Its not specifically coconut oil its just any type of carrier oils. You need oil/oils to soften the lip balm enough so that it glides over your skin. If its just shea butter and beeswax, the balm will be too hard. A typical lipbalm recipe has 1 part butter, 1 part oil and 1 part wax. However, you can just use butter and beeswax. In that case the ratio of wax compared to shea has to be quite low. For e.g 30% beeswax and 70% shea butter.

You have to use some sort of oil - coconut, sunflower, avocado, olive, walnut, almond, etc. Simply shea + wax is too grainy and hard. Oil moisturizes lips well. Note that the wax keeps oil from melting in high temps. Ratio has to be right.

@@DimplesbabsDJ The measurements can be in grams, ounces, cups, etc, and this does not matter. It is the ratio. 1 part of each. Use any measuring device.
