200 Miles on the Coast of Maine on a Hybrid E-Bike: Uncut

This timelapse captured most of what ended up being a 2 day, 204 mile ride along the coast of Maine. The first day was the bulk of the footage (150 miles), and the second day starts at the 35 minute mark. I left very early in the morning Day 2 and was unable to film due to darkness. At the end, you will see why it ended when it did. The rear rack holding the generator bent beyond repair after hitting the washout on the trail. It had been slowly bending due to potholes throughout the ride, and I had to stop multiple times to attempt to fix it. I hope to complete the entire 750 planned miles someday with a much stronger homemade rack and a trailer.

How to grease a Bafang BBSHD
มุมมอง 2.9Kปีที่แล้ว
This unit had about 5300 miles at the time this was filmed.
What if you have a dual motor 1000w each, how would that wire set up look? Is it just a splitter or have to use separate chargers?
Hello Timothy: How about your battery, 52 Volt and capacity? Setting generator and your charger: With how much amps your battery is charged while driving? Average cost for 100 miles? The weight of the generator and the whole bike? Thank you very much!
Thanks for your video it’s exactly what I was looking for
great
Thanks for the video Timothy. I am planning a trip thru Southeast Asia on an electric recumbent trike. My idea was to have a pull behind trailer and placing the generator and an extra battery in it as well as misc gear. I wanted to get the most out of the generator while it is running. Do you think that when I have the generator running I could charge the extra battery, get a step down transformer to go from 120v to 48 vdc and wire up to hub motor running separate from the original battery setup, with its own speed controller AND charge the battery I am using to power the bike all at the same time?
I would just charge the battery while you are using it… that way you can run the motor and charge the battery. You can charge the extra battery at the same time with another charger
You look like Zach Efron, most likely related some way
Placing a motor would've saved you time and money... You still using gas to power the bike wether you like to see it or not...
the point is to run a gas motor generator in it's most efficient operating range. He knows he is using gas, but he's doing this for long trip efficiency
Amazing, super smart!
Directly from the generator without a battery is it possible???
Yeah you can. Kinda defeats the purpose a bit but it works.
@timothyyon6418 Y ...distance, charging time is zero...no need to change battery every...
@@timothyyon6418 1. Inverter Generator. 2. Dc Power Supply veritable. 3. Ebike controller. Missed anything?
Charging time is already zero, plus I have about 4x the power available if I use the battery vs just the generator. Also I get over 50% better gas mileage.
@@timothyyon6418 even compared to inverter Generator
BUT CAN YOU RUN IT WITHOUT THE BATTERIE.
He can, but it's not going to be 200mpg
Just had this idea. Great to see you have done it!! 👍😎🤘😃
Im working on an idea similar to this, but I have both less experience and more limitations. I live in a country where the max power output of an ebike is 250w (legally). The proprietary battery I have only charges at 100w (based on assumptions and calculations) The generator I have is a very similar one to the tailgator 2 stroke generator sold at harbor freight I believe. It can output a 50% load of 400w for 51mins per quartz. Assuming that Ill get the same efficiency at my power consumption (using the same technique as yours, so my power consumption is between 100w-350w), my mpg would be between 47mpg - 105mpg (difference is based on how much use I get out of the motor) The main problem is that I cant really make full use of the generator to get maximum efficiency. The solutions I can think of would be either build/buy a portable power station to soak up the extra power or charge other electronics like a laptop, phone etc. My current plan is to basically distribute power in parallel using an extension cord. Its a far cry from your 200 mpg haha, but I think it'll work with what I got. I was wondering whether you have anything to say about this.
Can't you just reduce voltage and plug it directly on the controller?
You don’t even have to reduce voltage. It’s just way more efficient to use the generator at max efficiency charging a battery than to run it at partial throttle. I also get way more peak power this way.
I always wondered why they didn’t put a gas generator in the truck of electric cars
so what happened??
The rear rack broke due to poor design. I had to wait at a rest stop for 7 hours to get picked up. I have since built a better one since you can’t really buy a rack rated over 50 lbs.
@@timothyyon6418 I was planning to build mine by putting the generator in a trailer.
That’s a good idea, you should be fine with that. Only 2 issues I had was the trailer tipping over (my fault) and the CO detector shutting the generator down. I had to disable it.
