@1gglywggly580 we'll be here. Just remember we have buy now- pay later options too
How does that crossmember fare with an NP241 or NP243 that doesn't have a slip yoke in an OBS? That output looks like it's really long.
@greasedog5699 you're right, our SYE is longer by design. The longer output allows use of up to 1410 u joints without hitting the shift motor. But it's only an inch and a half longer, so the 243 and 241 trucks do just fine with this crossmember.
IS this the same on a 2004 GM 3/4 ton ?

Thank you for the great information. I drive an 05 Tahoe Z71 and I am following, learning, and planning on this swap someday. It’s my daily so I will have to plan carefully and have everything in place for a long weekending of wrenching. I don’t do much off-roading but like the idea of a solid front axle sitting on coils. I’ve never driven one so it will be a first. The cool rare factor for me is what it is mostly about. Thanks again for the information videos to go along with your products.
@aarongoodman208 you're welcome I'm glad to hear it's helpful. It's not just cool, it improves the ride as well Check it out: th-cam.com/video/b9BPtL1Y454/w-d-xo.html
I have a 99 Tahoe my grandfather bought new. I drove it since 09 and last year a girl failed to yield on solid green turning left and drove into me. Broke her little car in half. My front quarter is bad and core support and some suspension but it never lost coolant and air still blows cold. I couldn’t let the truck go even though insurance totaled it. If I make sure the frame is still good I bet this kit would be a good alternative. I’ve been wanting to build an overlanding rig and this might be the ticket. I also have an 85 Chevy g20 van I wonder if your kit would work or could be made to work on that. I have an 94 gmc Jimmy I’d like to sas also. Thank you for this kit!
@@maxjones9139 I hope you can build your grandfather's truck. That would be awesome

This is gold, helped me a lot with the first steps, thank you!
While I understand and appreciate your point of view on this, my own experiences have me wanting a dana 60 in the front of any of my builds. I get it, if you haven't broken a 44 then there is no reason to spend the money on the 60. I had a K5 blazer when I was younger that had a 10 bolt front that is supposed to be comparable to the 44. I took that truck off road almost every weekend and was pretty hard on it. It only had a 350/4 speed and 35's. I would occasionally break axles in the front. Fast forward a few years and I was running a 496 stroker in the same K5 and with 40" tsl's. With that combo it had gotten to the point that if I wanted to climb a front tire up on a rock I had to be very careful because any excessive throttle and it would snap an axle. It had gotten to the point where I carried spare axles and the tools to replace them in the truck with me. Fast forward a few more years and I had a 1 ton chevy pickup, had transplanted the same 496 from the K5 into it and was running 42" tires. I was just as hard on that truck and never broke anything in the dana 60 front. I understand that upgraded axles would have been stronger and may or may not have broken on me but that was my stock for stock experience. I don't know what all the differences are between the old gm 60 and the sd 60 but given my experiences in the past, my new 1990 suburban build is getting a gm 60.
@wesleyclough to date, you've not run chromoly shafts in a D44? Shifting gears... You mentioned not knowing the differences in the 05+ Ford SD vs your "old GM Dana 60" The highlights are, High pinion (reverse cut ring and pinion), larger axle tube diameter, and 35 spline shafts (and carrier) with larger joints. Already set up for coil spring/ Radius arm If i was going to take the performance and cost hits of a Dana 60. I wouldn't settle for an old style (any brand) 60 with the same 30 spline shafts, and axle tubes as a Dana 44 But that's not an equal comparison because the GM is a passenger drop. And the ford is a driver drop Using an axle that doesn't match the transfer case of the vehicle Is a lot more work so now you're doing transfer case swaps, re routing exhaust etc. So on a passenger drop vehicle. You don't have nearly as many options
@tahoverlanding the old gm 60 does only have 30 spline outer stub shafts but the inner shafts to the carrier are 35 spline. The guys around here that run mud bogs run those 60's and that's the only thing I've heard of them breaking was the outer 30 spline shafts so they upgrade to aftermarket 35 spline outers and hub locks and they seem to be pretty bullet proof after that. To each their own but with the negative experience I had with the 10 bolt I run the 60's. Not saying that's the only option...if you can make a 44 as strong as a 60 somehow then that would clearly be an advantage. Also, I'm not a fan of ball joints. I like the king pins.
Dom!
what about the high pinion kingpin ford axle? 70s or chevy?
@JoshSpivey-m3o those are worse than the SD axle, all the downsides of the SD without the saving grace of the strength an SD axle has. Just Go SD at that point.
@@tahoverlanding i gotcha thanks for the advice
Will this work in conjunction with a free spin hub kit?
@RickAiazzi the axle shaft uses the same joints as either dana 44 or 60 (order the sleeve kit for which axle you have to ensure the shaft has the right joint size) so it works great with the spin free kits and factory hub assemblies equally

