Thinking Out Loud: Why Final Fantasy VIII Deserves a Remake

In the recent years we have seen a resurgence in the amount of video game remakes, and the Final Fantasy series in particular has been in the process of remaking many of their beloved games, with the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, and the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake that is said to be in the works. Final Fantasy VIII: The Misunderstood and Innovative Successor

Final Fantasy VIII is a tricky game for me to talk about, as it is one that I feel I've grown a certain fondness for, whilst absolutely despising some of the components that it entails. It is a game that is full of heart and soul, and is often misunderstood for what it is given the long-standing reputation of the entries that came prior, and the show stealing success of Final Fantasy VII. Stellar Blade is an amalgamation of many different influences, and it evidently wears them on its sleeve. It is the first Triple A outing for developer Shift Up, and for the most part is successful, delivering a strong sense of souls-like combat, that is neatly blended with a more hack-n-slash style of melee combat akin to something like Final Fantasy 16. Where the combat and exploration can fe...

It is difficult to close out a ten year saga, the pressure to deliver something that neatly concludes every thread and story beat established is challenging for the most well constructed of stories. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: A Masterful Remake and The Best Since FFX (Review)
The draw mechanic would have been 100x better if you just got a few of each spell the creature carries automatically after killing them. Make draw be useful for stockpiling or extra grinding, and the occasional hidden skill or GF draw. Still, you never actually needed to grind draw, and if you were too scared to sacrifice a few spells to enjoy the game, then you were the problem lol. I completely ignored all that my first couple of playthroughs and had lots of fun.
Personally, despite FF7 Rebirth and Silent Hill 2 Remake releasing this year, I feel like Metaphor deserves the GOTY. The game feels way more personal and immersive as an RPG than any other the games I've played so far. Truly one of the few games I'd recommend people to experience once.
I haven't played Silent Hill 2's Remake but man Rebirth was also an incredible game. I absolutely would agree with Metaphor feeling like a personal RPG, and I'm glad to see that it has got as many nominations as it did at the game awards. I would love to see Metaphor win in, but I won't be disappointed if Rebirth takes it too. Happy to hear you enjoyed Metaphor as much as you did 🙂
I feel like for a 10/10 the game should succeed in all areas where it could be, and the dungeons / bounties environments were very repetitive. Consider FF rebirth which has uniquely crafted massively explorable areas, with fully voiced dialogues to boot, which metaphor also lacked. Metaphor is a fantastic game, but objectively a 10/10 I believe it is not. Once voicework is completed for all segments of the game (majority of all confidant dialogue is textbox), the dungeons are uniquely crafted, this game can be a 10/10.
I get where you are coming from and I hold both Rebirth and Metaphor in extremely high regard. But I think that how these games handle exploration is fundamentally different. Both a globetrotting adventures through their respective worlds, but FF7 takes the more traditional approach and has a good mixture of challenges, map marker objectives, and mini-games. Metaphors is more focused around its time management and having each dungeon, bounty tied to some sort of dungeon or quest. I do feel there may be some sense of visual repetition with some of these dungeons. But overall I feel there are different puzzles, and location variety with some of them being in caves, a forest or a tower, and the enemies are varied and interesting. I think the voiced dialogue is something that Rebirth has done a great job with, I think Metaphor in that respect too has a substantial amount and I get the critique, but I guess it doesn’t detract from the experience imo to dock any points. I generally don’t like number scores, but in my eyes if I had to assign a number it would be a 9 at least. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
First 👐
What is the track called that plays at the start of the conclusion segment I've been looking for it ever since I heard it in game but can't find it anywhere. And great review by the way I hope this video encourages people who have been sitting on the fence to finally play it and experience this masterpiece!
The song is called King of Destruction and the part played in the video kicks in around the 2 minute mark :). Also thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Metaphor has been nominated for GOTY!
Here's hoping that it wins the GOTY 🙏 it absolutely deserves it.
Metaphor is a máster piece.
ngl, sometimes I wished squareenix copied p5's turn based combat for ff7r
Metaphor for the GOTY❤!
I'm hopeful, it is absolutely deserving of it.
Best review I've watched about Metaphor Refantazio. And I've watched over 10 of them. Very VERY well done and thorough. 10 out of 10 game. 10 out of 10 review.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Wow! This is probably the only video that can capsulate exactly the theme of Metaphor from what ive seen on youtube so far. And also some neat mention to Katsura Hashino, Soejima and Shoji Meguro as well. I even consider to make a review of this game myself to share with my friends but after this video, it seems like I don’t have to anymore. Great job on making this video.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment 🙂. Have a good one
Hey just wanna say, Great video! Dont stop your uploads!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and I have some more content on the way soon (hopefully haha) 🙂
FFVIII is among my personal favorites it’s like you mixed Final Fantasy with Space Odessey 2001
Really enjoyed this video! P3R was my first experience with any P3 titles. That first playthrough is one I won’t forget anytime soon. A game worthy of the finite time we have. Thanks! 🌸
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and really happy to hear that Reload resonated with you. Persona 3 truly is a special game 🙂
why draw though when you can triple triad your way to victory
Agreed completely so far but im only half way through your video. Identity crisis is prominent the whole time Linear boss rushy start, into an open worldish thats bland, back into the super linear alien area that sucks since you cant melee. The boss sucks there too. Now i get to the part is EXACTLY the same as the uncharted 2 opening with the train LMAO. It wants to be dark souls uncharted warframe assassins creed elden ring detriot become human with the QTES sekiro etc
FF8 op. I'd wrap an elastic ban around my controller holding the X button down and change the settings to memory for battles and draw nonstop. I'd leave the room and make a sandwich then come back. XD
The junction system keeps me from playing it i haven't made it pass that part and everytime i install it i instantly want to uninstall it
Speaking as a FF7-stan, FF8 had the best music in the entire series.
I'm glad I was just a kid and played through this game a few times before I was aware that other people didn't like it that much. I could just enjoy it for what it is. As I've got older, I do prefer FF7 in terms of story but at the time I just loved this game and never really saw the supposed downsides/bad aspects. I see somebody else has commented that the system feels natural if you just play through the game at a normal rate/pace (i.e. not trying to draw full stacks etc) and this worked well until the 4th disc. That's exactly how it was for me. I just played trying to progress at a normal rate - as 10 year old me knew no better - and it was fine until the final bit of the game where admittedly I think I lost to the last boss maybe 20 times in a row before I scored a lucky break, won and finished the game. I'll never forget the feeling.
Correction: You can't directly control the party in FES and Shifting unlike P5's Baton Pass, doesn't increase your next character's strength, it literally only allows you to change character.
Thanks for the correction, I should have double-checked. Thanks for watching :)
Your move, creep.
Dead or alive you’re coming with me.

