Late June BWCA trip with start at entry point #50, Cross Bay Lake. One day and 6 portages to Long Island Lake where we base-camped for 3 nights. First trip for father and son (Joe and Gabe). Lots of rain and about the worst mosquitos of any trip in the past 30 years. Stayed in bunkhouse at Tuscarora Resort/Outfitters the night before entry. I highly recommend them. @@richarddear2568 Tim, my trip partner says the storage or “house” battery is a Dakota Lithium LiFePo 24V, 50Ah. That company has a more current model that is 55Ah, he thinks. Motor has its own battery. Storage batter is a separate “Dakota” battery that is shown in the first few minutes of the video. Solar panels charged the Dakota Lithium battery and motor battery charged with combination of current from solar panels and Dakota Lithium battery. With physics and electricity working, faster boat speeds consumed much more power (power vs boat speed NOT linear). Going 1-2 mph, we could almost go forever with panels up. Going 5 mph, we drained batteries (motor and Dakota storage/house battery) pretty fast. We generally cruised around 3.5-4 mph most of the time. Of course, wind and bigger waves had effect on efficiency of the system as well.

      Never caught a laker of the right size at the right time of the day, so we did not dine on any. As non-Canadians with a Conservation license, we were not allowed to keep/eat any of the brookies/specks. And, we were there before walleye opener, so did not really target walleyes at all. So, whole trip was catch and release. Next time....

They owned an outpost camp on one of the Islands east of Shakespeare back then. Went out there when the Lake wasn't too ruff. I loved it there!! Gros Cap, Blackwater River, and the area where you camped the first night was great Lake Trout fishing and just east of there was a good Speckled Trout spot between the Islands. There was access to Tea Pot Lake close by and up a small creek. Thanks for bringing back the memories. I am 75 years old now, but Nipigon lives in my soul!!

    Did you build your boat from plans? I haven’t seen plans for a 20 footer. A thanks, gtreat video

    • @EricREvans
      @EricREvans 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was Tim’s boat (the one of us that caught all the big lake trout in the video). I asked him about who built the boat and where he got the plans., here is his answer: “The designer was Bruce King. It’s his adaptation of the 20-ft Boston Whitehall in the Mystic Seaport Museum (or maybe just the plans are there). King gave the keel a bit of rocker and cut back the vertical stem a bit, which makes it easier to maneuver as a pleasure craft. I had a traditionally built 17-ft Boston Whitehall previously from the design in John Gardner’s book. Great boat also, but a bit hard to maneuver. A craftsman in South Bristol who did fine interior cabinetry work on King-designed yachts had the plans and built the 20-ft boat for me about 15 years ago. It’s a lovely design, but you wouldn’t want to go near the guy who built this boat.” Thanks for your question. Hope Tim’s answer helps you.

    No bear or moose troubles?

    • @EricREvans
      @EricREvans 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We had no bear or moose issues. Saw the one moose in Henry’s Harbor on Kelvin Island. Saw no bears. We saw moose prints almost everywhere we went to shore and often moose prints on the bottom in shallow harbors/bays. Saw bear tracks on a sand beach in a harbor on Kelvin Island that were probably a few days old. Never saw the bear, though. We slept on the boat and did all of our cooking on the boat as well, so that likely minimized chances of bear encounters. I think there might be greater chances of meeting a bear if you camp at one of the established campsites on the islands.

      Noted. GoPro12, iPhone and and old Fuji camera at 1080 res 60 fps all used on this trip. I have had issues uploading finished video to TH-cam (very long upload and processing times). Have checked and this video (as is usual with YT) initially uploaded in standard definition (SD) and then took several hours to finish processing to HD (1080). You may have watched this video before the processing to HD (1080) was finished. Also, when watching on my desktop, was not pleased with resolution even AFTER HD processing was completed and found out by checking settings button in YT player, resolution was at 720. Had to change player to 1080 and then resolution was better. In future, goal is to get videos to 4K res. Should be able to do that with the GoPro12.

    Great trip, beautifully photographed and narrated. This is an expedition I have always wanted to do, and it is nice to see there is a road-accessible boat ramp at High Harbour. You nailed the timing just after ice out with the lakers and brookies in shallow water. Your electric-powered Whitehall was the perfect boat for this expedition. i love the "Tyvek tent" with the its gunwale-supported hoops and clear windows. Clearly a lot of thought and work went into the construction of this item. Tenting on board is a good plan, I think, since flat campsites are few and far between on this lake, and this keeps the food out of reach from the abundant black bears. Thanks for posting this wonderful video and trip log.