Hello, me again :) For the record, I have nothing against Dana 44s. As you mentioned they work great with Chromos, I know a number of people with them. I'm not here to argue anything except steering angle (and I'm a year late lol). I don't own a SD60, I only have a kingpin 60 in my truck. I'm not sure which year you measured either, but from what I've read and experienced with my own axle, they're capable of nearly 40 degrees with 1480 axle shafts. I adjusted the stops on mine until I saw your ears just start to touch trunnion (and then back off a smidge) and mine measured to 38°. The cool thing is the 05+ axles can take a 1550 shaft, which originally came in the 10 lug trucks. You can see these f550 trucks on the road when they steer to full lock have crazy sharp steering angles. I believe the number is 45°, but I've not measured one to confirm. Of course, you would also need to adjust the stops on an 8 lug axle once putting the 1550 shafts in to get to this number.
I’m 16 I have a Chevy suburban k1500 and I’m just now seeing this video but I like the idea of the solid axle swap because I plan on dropping a Cummins in it when the original engine blows but for now I’m just driving it as is
It’s a 2006 model btw
@blakesteele5349 our kit is often the choice for Cummins swapping. It fits nicely using dodge axles with the Cummins powerplant
@@tahoverlanding I will definitely consider it! I have to save a little more money first 😅
2011 Chevy Tahoe SAS kit how much do they run?
@johndoe-ut9eb we have a couple options for kits. And each kit has the option for coilover or coil+shock. And your 2011 will also need our steering box installation kit to add a steering box in place of the rack and pinion. You can see the parts at Tahoverlanding.com or you can also contact us directly to discuss it from there
Don’t forget the Jana 54 kit, there you get closer to dana 60 strength in the ring and pinion in a dana 44 housing.
🔥Love it, thank you.

Did the 2wd swap transmissions to the 4L60e or did they just throw up the transfer case
@InToTheBackroads both 2wd and 4wd use 4l60e. The 4wd just uses a different output shaft. I'm not sure if he swapped just the output shaft, or swapped in a trans that already had the 4wd output shaft
With a 2nd gen ram dana 44 swapped into in a 2nd gen Tahoe or Yukon with the stock wheels how much wider would the front track width be over stock?
@@Tbolt1000TForLife th-cam.com/users/shortsWFg_DSNdVaQ?si=NUSzfGoW_VEG0tMF
What is the height from center of wheel to lip of wheel arch on a second gen 4x4 Tahoe or Yukon with the stock front end ride height?
@Tbolt1000TForLife as is described in the first 2 minutes. "Stock" that number varied widely from year to year, and with different trim packages. That's also not factoring that nearly none of the 20+ year old vehicles made it through the last 2-1/2 decades with the torsion bars not being adjusted. That's the reason going off the rear rather than front is a more accurate measurement.
I made it to step 3
@@jaytank31 you're making headway for sure
I ain't hating on ya, I appreciate cool tricks.
I swapped out my NP246 for an NP241. My drive shaft doesn't spin anymore. When I solid axle swap I want a clutch type LSD, so locking(Frewheeling) hubs will be necessary to keep my drive shaft from spinning at highway speeds.
@asandberg6 with the #tahoverlandingaxleswap it's not necessary to spend the time, effort, and dollars on swapping transfer cases. But since you already have, let us know at the time you order your kit, and we'll take the front slip yoke eliminator out of the kit, and drop the price of the kit.
Did you add a plate to the frame before coil towers?
You haven’t tried test fitting the k2xx wheel hubs by chance?
@budworx1639 yes. But it depends on what you're asking This explains it: th-cam.com/video/rEiCccZ-I6g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=taLHp2XrKPIQqsD1 The Dana 44 we use for 6 lug swaps can't do 8 lug with gm hubs. This is because the 8 lug hubs are held on by 4 bolts, and the 44 uses 3 bolts That video shows the GM 8 lug hubs interchanging with the Dana 60 dodge hubs. Dodge did have a weird 8 lug dana 44 option that came in some 1994-1999 Ram 3500 with gas v8. But they used a weaker hub design. And didn't have ABS sensors If you've got a 2500/3500 most guys use our 8 lug kits with a dodge 8 lug axle
Ok, I buy it, but how can I keep my 8 lug set up on my express van 3500?
@alb2571 your best bet is a 1994-2001 ram 8 lug dana 60. But dodge did also have 8 lug dana 44 in their V8 (not v10 or diesel) 2500 trucks
Do you have something that can be used to convert a 2001 expréss van 3500 ?
@@alb2571 we have something in the works
@@tahoverlanding thanks, I'll be pending of it
The extra height is also not arbitrary, the 2500HD has a full 8 inch frame unlike the 6 inch frame on the half ton. Also allows for the significantly larger cooling stack for the Duramax.
@kylescaggs all factory ride heights are arbitrary. The word "arbitrary" and "intentionally designed" are interchangeable here I took both frames with no engines and fenders and measured them side by side. The 2500 does in fact have a taller frame but, the extra height goes upward. Not downward
@tahoverlanding correct, meaning the body is 2 inches higher than a half ton so to have the same fender measurements means it will have 2 inches less up travel clearance to the frame.
@kylescaggs Just for kicks, I just went out and again measured the vertical distance from the bottom of the frame at axle center up to the fender lip on the 2500 and the 1500 The bottom edge of the frame rail at axle center on both trucks is within 1/4" of being the same distance to the fender lip. Worn body mounts will make a 1/4 difference Again showing that the available space under the frame for an axle to tuck is the same
Not exactly the "same" the exhaust and oil pan can be different unless the hd truck is a 6.0