You are able to create your own unique story in Baldur's Gate III. This was an incomparable experience.
No game has ever made me feel more like it's intention is to waste my time than FFVIII.
Blind playthrough in 2024 and I think it's pretty good. I found a good combination and found out Double and Triple is broken very fast in conjunction with Expend 2-1/3-1 so I'm already liking parts of the system. I really like how everyone can have an Elemental Weapon and a Status making you able to turn them into a very customizable character. Make your basic Attacks Ice-Darkness infused, Thunder-Pertify, Fire-Poison, etc. so many combinations I never really see. The only real downside feels like the lack of unique encounters in order for the player to always have reliable draw points from monsters since over world draw points are not explained at all and the town draw points are only a little helpful. I did also quickly discover how important turning Items into Spells would be very early so I saved myself a lot of grinding and boss frustrations by utilizing it. Beserk + Zell is very strong for a Blind Playthrough.
Another issue FF8 faced was because of the massive success of FF7, with japan pushing ff7 to be a world wide release, it finally pushed the final fantasy series into western markets, many places that had never even played a final fantasy game before. With after many people who had not played the other final fantasy games before 7 didn't realise was how each new FF game was meant to be its own unique story, many thought FF8 was going to be a continuation of the FF7 story, and when they picked up FF8 and saw it was an entirely new story, character and system, it turned many people off from it. This was years before ease of information and the internet made it a thing.
No, it's not misunderstood. It is literally dog shit. It was loved at the time because it had the words "Final Fantasy" in the title, but every aspect of this game is so bafflingly bad you have to question how the hell it got released in-between 7 (which was okay, not bad but not the best) and 9 (top 3 in the entire series).
FF8 has always been my favorite Final Fantasy. In fact I'd say I am more an 8 fan than a FF fan in general. I love the world, the characters, and the wonderful lore.
I feel like 90% that love this game, had it as their first installment from the series, like myself. This is my definitely top 10 favorite goat. Favorite of the series and loved the junction system after not being able to beat Adel on 2 seperate playthroughs and restarting. But i was 9 in 1999(pre-mainstream-internet)when this game came out to reading and understanding conplex systems like the junction system wasnt my forté back then, but on my 3rd start i took my time to understand the jucntion system and them busted the fame wide open, such a great feeling having done that as a child back then on my own. But i also remember thinking that all previous 7 games were in the same universe and how much story i still needed to play/learn. I love this game still to this day
I have all the consoles and as good as Nintendo switch games are, this is right up there with the best. I’m hoping the other console brands take note that this is what a game should be. Music is phenomenal, and plenty of gotcha moments when you spy those hidden areas and missing astrobots. Graphically superb, I’m only a couple of worlds in and loving it.
You have all the consoles? Even the CD-i? Magnavox Odyssey? Even the freaking R-Zone?
Yeah absolutely, I think Sony have a winner here with the formula of collecting missing Astro Bots and even the variation of different worlds and mechanics to utilize too. It is definitely up there. :)
it was innovative...not in a good way. but it was NOT a misunderstood experience. this isn't a complex thing.
You spoke my mind. I was always interested in ff8's story, but I absolutely hated the draw system and the level up system. I know I could just playthrough the game ignoring all of that, but also I shouldn't have to. I would love to play the game if they remade the battle system.
I liked this review. This is a great game, but i feel like reviewers in general are too scared to give it any valid criticism. The story especially- i dont feel like there is really much depth and the player can figure out the twist relatively easy. I would have loved if the choice at the end wasnt so obvious. The game spends most of its time portraying (spoiler) as the bad one, so when youre presented the choice, its already as if the game told you what to pick Even the origin of Naytibas. It spends so long telling you what they are, but the answer was essentially spelled out already. Just my 2 cents.
