Anxiety is not an Emotion
มุมมอง 2122 ปีที่แล้ว
Many years ago I happened upon a realisation that 'Anxiety is not an emotion... but that it contains within it specific emotions'. And that each of us and in each moment those emotions will be different. There could even be a cocktail of emotions. This is so helpful in helping guide us toward how we might attend to our needs when we are feeling anxious.

    With me it is loud sounds that continue. Such as fireworks or even popping balloons. It’s not just once but multiple reactions.

    Take a deep breath and pause it while keeping all your muscles relaxed? That’s almost impossible, especially with no chest and stomach tension. It just feels like I’m sucking my neck in which is probably still tension.

    I came here looking at why I feel nauseous off and on during practice. This was very helpful. I also have preexisting vestibular issues. This is only my fourth time practicing. Sometimes I get nausea even just getting on the floor for a bit

      Glad this was of help. It sounds like just changing your position or level is causing your vestibular and autonomic nervous system some pertebation. The general rule I'd say is before you get moving sense the ground, AND see the ground and space, move in a way that you can continue to sense and see the ground and space clearly. Best wishes :)

    would appreciate more structured steps to do when hearing a trigger/ not hearing a trigger. thank you

    • @mollytipping6731
      @mollytipping6731 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. So firstly I'd say once we are triggered what we need to do is just get out of the space we are in so the system can settle. And then slowly we can build up capacity to change our nervous systems without leaving. And as a general rule you have to practice outside the triggering situation to build the neural memory so that when you are triggered you can clearly find your way to that process/practice that settles/grounds/refocuses you.. It's similar to meditation in that after a number of months you find you can choose the learnt behaviour outside the home practice and slowly you can use it in stressful situations. :)

    nope this isn't protective. i have misophonia and my life is hell. I'm startled by everything. i also have sleep deprivation and tinnitus now. fans and white noise don't help, i think it's reactive tinnitus because I hear high pitched sounds with white noise. I also have severe tmj. doctors act like i can control this or overcome it by sheer force of will. this is hell, please help.

      Hi Cindy. I am a Feldenkrais Practitioner but have also trained in Ideokinesis and Pilates. I come from a Dance and Improvisation background and have done many years of Body Mind Centering and Bartenieff Fundamentals. While I have not studied Thomas Hanna's work he was also a Feldenkrais Practitioner and a philosopher. He coined the word Somatics and I teach Somatics at a performing arts university so he is included in the discussions on the linage of Somatic Practitioners. I am very interested in Philosophy so perhaps we have a similar way. :)

    Thank you so much for this video Molly. It has really helped me. I have been suffering some anxiety about a very specific situation and couldn't work out my mixture of emotions. Guilt! Guilt is a big one...then I have to ask myself why? For me its admitting my own limitations. Accepting that I cannot help in this situation without it threatening my own wellbeing....the anxiety is a warning to myself that I have to stay away from this situation as its going to hurt me if I don't. The guilt is about feeling I am letting someone down if I don't get involved. It feels like a lose/lose situation. I have responded by backing away and not getting involved and preserving my own wellbeing. But it has not been easy to do this. I am left with the guilt : (

    • @mollytipping6731
      @mollytipping6731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm yes. This is good. It we can get clear on what is truly present and honour it thats step 1. The somatic question might then be what life-giving actions can come from guilt? Sometimes there is nothing to be done but let love and kindness exist for ourselves and them. In this situation you sound as if you are honouring your limits which is wonderful. But maybe you have capacity in smaller, different ways. Perhaps it's a walk and talk, perhaps it's a batch of muffins, perhaps its sending a letter/text acknowledging the complexities and letting them know you can't offer support right now but you love them. Sense into humanity - for yourself and for them. If we can connect with the love for self and others and listen deeply we can find the nurturing expression of all emotions.
