  • Glider landing in thunder and lightning
    I experienced lightning and thunder on the last part of the flight. I sounded pretty scared because it was definitely a wild experience for me.⚡

    Well, that was certainly a high speed approach :)

    it's like being in star wars, at light speed

    Nice job, like the final grip on the stick!

      Which you have to pull back on after landing to avoid being caught by the weathercock effect. Especially in windy conditions.

    impressive !!!!

    You were cruising. Not sure if the airspeed indicator is kph, mph or knots but you hit 235, well past Vno (clean air speed). Glad you didn’t hit any gusts!

    • @doraemon00722
      @doraemon00722 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is 235 km/h

      V/Max is 250 KM/h , but you are right here, under these conditions it`s very risky!

      The rough air speed of the LS1F is 250 kph so i was within the limits!

    Did you pull your airbrakes at 200 kph?

    A pilot in Colorado recently died due to thunderstorm related 50 knot tailwind gust during landing turn to final. The possibility of tailwind gust justifies your very high speed during approach. If you have the runway length available, maybe it makes sense to land as fast as possible.
    A lightening strike of a composite glider would be destructive. Gliders are not Faraday Cages as are metal or IFR-rated airplane. I hope to never see this happen in a TH-cam video.
    Another pilot in Colorado landed off airport to escape a thunderstorm, but died because he hit a fence post.

    You landed at very high speed, was it to handle possible wind shear (which may be possible in such conditions)? I had a similar experience two days ago.

      Wet wings increase the stall speed. Increase speed to avoid stall/spin/crash in these circumstances.

      During such violent weather there is a lot of turbulence and wind shear, and there it is important to keep the speed high. I flew very fast to avoid a stall but also to get down quickly as the weather turned very bad very quickly. The plane was not meant to land at such a high speed and actually bounces back up. You can also hear that I was a little surprised myself. But because of the water on the window, I had difficulty judging how far down I was in relation to the ground.

      Plenty of speed👌

    • @Mango-df5jw
      @Mango-df5jw ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that such a high speed was not necessary and even made the approach a bit more dangerous (because of the higher probability of bouncing off, especially with the more severe turbulence, etc.) than it should be. Nevertheless, it is important to have a higher airspeed in such conditions (as already written above, because of stall speed, turbulence, ...) than in calm conditions. However, 160-170 km/h is clearly not necessary. But if you aren´t experienced in such conditions yet, then you might exaggerate, that´s totally understandable

      @@oliverkirial The problem is you are in a Catch 22 situation you need speed because of water on wings and possible wind shear but you also need to be aware of the Max Rough Air speed so as not to over stress the glider

    Whew. When you land off airport, how do you get the craft back home? Also, if you land off field, and destroy crops, how does that work? Who pays the farmer?

    • @oliverkirial
      @oliverkirial  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So we have a special glider trailer with is easy to put the glider in to.
      If we land in a field and destroy anything, then we have insurance for that part.

    dont fly that fast in rain, the sealings and tapes on the glider are damaged if you do.
