  • Who can believe Center Stage was 20 years ago!!?? Amanda and I go in depth about her experience becoming a movie actress as a young ballet student, her time as a dancer, and how she feels acting can inform your moments on stage as a dancer. I first met Amanda on my Ballet Hawaii Nutcracker gig many years ago, and I have always had a girl crush on her!!! She is a gorgeous, kind and talented woman!!! Hope you enjoy our fun quarantine conversation!!!

I interned from College on Center Stage in the late summer/early fall, 1999. Met Amanda once on the set. She was very nice. Considering it was her movie debut and she had the lead role I think she handled the pressure well. She's cultivated a nice career over two decades. Good for her.

I enjoyed this interviw so much! The hour flew by. I grew up with Center Stage and was always impressed with the gentle vulnerability but also fiery strength Amanda brought to that role. I just finished watching 12 Monkeys, which is an incredible show, and I was impressed all over again by the development she brilliantly conveys for her character throughout the four seasons. She has a lot of depth and diversity in her skill set as an artist. Thank you for choosing her for this interview, and for being such a warm and entertaining interviewer!

Really great interview. I love that the interview was an hour long.
With longer interviews you can flow into who the person really is and what their journey has been without overly rushing or just getting skimmed-over details.
I loved Amanda. I never knew who she was before.
I loved one person in the business talking to another. Ballet dancer to former ballet dancer.
I loved when Meghan interjects her things because then you learn about her and ballet life.
And the interviewee feeds off of that and you get this organic fusion!
It's like the interviewee is not just an insect under a glass getting scrutinized! The interviewee isn't left out on a limb or put out front on a stool by herself just alone in the world and asked to reveal herself!
Meghan is also "sharing" so it is like 2 as 1 instead of the interviewee being picked apart! The mutual "sharing" breeds openness.
Not only Meghan makes her interviewees think but she sort of effortlessly taps into an introspection. You get more delineated answers, more depthful and true ones.
You can see them stopping to think!
So there are no pat answers rendered!
(I've happily dissected Meghan's interview style! Yaye!)
Just really enjoyed it and got alot out of it. I don't know what Center Stage is but will find out. Thank you. (Drinking on film is distracting)

Your interview style is really personal and thoughtful - all of these have been great (I especially enjoyed with Sara Mearns)! I would be really interested in seeing one with Debra Austin or Aesha Ash - not sure if you have personal relationships with them? Also, I'd love to see one with Pat Neary - and ask her to touch on dancing with Arthur Mitchell, especially in a time when part of the country was still segregated (!), her career, her work as a repetiteur, body image, her future projects, etc... :)

I love "Center Stage" b/c it introduced me to the amazing dancers of ABT via DVD in 2004, when I was stuck on a caribbean island with no performing arts for 2 yrs. I saw the Joffrey Ballet on a cable tv movie and bought tons of DVDs of anything ABT related, Paris OB, Royal Ballet, SFB (Desmond Richardson's Othello), and of Irek Mukhamedov. When I returned to the states, I was a JB subscriber/activist and saw every one of the other companies whenever they toured to Chicago and at various annual dance festivals.

I retract an earlier comment about wanting Meghan F to have asked Amanda about her impressions of M Markle. Megan F was so right not to!
Meghan F is respected by her guests precisely because she doesn't ask things like asking Amanda about M Markle when Meghan F sensed Amanda didn't want to!
Anyway, it would have taken time away from Amanda telling her own interesting life story!
Meghan F's guests are relaxed, open, and honest. You can feel it. In fact, you can see they WANT to talk!
Meghan F makes them think! But in a gracious way! Not an overly probing way!
She just creates such a warm atmosphere so condusive to just real talk!
Like we're flies on the wall partaking in it all! And she's so deft! She made a quick swerve away from the subject of M Markle and the beautiful naturalness of the interview was just allowed to keep flowing on!
    Completely fulfilling interview.

