Conversations with Megan, featuring Lucien Postlewaite
Lucien's story is for the young student and dancer who is feeling like their journey is not taking them where they hoped to go. Our dreams are not always our destiny and his story is the perfect example of learning to let the universe guide you to where you are truly meant to be! Lucien is a principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet, but I met him 20 years ago at my first SAB summer course, and we quickly became best friends. Our ballet careers took us in different directions and we reflect for the first time on the separation of our friendship to different sides of the country. I am so proud of his journey, where his talent has taken him, and so happy to reconnect with someone who I think of so fondly. So much to learn from this thoughtful and talented man.

Join our Post-Interview Zoom Huddle next Saturday at 4PM to ask Edward a question of your own! For tickets go to Eventbrite link: edward_megan.eventbrite.com Such a bucket list thing for me to interview this legend of New York City Ballet, Edward Villella. Conversations with Megan, featuring Roman Mejia
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Roman is a young corps member with New York City Ballet, but already a star with a glowing future. He comes from a fascinating family that is immersed in the history of New York City Ballet. His grandmother Romana was a student at SAB and then went on to be Joseph Pilate's protege. His father Paul Mejia trained at SAB as well, and after joining NYCB and performing soloist roles, left with his f...

Conversations with Megan, featuring Merrill Ashley
มุมมอง 25K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Balanchine ballerina, virtuoso technician, and principal coach Merrill Ashley was kind enough to sit down with me for an in-depth conversation about her early years, time with Balanchine, and time as a ballet mistress. Merrill made a huge imprint on my own career coaching me in Ballo della Regina at 17 for the SAB workshop, and getting me ready for an emergency full-length performance of Coppel...
Conversations with Megan, featuring Jock Soto, in honor of Maria Tallchief for #GoogleDoodle
มุมมอง 21K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I’m honored to help #GoogleDoodles celebrate Maria Tallchief and Native American Heritage Month! I have had the privilege of dancing many of the same Balanchine ballets that she danced with New York City Ballet including the First Movement of Symphony in C as well as Sugar Plum in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and Allegro Brillante (both of which she originated roles in). She was really Am...
Conversations with Megan, featuring Jovani Furlan
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Jovani joined NYCB as a soloist from Miami City Ballet in the fall of 2019. His talent and kindness were obvious immediately, and we are so lucky to have him as part of our team. We talk about how weird it is to be without work right now, especially for Jovani who has returned to his hometown in Brazil for the majority of the pandemic. We follow his journey as a young boy in Brazil at a Bolshoi...

I am so excited to introduce LaJeromeny, one of our newest corps members at New York City Ballet. He no doubt has a bright future ahead of him, and you will agree after you listen to this amazing interview. We talk about how he started ballet at 12, learned to embrace his roots, how he overcame anxiety upon entering the company, and his amazing entrepreneurial ideas for the future. This is an i...
Conversations with Megan, featuring Wendy Whelan in honor of Albert Evans
มุมมอง 14K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Albert was a principal with New York City Ballet from 1995 to 2010 when he retired. Everyone who knew him was incredibly fond of him, he brought out the best in everyone around him. He unfortunately passed away in 2015, and it was an incredible loss to our community, which spoke to his amazing personality and caring nature. I had the honor of getting to dance with him a couple of times, but Wen...
Conversations with Megan, featuring Anthony Huxley
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Anthony and I have slowly become consistent partners over the last couple of years, and it was so fun to chat with him mid-pandemic about his career and life. He opened up about his previous anxiety to speak in the past, trying to navigate a career as a shorter partner, and how he enjoys passing along his information to the next generation. He is one of the finest technicians I know, yet one of...
Conversations with Megan, featuring David Alvarez