it would be nice if youd share more audio with us?
I would love to, but timelapses don’t record audio and that’s all I have. If I do a trip like this again I will try making an actual video out of it.
@@timothyyon6418 or text in the details.maybe? So is the bike sustem still working today?
Time lapse is ok for short parts of the video. But stopping and telling us whats going on, points of interest, the weather, (most Americans have never been to maine) where and why you stop. Even meals and lodging. It takes far more brains to create a bike than it does to make a video. Good vibes and best wishes sir!
Bike works great. I may do another trip this summer.
@timothyyon6418 how about recording a voiceover (e.g. using a free app like audacity) and putting that recorsing as the audio behind the time-lapse? :)
Good day Tim .. I currently have forE bikes and scooters and had decided I want to build a hybrid to eliminate the cost of batteries tired of only being able to ride 30 miles and I have to wait to charge but my big question is why can’t we use a four stroke thousand light generator to a conversion box 48 V 600 W directly to the controller and eliminate the battery all together rather than plug in parallel this way we eliminate the weight of the battery and the cost all together and strictly run electric current supplied by the generator and converter ????
You could… but it would be less efficient than using a charger, or just directly driving the wheel from the engine. Charging a battery allows you to always run the engine at maximum efficiency, and allows you to periodically use more power than the engine can supply. Plus you get the option to ditch the heavy gas engine for short trips and enjoy the silent electric power.
My only worry was something like this is that the battery isn't supposed to be charged when being used and you take a chance at thermal Runaway, otherwise great job and it's nice to see something like this
Nice work, building one. Now make a wood gas generator on a one wheel trailer and turn that sucker carbon neutral.
hey Tim im back lol ,,, how's the generator bike running or even just the generator after 9 months of use ,,, im about to pull the plug and get one found a good deal on a genmax 1200 25 pounds empty
Works good, no complaints
You go Tim!
I have a 52v 30ah battery. Can’t I just use the existing charger that it comes with, plug it directly the generator?
Sure. It might not keep up with your usage though. It also might be unreliable. I had to replace my cheap charger with a fanless led power supply because it overheated in the sun.
Did doing the greasing improve the motor?
It’s a bit quieter, more just preventative maintenance.
Love me some trollscience, conventional rules were made to be broken. You now have the insane torque of electric with the power density of gas ⛽️ Well done. Pro tip: Put a muffler on that generator and you're in for a much more pleasant drive.
Yeah it’s a bit loud, but not ear splitting. After about 3 hours it gets tiring so I just put in ear plugs. Thx for commenting! Best of both worlds.
sav up your money get a better frame like th radrunner or radwagon ,,, a good cargo bike style would work awesome for this ,,
thats awesome ,
i have a few questions if you dont mind helping ,,, i wat to get a rad power wagon ebike can i make it so i can use this with or without the gas going ,, like if i want to ride my bike in the country where i can use the gas or the city where its frowned on or not legal in certain places > yet still use my e bike with just battery alone ?
It’s literally just a generator and a charger. You charge the bike while you are using it with the generator, when you don’t want to use gas just remove the generator and the chargers and it will work fine
will it work the same with my factory radrunner plus charger ? what would i need o do to please help i want to ride coast to coast
@@nynut518 You will likely need to add in a connection to the main battery since you will need a charger capable of keeping up with usage, mine is about 600 watts or so. Keep in mind that you can run 2 chargers in parallel. Otherwise it’s a very simple set up. Your factory charger is likely not up to the task, I would recommend using a mean well power supply with no fans, alternatively you can waterproof a charger that has a fan with epoxy if you are comfortable. A lot of the cheap chargers don’t have thermal throttling and they can break if out in the hot sun, best to get a good one. Look up mean well power supply ebike charger.
im going to try it with my lectric ebike with its wuss 10.4 battery, can i use my 7 lb jackary as a charge controller? i plan to put the heavy stuff in my bike trailer
hello, after driving about five or six km, the pedal support power goes out, I wonder what the problem is when you give the gas.
Sounds like your clutch is out. If you put to much grease on it will stick.

Can i swop out my BBS02 for the BBSHD as an upgrade with out having to change any other parts ?
As long as your battery can handle the extra demand, yes