@@meganfairchild6135 Yes, I completely understand what you say! You have such GREAT antenna! Which is probably why your interview skills are so unique and exceptional, not to mention your people skills.
I detected the quickest, fleetingest flinch from Amanda when the name was mentioned.
Can you imagine how hard it was for Susan Strasberg, Shelley Winters, Jane Russell and countless others to be asked about Marilyn Monroe a million times their whole lives?!
I totally retract my comment. You are 100% right.

It kills me there are directors out there who think it's appropriate to cast non-dancers in these types of movies. One of the coolest things about Center Stage is the actors are all honest-to-goodness ballet dancers! I CAN'T with Black Swan.....omg no.

I think the worst of it in Black Swan was how after filming the choreographer said in interviews that "Natalie did all of it, that's her doing all the dancing" when we know there was a pro dancing in all the long shots! Give that woman some credits, dang it!

Clearly, you don't need to go to the "60 Minutes", interview school at CBS.
Out of curiosity, I watched "CENTER STAGE", on a DVD, and it still holds the great entertainment it is, and remember from the release in 2000.
AMANDA SCHULL, was the HOTTEST babe in that movie, Marilyn MONROE in a tutu. I can't figure out WHY they made her go thru all those jet-lagging call backs, SHE was the perfect choice for the part!!! She wasn't auditioning for the role of Scarlett O'HARA in "Gone With The Wind", for God's sake!

I've been on a leave of absence for my studies and was supposed to be back by now, but then corona happened so now I literally have nothing to do. Also I LOVED Eva's ballet in Center Stage, it was by far my favourite and it also introduced me to Rachmaninov and by extension to classical music! So I guess for all of us younger dancers and ballet fans, Center Stage was such a formative movie haha.

Ballet is my only celebrity art form!
I fan-girl so hard I’ve actually felt faint from adrenaline rushes when I’ve had rare opportunities to meet these certain all-stars...and not everyone can appreciate it (I once almost got in a tasteless fight with fellow audience members (fellow adults, row behind me) who were considering leaving a local Nutcracker production during intermission - a local production ft. INTERNATIONAL ballet stars brought to my tiny town in SC: because they: & I quote “thought there would be more dialogue.” *cringe* 🤭🙄😖- I lost my mind but my boyfriend kept me cordial and distracted - but they got some hard hair flips & disapproving side-eyes. (And they did end up leaving - Thank goodness, but not before discussing aloud during act 2 their bar hopping plans- blasphemous! 🙅🏼‍♀️)
But oh wow ballet dancers/broadway = MY all-stars: and omg love you both!
+ Megan: your Ballo della Regina & Rubies performance broadcast through NYCB digital season last week was- astounding! WOW 👏👏 You genuinely do not give a bad show. I knew you were the top of the top, but your technique: you missed nothing, & it all looked like second nature to you but refreshingly new to me, the viewer. You’re very humble & I can appreciate that quality: but wow: MEGAN FAIRCHILD, everyone! 🤩👏