His life is one serendipitous moment after another, and we follow his journey from "Billy Elliot" and winning a Tony at 13, to the army, back to Broadway in "On the Town," searching for life's meaning in Mexico and now starring in Steven Spielberg's new imagining of "West Side Story," ...
Conversations with Megan, featuring India Bradley
มุมมอง 17K4 ปีที่แล้ว
India is in her second year as a corps de ballet member of the New York City Ballet. It was not long after she joined the company that I soon realized what a witty and fun young woman she was. We both love to break the silence in the room and she is one of those people who I can always count on during a hard day to help make me laugh! We discuss what the first couple years are like when you ent...
Conversations with Megan, featuring Indiana Woodward
มุมมอง 18K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Indiana is a beautiful soloist with New York City Ballet. We catch up during quarantine while she is at home with family in California to hear how she is managing this situation, and reflect on what were some difficult and funny moments of her career. She is a gem, and I am always happy to be sharing time with her inside the theater and out.
Conversations with Megan, featuring Phil Chan about Diversity in Ballet
มุมมอง 6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Phil just wrote a book called "Final bow for Yellow Face," which is a great guide to understanding more about the diversity issues in ballet. It's a topic that I find is hard to navigate and find a comfortable space to learn more about, and after I read his book we had this conversation about these topics and what ballet can do in America to be more appropriate for our diverse audiences.

