    Firstly, well done. It's a bit nerve-wracking and the internet is full of people who will tell you where you went wrong. You might consider, once you've told your base that you're landing out, turning the radio off or the volume right down, to prevent any distraction. Even on a smooth field, stopping quickly is a good idea, just to avoid the rabbit hole that you didn't realise was there. Lastly, well done.

    Why don't you make a right turn up after the release? This is a standard procedure for us in Germany.

    • @oliverkirial
      @oliverkirial 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Normaly the glider turns to the left in Denmark. This was a special competition rule. "Fly straight ahead, and the tow plane will fly towards to airfield".

    • @jhmcglynn
      @jhmcglynn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! We in the US also turn right after the release. I also noticed that you had the air brakes up for about half of the ground roll we, of course, in the US keep them closed during the launch.

    • @oliverkirial
      @oliverkirial 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jhmcglynn My LS1-f does not have a nose hook, so i use my CG hook for aerotows. This can sometimes give some problems when the rope is tightened in the first part of the aerotow. The wheelbreak on the ls1-f is in the airbrake so i have them open to put pressure on the break, so im sure i dont run over the rope in the start. If that happens the hook will let go of the rope. The day before i dident use the airbrake and this happened. But this is not a problem with gliders with nose hook.

    A pilot in Colorado recently died due to thunderstorm related 50 knot tailwind gust during landing turn to final. The possibility of tailwind gust justifies your very high speed during approach. If you have the runway length available, maybe it makes sense to land as fast as possible. A lightening strike of a composite glider would be destructive. Gliders are not Faraday Cages as are metal or IFR-rated airplane. I hope to never see this happen in a TH-cam video. Another pilot in Colorado landed off airport to escape a thunderstorm, but died because he hit a fence post.

    • @phunkstar7347
      @phunkstar7347 ปีที่แล้ว

      not 100%sure. But as you dont have an engine in a glider you need to calculate if you make it to your destination. Glide ratio, Air/Ground-speed and altitude is a thing. And a calculator is helpful in that regard You can see airplanes or in particular glider like a battery. You always trade speed for altitude and versa with the exception that you still have drag/weight and contently lose energy (Speed/altitude)

      @ianbenning2833 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wet wings increase the stall speed. Increase speed to avoid stall/spin/crash in these circumstances.

    • @oliverkirial
      @oliverkirial ปีที่แล้ว

      During such violent weather there is a lot of turbulence and wind shear, and there it is important to keep the speed high. I flew very fast to avoid a stall but also to get down quickly as the weather turned very bad very quickly. The plane was not meant to land at such a high speed and actually bounces back up. You can also hear that I was a little surprised myself. But because of the water on the window, I had difficulty judging how far down I was in relation to the ground.

    • @julianreynolds9076
      @julianreynolds9076 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of speed👌

    • @Mango-df5jw
      @Mango-df5jw ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that such a high speed was not necessary and even made the approach a bit more dangerous (because of the higher probability of bouncing off, especially with the more severe turbulence, etc.) than it should be. Nevertheless, it is important to have a higher airspeed in such conditions (as already written above, because of stall speed, turbulence, ...) than in calm conditions. However, 160-170 km/h is clearly not necessary. But if you aren´t experienced in such conditions yet, then you might exaggerate, that´s totally understandable

    • @hyime69
      @hyime69 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oliverkirial The problem is you are in a Catch 22 situation you need speed because of water on wings and possible wind shear but you also need to be aware of the Max Rough Air speed so as not to over stress the glider

    While I haven't flown the LS1, I would venture that you are "stirring the pot" too much: there is no need to be moving the stick so fast all the time. It also looks like you need to work a bit on making coordinated turns. And finally, it seems to me that you got to the ground a bit too fast. In any case, congrats on a successful first outlanding!