I wish i could say it all but it is so tiresome on a text screen but I'll try.
I went to Russia before perestroika (before they opened up) in 1979 winter and then in 1981 summer.
Of course I have adored ballet since I was 4 years old and with the Nureyev defection and all the Russian dancers like Plisetskaya and Ulanova and Spessitzeva, and Pavlova and Ballet Russe and you could go on and on for hours so of course with all these ballet greats we all know how great Russian balket is.
But what knocked me over is the UNDYING love of ballet of the russian peasant class (the babushka women - I dont know what else to call it!) and of course all of russian society adore ballet dancers like America feels about Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson or Beyonce or Meryl Streep or whomever!
I remember one time in Moscow i was watching ballet in a theater that was a lesser theater. Not the Kirov. Not the Bolshoi. Stanislavsky theater? I just cant remember.
Anyway, of course Russia is freezing so they had the heat on so high that i couldnt stay awake.
i tried to strip my layers of clothes but i just couldnt stay awake. I was so miserable.
I told my best friend who was with me i couldnt stand it and simply couldnt stay awake.
Painfully, we decided to leave the ballet early.
When we went to coat check to get our heavy coats the big heavy old babushka-type Russian woman with the most beautiful heart just could not get over it and kept indicating no no no you cant leave, shaking her head. She didnt speak English.
We were perplexed. Maybe it was a law you couldnt leave a ballet performance early.
We didnt speak Russian. Her pleadings indicating that we not leave lasted 10 minutes at least.
We kept trying to tell her we hadnt slept and that we were so sleepy we were falling asleep in the chair because the heat was on so high.
She didnt understand and was genuinely upset.
      I felt so bad.
Somehow we finally realized that it was incomprehensible to her that anyone would leave a ballet early.
      It was a sacrilige.
And even more sad and poignant is that the mafia and high echelon authorities left the common people out of ballet.
They bought up ALL the tickets.
Ballet was only for tourists or the rich because no one else could get tickets because they were always sold out and because they made tickets hundreds of dollars.
This is such a travesty because the common people deeply adored ballet like no others in the world and the Bolshoi Theater was ten feet away but they could not enter.
And also there were big bribes for tickets. The black market etc
Keep in mind the Russians at that time had to stand in line for bread for 5 hours. The shelves were bare. They didnt have fruit or vegetables and what the market did have of those were priced so exhorbitantly that only the rich could afford it.
Olga Smoak led our group to Russia. She is a Panamanian who speaks fluent russian and knew russia well so since we were tourists she worked her labored magic and she was able to consistenly come up with tickets for us.
      But it wasnt easy.
But that was better than being impossible like it was for the majority of the Russians.
It is wonderful how much you love ballet.
I loved ballet from 1960 onward and America was way way early from any mass love of ballet in America.
You could very, very rarely see ballet. It hardly existed.
So my sister and i were true uniques and were ridiculed for loving ballet or just considered strange beings for being passionate ballet lovers.
People hardly even knew what ballet was.
Just like the Russians feel, ballet is our church.
One time in 1978 my mother, sister and I were watching an incredibly rare full-length ballet on tv. Maybe PBS. I think Giselle. Or maybe even Fonteyn and Nureyev's Romeo and Juliet. Can't remember.
One of my friends came in to pay us a visit.
He walked right in and said in a loud friendly voice, "WELL HELLO THERE!"
To be interrupted in watching a ballet was like stopping Jesus' sermon.
It was like an assault. Like you had just interrupted spiritual surgery.
I turned to him in great upset, horror, and hotly shouted, "WE ARE WATCHING BALLET! GET OUT! DO NOT TALK!"
My friend's face blanched to white and he was shaken.
Technically i guess you could say i was tremendously and shockingky rude.
But honestly i didnt feel badly about it. Even though the poor fellow's face was completely sunken and all the life had gone out of it I was angry at HIM. Even though he was technically innocent!
All I wanted to do is not miss a second more of my ballet on TV.
It was a serious endeavor more than i could describe.
Ballet was/is a church to end all churches for me.
I met impressario Olga Smoak in 1976 because my sister and I were shouting to the rafters BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO and would not stop and were jumping up and down in our red velvet theater seats when the brilliant Fernando Bujones was guest star.
He had the feet and legs of a female dancer and the most splendid clarity of technique I had ever seen. (Even though I loved Edward Villella. Villella's appearances on Ed Sullivan were EPIC. We shut the whole house down when Villella came on. Even my father loved him because he was an athlete so when he saw Edward Villella he related to him because Villella was so beautiful and so athletic) and that was the very first time my father ever liked or got to know ballet).
Bujones was a complete forerunner in men's elevated ballet technique. A balletic feline Bujones was!
We wouldn't let Bujones leave the stage.
Olga came up to us in her inimitable Spanish accent and said, "How do you do. I just had to meet balletomanes as ravenously devoted as you!"
And because of that I saw the International ballet competition in Moscow and so so much more! Natalia Krassovska and George Zoritch were there. (Ballet Russes) and 2 wonderful women I forgot the name of who had been ballerinas with Balanchine. And Olga was friends with Semenyaka, Lavrovsky, and so many more.

Amanda is way more interesting than Megan. She maybe nice person but her marriage was strange. Harry always favoured light girls so.. .