In this game you can hit your allies with a healing whip. 8 of 8
As a single player who has played Destiny since 2014, TFS is agonizingly anti-singles. The exotic mission that requires two, the legendary Cooperative Focus missions that replaced the weekly story missions needing a group, the Elite Battlegrounds this season not having matchmaking. They literally have the blueprint on how activities can be run with open matchmaking why did they make 2024's expansion so anti non-group?
I played through FF8 when it first went out. Spoiler-free. Went internet-dark for a week. I had a fantastic time and thought I had just played the best game ever made. The ending being the best ending I've ever experienced to this day just further cinched the deal. Then I went online and was shocked so many people didn't like it. I was like, "Did we even play the same game?" Still enjoy it to this day. And I think a lot of folks overanalyze the battle system and get bogged down by popular opinions. For example, the memory loss is foreshadowed if you pay attention, and the game is not designed for you to sit there drawing 100 spells from every enemy. etc. etc.
I love when people appreciate FF8 but please, for the love of god, I wish people would realize that the Draw system is not the be all end all for obtaining magic. And I don't blame people for thinking you need to sit there drawing magic all day to strengthen yourself. The game does a terrible job showing off its systems. If anyone reading this ever replays FF8, please make use of the Card command. Like in every monster battle. With Card Mod and Magic refinery. It solves the issue of obtaining magic by drawing, and it also allows you to fight monsters as you would in any other JRPGs. If you Card the enemy for the final blow, you still get to have normal fights AND you won't gain experience for it. AND you can mod and refine the card for easy, plentiful magic. For comparison, Card works exactly like catching Pokemon: the weaker the enemy is, the more likely it will succeed. And there's some fun to be had learning what monsters become what items and what items become what magics. I did a casual playthrough a while back and you don't even have to try that hard to avoid leveling or to stock up on magic this way. And using your junctioned magic doesn't impact your stats as much as people fear it does. When you have 100 of a magic, you can use like 10 or so and not feel much difference for it. Also, make use of transferring magic between characters. Stock up more than 100 of a magic and keep the extra on your reserve characters so when you use it in battle, you can just quickly transfer some over and top back up after battle. This game is not as frustrating as people think it is.
I love FF 8.
18:31 Funny, but i found that even FF chaos found a better variety in combos than 16. And even Arise allow you to play different that of combos-styles, AND allow you tou change of character with just one button in middle of the battle. So if you have enough adrenaline, you could insane things in arise changing to all the characters.

You gave me something nice to listen to at work, thanks bud!
The problem Is the complexity, and having to be in the stupid menus too much, although I beat it, along with the Ultima, and Omega weapons, it was just okay, and I personally could care less if summons have their own HP, another problem is that the game has like half the enemies of FFVII, so constantly fighting the same bugs, and caterpillars, gets pretty old. Both games to me lack having enough cool boss characters, unlike Legend of Dragoon has, FFVIII really needed that, FF IX also, fighting Beatrix like four times was super annoying. I was thinking wheres the other cool boss characters in FFVIII? So to me FFVIII is just a weak rehash story wise of FFVII, and it was long drawn out over 4 discs which makes it even worse, I mean they went into space wearing space suits?! Talk about a dumb concept, and not only having to draw things suck, but having to boost only certain stats with certain summons is so restrictive also. Its a pretty looking game, especially the remaster, but it's not that fun. and the story is convoluted, boring eith alot of uneeded filler.
To me best final fantasy game ever made but it was sabotage straight up unfinished masterpiece