      Have a good trip! I find TH-cam videos others have done helpful when planning trips; like to pay it forward a bit with my trip videos. Parking area at Beaverhouse was more crowded than I expected. Still plenty of room for parking. Road in is OK, but narrow and rutted/rocky in many places with several “blind” corners. Go slowly. Water levels were a bit low last fall, so portage from parking area to Beaverhouse was longer than I expected (about double the length). We saw more people than I had expected as well. Still, great to be out there!

    Would this make the canoe a few pounds heavier? Can you do just one coat?

    • @EricREvans
      @EricREvans 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, adding resin will make canoe heavier. More coats = more weight, but more protection. Would guess canoe shown in this video was 2-4 pounds heavier after the two coats. Could do no coats at all and just let the canoe wear through. One coat. Two coats or more, I guess. Like most things in life, it was a trade off. In retrospect, I would likely have NOT added resin coat up the sides as it was unnecessary in my opinion and didn't add value, especially for the added weight. Canoe is still doing trips, now 8 years since I did this repair/coating. Holding up well.

    It's wise to use multiple rags and lots of acetone. Acetone is so darn volatile that it can dissolve oils and grease--then flash off so quickly that it redeposits on the surface I've used WEST system for years and never had a pump failure. Certainly the large capacity professional pumps are bullet proof. Possibly they have recently cheapened up the small kits that they sell to amateurs. That happens when the bean counters take control of a company 🙄🙄🙄

    Ingredients and instructions for cinnamon rolls in this video: Cinnamon Rolls: Basic yeast bread recipe: 1 level Tbs. yeast 1 ½ cups lukewarm water 2 Tbs sugar 2 tsp salt 2 Tbs oil/margarine 3 to 3 ½ cups flour (½-1 cup extra flour for handling) 4 Tbs. margarine ¾-1 cup brown sugar 1Tbs cinnamon ½ cup walnuts or pecans ½ cup raisins Plastic bag for rolling dough (place over seat pad or sleeping pad) Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water with sugar and salt. Cover and let sit for 5 min in warm spot until it froths. Add half of flour and beat vigorously 2-3 min to develop gluten; the wet batter will smooth out and start to get a little stringy. Add margarine and remaining flour (have some extra flour saved to use in handling dough) to get a thick dough. Flour hands and knead the bread on a floured fry pan. Knead with heels of clean hands for about 8 min., folding when dough becomes too sticky to handle. Dough will be silky and springy when done. Press into a loaf and place in a well-oiled pot, pressing dough out to touch the edges. Oil top of dough lightly. Cover and set in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size. Roll out ball of dough using round water bottle (on large plastice bag over sleeping pad or chair) into large rectangle ½ inch thick. Mix margarine/oil, brown sugar and cinnamon until creamy and place on dough or just sprinkle on. Sprinkle on nuts and raisins. Roll into jelly roll, pinching ends and seam to seal. Slice roll into 1 inch slices and place in pan. Cover and bake in baker oven or in pan using twiggy fire and coals for about 25-35 min. Let cool slightly, take to a flat rock by lake’s edge and watch the loons play while eating rolls and sipping coffee. 😁

    I have seen some debate on whether to use epoxy resin or polyester resin to refinish the outside of a kevlar canoe. I went to Western Canoe and Kayak yesterday in Abbotsford B.C. to ask this as they are also the factory where Clipper canoes are built. I was told to use polyester resin. It is what the ultralight kevlar canoes are made with. He said it's much easier to work with than epoxy, and will bond better because they are the same material. He said to lightly sand the surface but not so much that you are getting down to the kevlar. Another good thing is that polyester resin is much cheaper than epoxy resin.

    • @EricREvans
      @EricREvans ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I agree. Did this repair 7 years ago now. Learned a lot. Has held up very well, but if I ever do this again, would use polyester resin. That said, I am old. Would likely sell this canoe and put $ toward a new canoe if there ever is a “next time” for me. (Bought canoe in this video in 1993. Did re-coat in 2016, 23 years after initial purchase. Might need another re-coat in 2039 if I am not in nursing home by then. 😝) I continue to be somewhat amazed at how many views this old video gets. Must be a lot of folks with beat up old Kevlar canoes in this world!

