the fix ,please
Every circuit just needs OCP (Over Current Protection), a fuse or circuit breaker. More videos comiing
Great idea!
I think so too! & thanks to Art for doing the video, we have a great staff @ the Marine Technology Center
Awesome content: I had to use the bilge in a bucket 🪣 this spring… best tech tip so far, bilge pumps failed…
Glad it helped! and thanks for letting us know!
I love these discussions. You both have a wealth of knowledge and you’re willing to share it. Truly appreciated.
Our pleasure! We actually enjoying sharing and have lots more to come
Great video! I'm trying to find part 2.
I don't even remember which one had the final installation....but it's in the King's Pride series
Thanks!
Great video, You both deserve the best.
Thanks so much!
Love the bling bling paint job that really suits the great work the students did! And thanks for teaching them to take the time to make sure things are serviceable!
Thanks so much 😊
Good work, love the updates. Thanks to the hard working team
They are awesome, those Skallywags!
I had Santana 20 hull 178. For many years of fleet racing . It truly was the first sport boat , many fleets still race.
They are doing their first Wednesday night series and LOVING it!! There is another in the marina and we recruiting for a third to race, that would be awesome.
Hello there, I came across your video because I’m trying to figure out how did all my gauges stopped working all at once when I added a second battery on my boat. I have. 2001 regal fastrack . The boat turns on fine but no cluster . I checked all relays and fuses and is all good . There’s power going to the cluster plug . Any help I’ll appreciate it thanks
OK - if all gauges stopped it's more than likely 1 of two things - power or ground. If you checked fuses... then it's a ground - the only thing common to all. However, use a multi-meter and make sure you have 12 volts at the back of one of the gauges. Test from the positive post to the negative at the battery (key)
Nice!
Thanks! It was a good donation!!!
love the parking garage analogy - simple enough that i can understand it!
Glad you liked it! I took many years of teaching electrical to come up with that, but it helps many understand!
Great boat, thanks for thinking of us alumni, Chris
Yes, thanks for thinking of us!!!
You guys are the best!
Thanks! We'll keep at it...
In the beginning, you should mention what you say at the middle. This system you're thinking of in your head as you describe all this is a traditional battery (fancy carbon foam) not a Lithium system with a BMS system. Are you trying say... if you apply system nominal voltage (12/24/48) depending on your system) to Feature In that you have configured the Wakespeed to limit itself to 1/2 power (a voltage regulated charge) and then you disconnect Feature In, you let the Wakespeed go at Max Power?
Thanks for feedback, we'll probably do an updated video with more features this fall. I'm still working with Dragonfly and this product
Nice job Kyle!
Thanks! Kyle is having a blast and using all the skills we taught him!
My 40 year old boat just got a life extension through the diesel maintenance class I took at Cruisers College. Thanks Mike and Matt!
You mean 40 years young! Your skills will keep it going, enjoy!
Love seeing tours of the older boats. Solid, nautical, no TV's!
Dashew designs are amazing!
Having just taken your 2 day diesel class, I can say your content is first rate and the effort you put into your classes is energetic and heartfelt. Thank you.
Great to hear!
You guys are meaningful!
Thanks
Thanks professor Matt! Lots of great projects happening, ❤it
More to come!
Did Gardner have their own air start or was that an aftermarket item Jim❤
Jim, I'm not sure - all of the ones I've played with (about 5) have been electric
Excellent! Love the Dangar Marine t-shirt!! 😁
Me too!
Nice work.
Thanks! We're having fun, students are learning lots!
Great progress!
We feel good about the current progress, for sure!
