Finding a way to up cycle an old building is pretty awesome, regardless of what kind of building it is…. If you don't know, the area around that building is surrounded by dismay. The owners could pump a billion with a B into this building... but what about everything around it??? Good luck.

Turkey is extremely strong economically and geopolitically now. Property in Istanbul is crazy expensive. $400k is the value where you get citizenship. It's one of those type deals. The problem is the Turkish passport is not so strong, and people who can afford this development are already well established in Turkey. It's so weird that they build these things without golf courses though. Foreigners aren't interested in Turkish baths or such density without really good amenities. The concept is working elsewhere, although planning is not really a strongpoint of Turkey. They just kind of build things, and as the last tragic quakes showed, not always to the best of standards.

First time (consciously) experiencing a brutalist building was the church in Nazareth. Shocking and depressing at the same time. I have been to churches, mosques, synagogues, temples from many varieties of religion, from many centuries, in many countries. ALL signaling light, beauty and glory to share with you, if you join. The church in Nazareth just signals "You are much smaller than you thought. Get out of here, before I crush you!" Somebody abused the political weakness of the times in the area to plant it in total disregard of people living there.

Just found your channel and really enjoy your take on the built and almost-built environment, including nuclear plants that appear to be brutalism at its best. Maybe a little off your track, but Columbus is a small Indiana town that was named America's 6th Most Architecturally Important City by the AIA in 2012. J. Irwin Miller, chairman of Cummins Engine Co., established a program that brought in international superstars to fill this town of 50,000 with amazing stuff. Thanks again for your always-interesting essays.

Very interesting and illuminating video - thank you! This is why America's cities lack so much grace, and why their centers seldom exhibit even the relatively short history we have a nation. Our cities simply recycle themselves, driven on by commercialism and development pressure. It's good that a preservation movement got started in the 1950's and 1960's - but the defeats continue to this day. Money talks, and the architectural world seem smitten with fashion. Sometimes I wonder if there is even a national will to preserve architectural monuments, or if this will always be how approach our great buildings - as objects to be used and then discarded rather than preserved and studied as part of our culture.

The 60s seem to have been a time for demolition worldwide. Here in Melbourne, Australia, we lost many grand buildings that were replaced by eyesores. Now, many of the eyesores have been replaced by glass and steel monoliths. Such a lack of vision .