those shoe stories are wholly unacceptable…someone/whoever did that should absolutely have been found and booted out of the company. Wholly unacceptable.
What a treat - such a legend!
I actually think you’re right about the height. It’s more weight on the joints, and more muscle more tension etc etc. Totally see that.
I played baseball with Edward vallea when he and I played for the Breslin AC. The early 50,s. Queens New York
I was a dancer in Hamburg, Germany, but coming from Atlanta, I had heard of him when he was first starting out and learning ballet. He studied with my younger sister, and all I ever heard about him was how fun, warm, and endearing he was. His talent was evident from the beginning. I was so happy to hear he became a beautiful, successful dancer. Then equally shocked to hear of his passing. His story is an inspiring one. Let's keep his memory with us always.......
Really pretty
Amanda was my favorite character she was so great she was sweet and she was understanding she was just the best of them the best of the five I think
You have no idea how much I want you to do more of these.
Adult ballet student here. They tell me I have those feet lol. The first time I took class they stopped class and commented on my feet. I was like what's with my feet lol.
like, likelike, like, like like, like like, like. So, like, interesting.
What a great interview. Such a treat. I feel Ana Sophia is very underrated. She deserves more exposure. It's great to know she is happily married and living a fulfilling life. Bravo!!!!!
Thank you for this video, it was super helpful !!
Barnett was born in 1925 and Robbins was born in 1918.
What’s the difference between a releve’ and a susu? Please excuse the spelling. I love your class. Perfect for someone who once danced but hasn’t in a long time and doesn’t need complete instruction on how to do each move only reminders on how to do them correctly. You are a fabulous instructor and dancer. Thank you. Jo
Hello. Love your class! But can’t hear what you say when you talk and you the music is playing. 🤪🥰
It's so nice to hear from people who actually worked with these great choreographers and can share both the good and the bad of the experience.
Those connectivity anomalies, are when 3 letter orgs are snipping in.
I'm soooo thankful, I love you Amanda, Jody! You are really inspiring me, now I'm a choreographer and work with talented girls in the rhythmic gymnastics!
Ahh my Hashimotos started at 23, it’s tough!!!
Megan is a terrific interviewer, because when she has a subject who has much to say and says it well - she steps back and gives her space to elaborate. And Dena Abergel is so continuously interesting!
I see you can be at the top of your career, making it into NYC Ballet - and still you have to struggle to be noticed and be chosen for roles. She is great with the children. She teaches them acting, I have seen.
Do you support Tyler peck even though she’s against gay marriage.
Mo nb NBC
Gosh where are you now ? Dang.
Joachin,i saw your Bach and I find it breathtaking!!! Perhaps you don'nt have the age to go on with it but please teach the new dancers to dance with your passion!!! 🕺🏻🥰🥰🥰
Such a good teacher. Such a beautiful dancer. Love the piano music. It's hard to believe Megan has three children, college degrees, a professional ballet dancer and interview channel. Some people are just so naturally ambitious. She's so intelligent. I just saw her Bella del Regio. So gorgeous.
When I first saw film of Roman I was so excited. I couldn't believe how good he was. He was fantastic in every way. Spectacular jumps. Strong life force. I kept thinking wow this is Paul Mejia's son and he and his wife must feel so incredibly proud. I thought wow he must have had great training early. Paul in interview is so likeable and so pure and Roman is so humble too. I love so much that Roman watches so many performances in the wings or when he finishes his performances. That is such an honorment of other dancers. That total absorption and respect for his art. Roman is such a beautiful name. I love Megan's interviews because I get so much insight when she describes her thoughts and what she goes through. She is a wonderful dancer too (obviously). And I love her appreciation of the history of New York City ballet. How all the early dancers were and their part in creating Balanchine's company. John Clifford has so much to offer in exactly knowing what Balanchine wanted. And it makes a great difference in the way the ballet is performed. Clifford has an incredible memory and just knows so much. I wish N.Y.C.B. would use him in a big way and utilize his great wealth of knowledge. He his alive and well, why not take advantage of this true Balanchine disciple? I wish N.Y.C.B. would use Suzanne Farrell in a big way too. Excellent interview, as usual.
These interviews helped sustain me during the darkest days of 2020 and 2021 and they continue to add beauty and joy to my life.❤
nice 🩰🎶😉🥠
This is the most entertaining interview. Love their sarcastic rapport with one another. So cute! Great interview Megan:)
One of THE BEST interviews. So much history captured and presented with such charm. Their rapport and transparent joy in their shared dance journey is palpable.
It would be great and amazing if you guys could exchange where Megan goes to American Ballet Theatre as a guest and Skylar goes to New York City Ballet as a guest
Kathryn's story is a tragic one. Peter Martins was very kind to her. She started off so promisingly - then everything she had was taken from her. Her attitude is truly courageous.
I don't know if these young dancers realize Merrill Ashley, who was coaching them in Aurora, was a major principal with the company and Balanchine created two ballets for her. I have a book she wrote which contains pictures of her doing positions in the correct technique. It's also a very interesting book and one I value.
Love the map of Australia framed behind her!
With Nutcracker just passing, it would be crazy amazing to see Skylar guest as Dew Drop. Or guest doing any Balanchine pieces. The way she can just pick things up is amazing.
What about the putty?
Ashley Bouder is one of the best ballerinas i've seen. Her energy is contagious. I feel her soul evey time she dances.
Can you bring these back? I watched them when they came out and am watching again bc they’re so interesting !
What an enjoyable video. Thank you Megan & Indiana.
Here 2 years after the fact, but oh my goodness it's my two favorite dancers!!!
Great interview! At the time of Albert's passing, his family survivors included his Mother, 4 sisters, and 6 brothers.
Is the painful slaughter of an innocent animal funny Joaquin and Meghan? The bull is starved for weeks and enclosed. When the bull is finally let out into the arena the bull thinks that he has finally been set free and that his hunger and isolation is over only to get a very crude awakening. The bull finds himself trapped yet again. The bull has to endure a slow, tortuous, death from stabbing. One bull is cornered by men on mules and a matador. The machismo bullfighter is mascarading as a brave victor but it is a very pathetic thing. If a matador is so brave and courageous, why doesn't he go into the ring by himself unarmed and battle the bull? What a sad commentary that so much of the macho patriarchy of the world renders a perception that it is a big giant act of courageness for a matador to savage a bull and come out as the "victor" when the bull collapses in agony and is bleeding to death in his own blood as the matador arrogantly pumps up his chest for his brave "victory". A "victory" achieved by stabbing a bull dozens and dozens of times to declare the matador's "superiority" over a weak, savaged, dying animal. Bull fighting is archaic. It should be done with and chuckling about it so casually I find offensive. All matadors need to end bullfighting and use their artistry and skill to learn a new trade: ballet or other forms of the dance. Matadors should become dancers. That would take courage.
There is something very attractive about Gonzalo.
I saw you Roman in ny dance allegro with tiler in allegro 🎉🎉 You were fabulous …. Definitely a HIGHLIGHT Alf the evening👏🏻🎀🌻
2023 update: Roman is now a principal with City Ballet at 23 years old!
