Bass Talharpa Soundcheck - distressed cherry finish

Long bit of slow improvising to soundcheck this bass. Sorry for some of the poor playing; I am getting sick and wanted to record before it got worse. Recorded with a DPA 4061, no EQ and just a touch of reverb. This one has some serious bass (making my mic clip)! This instrument is available to purchase at havocharpa.com

People said they worked great for stringed instruments mounted to the tailpiece pointing at the bridge/soundboard. I was really surprised, I didn't do anything but add a touch of reverb to this and was running it through a cheap wireless setup. hopefully it works as well in a small room to eliminate stupid reflections. #talharpa #tagelharpa #music #microphone #dpamicrophones

Hopefully it stops being stuck in my head now. Bad sound but good vibe, I have to treat this room to get rid of reflections; it's really bad because this bass is so much louder than my other one. #talharpa #basstalharpa #tagelharpa #music #doom

Have a good start to the new year m8.
I am very curious as to how your tagelharpas sound so clean. I'm new to talharpas, but play fiddle, do you use a sound post in yours to get that clarity or is the secret in the wood you have access to? Feel free to message me, I would love to nerd out about this kind of stuff. If it is your personal secret thay's totally understandable, I am just genuinely curious because your instruments are some of the cleanest sounding I've heard
Thank you. They all have sound posts and bass bars. A good bit of the sound difference is that they use steel strings and are also built around using them. I love the sound of horsehair but am also not a traditionalist 🤷♂️ I borrow things from modern stringed instrument construction like graduated backs and tops. I'm still experimenting a lot to see what I can get away with. Next will be seeing how thin I can make the sides vs the typical 4mm and what kind of effect it has on the sound.
Some of it will also likely be construction method; I have access to and use CNC machines for a lot of the grunt work and am able to make perfectly dimensioned/flat/parallel surfaces because of that (within about .002" in wood where it's necessary); it also lets me make small repeatable changes to the designs to see what if any effect they have so there is less guess work when experimenting
@HavocHarpa that's awesome, I was thinking that was a big key to your instruments sounding so clean. oh man, keep messing with the build and you will be making violins soon lol. Thank you so much for the info and giving some insight into your process. I'm curious if you've experimented with using a rounded back like a hollowed out log and what that sounds like.

Hi again, thanks for answering. What is the purpose of the small wooden bridge where the strings are going through, under the bass tuners? Some of Your instruments do have this, and some not...
All of my instruments except my first one have it. It's a "nut" that the strings rest on. It's not necessary to the instrument or traditional by any means but allows me to know precisely where the scale length starts, makes sure the first half tone is comfortably playable, makes the string heights consistent and let's me engrave the sides of the "neck" with accurate note locations to help new players and those who need a visual reference.
Hello, you have a nice talharpas. I wanna try to do one, and i am interested about size of this talharpa and what material you use! Amazing sound! You are big master! Thanks!
This one is ash body with a spruce top. I think 15-16" scale length. I was using a carbon fiber bridge and tailpiece because I had the material sitting around. I used cheap bass guitar tuners and d'addario prelude (long) viola strings for the low C and G, I think I used a 1/4 scale cello A string for the high string in this video.
@@HavocHarpa Thank you!

@@seanquinlan6887 thank you
Wow! What a sound!! Are prelude strings actual 1/4 c and g cello strings? And the dominant one? A d string? Does that mean you play in cgc? Or dgc? Also do you have a cello 1/4 scale? O your instrument I mean.
@@bullkrap5926 they make prelude strings in all sizes from 1/8 scale to 4/4 scale. On this instrument I'm using a prelude c and g string and a dominant cello D string. This instrument is tuned C3 C2 G2 from top to bottom, the bass string is in the middle
@@HavocHarpa Thanks! So your instrument also has a cello 1/4 scale? Or did you just like the tension of the 1/4 ones? And why is your bass in the middle? Isn't that impractical?
@bullkrap5926 the use of 1/4 scale instead of full size just allows the instrument to be smaller and easier to play (the notes are closer together). Bass string in the middle sounds better to me, the bass string gets more emphasis in the overall sound balance when all 3 are being played and allows for just the two C strings to be played as well. Other drone instruments are sometimes setup this way too like the moraharpa. With cello strings the G string tends to want to dominate if It's in the middle which isn't the sound I'm looking for.
@@HavocHarpa Thanks!