    • @ianbruce6515
      @ianbruce6515 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You were misinformed. Kevlar canoes are made with vinyl ester resin. Older, heavier fiberglass boats were made with polyester--its old technology . Epoxy has excellent adhesion.

    I'm curious how this epoxy system has held up over these years?

    • @EricREvans
      @EricREvans ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to believe it has been 7 years since I did this re-coat and made the video. Epoxy coating has held up very well. No delaminating or peeling. I am about to take the same canoe on a BWCA trip in June 2023; about 7 weeks from now. I will post a video of that trip, probably in July. I think I have more than got the value out of the canoe purchase: bought in 1993 for around $1595 new. Picked it up at Wenonah factory and took it on its first trip to the BWCA the next week. 1-2 trips to BWCA a year for 30 years. Average of 8-9 days a trip, so maybe 50 trips X 8 days/trip average = 400 days in BWCA. So, around $4 per day. And, I could probably sell the canoe for around what I paid for it in ‘93. 🏕😀

      Thanks for your comments! Tent in that video is a Marmot Limelight (3-person). An older model of that tent. Very roomy for 2 people. Bent poles make side walls more vertical and interior much more roomy. My spouse likes it. Easy setup too. Good for canoe trips; I would not (do not) use it when backpacking. On backpacking trips or canoe trips with other groups, I have converted to hammock camping (Kammok brand, Mantis hammock system). I do like to cook and eat well on BWCA trips. 😃 Disappointed in the bug shelter. Love it in almost all ways but not being waterproof really disappointing. Would probably keep you dry in a light mist, but NOT in any kind of moderate to heavy rain. Have not used it since that trip; may try it again in summer 2023.

The eagle flew up further down the shoreline. Where we passed by it again. Once again it flew up ahead. When we arrived at Cowa Bay. The eagle was sitting in the same tree where you filmed it. At that time the eagles nest was further back in a dead tree. We sat right there and caught a bunch of little walleyes. My brother decided to try and feed the eagle. So he caught a fish. Banged its head on the gunnel a few times and through it up on shore. In the middle of his wind-up. The eagle was already launching itself to swoop down and plucked up the fish. We have fed eagles a half dozen times. If you are going to film it. Have your camera recording before doing anything. I have missed some great shots by not being ready. Have the person not handling the fish doing the recording. Our last trip we fed the same eagle 4 times in 45 minutes. The first time my brother got out of the canoe he cut the fishes throat then turned to get into the canoe. The eagle dropped out of the tree and picked up the fish 5 feet behind my brother butt. The next time. My brother put the fish down and stepped back 10 feet. The eagle swooped in while he was standing there. The third time we couldn't see the eagle so threw the bass up on the same rock. Two minutes later it swooped in from the opposite direction and surprised us. It said "thank you" on the way back to eats eating tree. We fed it one more time. It was getting pretty dark. I lined up the eagle with a rock in-between us. My brother threw the fish up un the rock. The eagle was supposed to fly straight towards the camera. Unfortunately the eagle had shifted trees without our notice. But it did fly straight towards my brother. He got a great view. We have stayed at your last campsite on Saganagons. If you have plans of heading back up there . I can share some nice fishing spots. I hope to be in the area in June. Thanks for bringing back memories

    Pumps do screw back together. You need to check them in between uses. If you do know a ratio don't use it you could end up with a disaster. They rotate with use if you let them. Pumps are fast and let you mix any amount you want. Used pumps for years they are great only popped one once. Check them there's no problem with them.

    You do a wonderful job documenting the camp set up, scenery, and food. You are a backwoods chef. 👏🏽

    Another great video letting me live vicariously. Thanks! I can feel the enjoyment and peace of those woods. Maybe someday you could do some videos about your gear, packing, hammock sleeping setup, cooking, etc.

    I apologize for any ads when you click on this video. I wish I could eliminate them but somehow TH-cam won't let me. I will not buy the stuff that is advertised in these unwanted, pop-up ads. EE

    Sorry about the annoying commercials when you start this video. Wish I could eliminate them. In protest, I will never patronize any business that runs these ads on my videos. For example, “Pillow Cube”…don’t ever buy their product!

      @@juststeph6701 Feel free to share. I’m not that into the whole TH-cam channel/viewership/numbers thing. Don’t care and use TH-cam mostly to share the beauty of the outdoors and be helpful to people planning trips. Thanks.

    Sorry to all viewers about the ads. Wish I could eliminate them. I guess just boycott any business that sullies free, not-for-profit recreational videos.
