    Thinking back, those old AMF Sportsters were good motorcycles. They were quiet enough in the valve train, though I do remember some gear sounds. My '03 Sportster is loud in the rocker boxes comparatively. As far as I can tell, Harley never made a bad Sportster, though some years have some advantages over others. I think the Sportster motor might be the best motor Harley ever made.

    • @butlercustoms
      @butlercustoms 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@lynntankersley4837 the Red Kote is not thick enough to clog up the line. It will only coat it. Once you drain the Red Kote out you can remove the tape over the tubes. Once the Red Kote had dried you can blow on the tubes to make sure there is no obstructions. Once it’s cured you can run a coathanger through it as well. Do not blow compressed air through the tubes until the Red Kote has fully cured or it could cause the Red Kote to bubble up off the tank and defeat its purpose.

    OK, I'm at 21:48 in, and I'm hearing about a hot wire going to the taillight on some product's drawing and there is no fuse in the line, and I'm hearing about if the wire got chaffed, it would burn up the whole wire system there. So now, I'm wondering if I did my new ignition switch right or not. What I did was connect the red to red, red / black line to red / black line, and the red /gray line to red / gray line wire using butt connectors just as the instructions said, but I also put the wire that feeds my single fire ignition coil into a larger yellow connecter where the red / gray line wire goes the the red/ gray line wire. This is how I power up the ignition now, and doing it this way, which is also the way I did it with the old ignition switch, when I installed the new Ultima ignition which did fix all my old misfire problems, and this apparently bypassed the old way the original coil was powered up, from a wire coming from the wiring harness, and doing it the new way, eliminated the old problem I had of blowing ignition fuses when riding down the road, but it also eliminated by handlebar kill switch. However, because I tapped into the red/gray wire from the ignition switch, where it connected to the old wiring harness red/ gray wire, am I now without fuse protection for my ignition coil hot wire, and if so, if something chafes and I get a short, will I burn up my whole new ignition, or coil, or what?

      @@butlercustoms OK, I know what to do. I need to look at the wiring diagram in my service book. I assume if I see a route to a fuse where I tapped into for the power wire to power up the coil, I should be OK. I suppose I shouldn't assume that a red / gray line wire to the ignition switch would be on a fused circuit, or maybe I should, I don't know. However, I do need to learn to read schematics. This is all new to me, but it's time for me to get an education in some of this. Thanks for the help. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, I'm now looking at my wiring diagram and it shows a red/ gray wire from the ignition switch, and it goes to the fuse box where it is marked "ACCY". I tapped in near the ignition switch and went to the coil with a wire. Since it is near the switch, I believe that wire which now goes to power up the coil, is tapped in, between the ignition switch and the accessory fuse. So, I assume by this, that if that wire should chafe and short, I would blow an accessory fuse, and not burn out either a coil or an ignition. So, I believe I am OK. If I am wrong in my thinking here, please let me know.

    Because I had an ignition fuse blowing from time to time when the bike was not running, I thought I likely had a bad ignition switch, considering that the ignition fuse (this time) was not blowing when running, the only thing I did that I can imagine was turning the ignition switch to on and off, and this apparently was blowing the ignition fuse from time to time. So, I replaced the switch yesterday and so far, all is well. I suppose time will tell. Because I had not ridden the bike in a while, upon start up, I thought something was wrong because it vibrated so bad, and it sounded a bit like an old wash tub, going tater-tot, tater-tot, tater-tot all the time, but then I recalled that is normal. 38 years on BMW's doesn't go away all at once, apparently. Just curious, do you prefer manual or automatic chain tensioner in the primary?

    • @butlercustoms

      Personally I’ve never had an issue with automatic tensioners on stock parts. If the bike has performance parts then I would recommend manual. Great question. Thanks.

    Have you ever known anyone to be able to drill through the shift shaft lever and shift shaft; and press in a roll pin to stop the shift lever from spinning on the shaft? Not sure if it could be done with the inner primary in place; but if I have to go so far as to replicate all this work you're doing, I think I'd take that precaution just to make sure I never have to worry about those splines wearing down again.

    • @butlercustoms
      @butlercustoms 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ve never seen anyone drill for a pin before. Not sure what tool one would use. It’s a very tight spot. It sure is a big job but once that shaft is rounded it’s toast. Thanks for watching.
