Man, that was therapeutic! Coolest car vote goes to the black 1940 Willy's coupe with the 283!
This was when we were having fun and it was affordable. I had a '36 Dodge business coupe with a 392. Now it is too expensive to go watch.
one of the best, if not THE best drag strip in history. the place to be, even in fun-packed SoCal.
Drag racing 1970's Aiken South Carolina
I remember that era. Helped with a 57 chevy running in N stock. The good old days when the average person could compete. those days are gone forever
I’m a FORD guy. My first Job out of the USAF in England was asst svc mgr at one of the oldest Ford dealerships (1913). Went to the British Grand Prix Prix at Silverstone when Dan Gurney brought a “409” Chevy. When Dan would open that “409” it sounded like a bomb exploded. “BLIMEY” was all you heard from the stands. The Chevy broke an axel or it would have mopped up the field. I wasn’t around when the “427 SOHC Cammer” was introduced. I did have a 1965 Comet Cyclone that I put a Cobra cam and dual point distributor in. I could mop up 327 Chevys. Owned many Fords and presently own a Ford C-Max Energi - the best car I have ever owned (including MB 500 SL and BMWs. Love your story!!!!
Seeing that image of Johnny Lopers "Lil Hoss" took me WAYYY back to the 60's cruising Central Ave In Phoenix, A lot of us use to hang out at Indian School road and Central. once in a while we would hear that Anglia cackling just down the street. We would jump in our cars and dash down to watch Loper's and watch them tune or test.... On Indian School road. Made that evening great!
100 % correct mid 80,s built a c/gas nostalgia car what a blast , its still running actively at events the RUDE STEWED, 54 studebaker
AWWW, you forgot Wild Willie Borsch !
During the presentation there's a shot of Sheldon Konblett's "Snoopy" Jaguar XK-E funny car. Although not mentioned, this car crashed at Lions in 1968 and driver Johnny Hoffman was killed. One of the darker moments of Lions Drag Strip.
Nice vid!! Lots of great memories there!! Can you do one of Altereds?
THE BEST times in Pro Stock!! ENJOYED THIS immensely!! 👏🏾🤣🥰
Stickel & Riffle's Willys had a small block Ford in it when I watched it at National Trail. Pulled the front wheels in 1st and 2nd gear. Nice car.
Those were the best days for me. I was 23 years old in 1967. Gettin laid pretty regularly by 21 year old chicks and racing in the streets with my 62 Pontiac 348 HP. .Loved those days.
[1:16] Joe Lunati's Trouble Maker was NHRA national record holder in A/modified sports
There was one but only one 66 galaxy 500 with cammer
On the Tasca Ford Mustang, Was owned by Tasca Ford, ,Bill Lawton was the driver, Bill Lawton owned Lawton Moving Co. He was a Super Driver in his day.The car was tuned and prepared by a super wrench named John Healy
Great video , lots of memories here. I have a 37 Chev coupe Gasser now. Always loved the Gasser era. Many thanks..
I went to work at the Spires coffee shop on the corner of Wilmington Avenue and 223rd when I was 12 years old. I lived on Sepulveda and Avalon when I was a boy. I went to Lyons dragstrip many times as a boy and young teenager. When I grew up, I went to work at the Arco refinery and I currently work at the Phillips 66 Refinery in Carson. Which is about to close at the end of 2024.
10:30 Does anyone know what's that square peice on the front bumper?
But, oh man, what it used to be!!! Yah babe!
Coolsville man
Kalitta was gassing. Timing chains stretch, just as sure as the sun comes up in the morning. Take off the timing chain cover of any modern OHC engine and look at the extensive tensioning and guide system. Gears are the best way to drive overhead cams.
Love the cool vintage pictures Great!!!
I saw cammer drag cars race in 1966-67. In general the cammers beat all GM cars and were more than an equal to the Hemi.
Loved watching your video, brought back many memories. Do you have any videos on the 1966 Super Stock Nationals from LongIsland NY.
The best class ever! Thankfully, there are still some gassers today in nostalgia racing and I still love to watch them.
Stone woods and cook were the best I was 16 years old and spent a lot of time at lions Drag strip watching Stone woods and cook.
What came first A/FX or funny car ??? That's drag racing biggest question ...
What about Big Bad John Massmanin gasser? He ran against Stone, Woods &Cook alot.
Great job! Brought some great memories.
I went to Irwindale Dragstrip almost every Saturday from 1964 to 1969, I saw many of these cars run, however, I am surprised that you did not mention Big John Mazmanian.
When bracket racing began I quit
Great collection of nostalgic drag cars.
That brought back some wonderful memories, 😊 thanks 👍
71 year old muscle car collector I've had multiples of everyone in 1966 I was at the opening day at New England dragway I seen all these cars I walked over to the fastest car that was there was the 40 willys ask him how much he wanted he said $1,400 I only had 12 100 without a Cadillac engine and he wouldn't sell it the only time I failed to buy a car thank you for the great memories next time showing running wolf Lynn Massachusetts
Back in the day, 2 or 3 blue-collar guys could pool their resources and run Pro Stock. Let that sink in for a minute. Today it takes a big company, or a very wealthy individual.
I grew up with the gasser era cars and built many models based on these examples. Harry Hurst built and ran the Willys gasser now owned by Dale Lang, and still runs at the Coles County Dragstrip west of Charleston, Illinois. Coupes and sedans! What fun we had!
Are u gonna repost the video on the dragsters?
If a new track is approved anywhere! Local laws must state that the track is in operation an noise will be an issue! No noise complaints can filed! You don't move that to a sewer plant an complain about the smell 😅
Since everyone loves the old gassers, why couldn't a track start the fun back up? If a drag strip was built, would people get back into it? ❤❤❤
The number one destination in early 60's for me and my friends. Finally took my 57 Chevy. in '61 to race one Sat. but as I did not have a scatter shield around bell housing they would not let me run. Lions was great, lots of famous drivers and race cars ran there. My favorite was Jim Lyle and Big Al (1) a '34 Ford sedan with an Allison aircraft engine.
You omitted one of the greatest Coney Island Ralph he ran at West Hampton speedway and New York National Speed way a great racer
Priceless!!!🏁I have been very lucky to see them run many times at Nostalgic events, this is a fantastic compilation.Saw Gene Schwartz run in the beauty a few times.👍Thank you
21:10 Willys pickup truck is from the SLO POKS car club of Vancouver, Washington and was driven by Wayne Harry. The truck never has a name.
16:49 minutes.....Jack "the Bear" Coonrod is from Vancouver Washington and is a member of the SLO POKS car clube est. in 1952
That is such a badass.
What if it blows up? Try again.
Close enough
I liked Pete Robinsons geared cam drive conversion. Mostly just because the looks of the chain don't appeal to me as tidy or solid even if chain stretch weren't an issue. Camshafts aren't roots superchargers. Lots happens when they lose the connection. If i were running a cammer in AA/FD and were filthy rich I'd have bought the setup if Pete were sellin' 'em.
Lived in Carson. Used to go all the time
