Why I Left My High Paying 6-Figure Job: Group HR Manager
If you're at a crossroads in your career and not feeling anxious about your current role, this video might be helpful to you! I explore my career history, how the mentality of 'wanting the next thing' led me to my most recent role, and how personal/professional values conflicts can lead to #anxiety and #burnout. I talk about my prioritising my young family, and reevaluating what's truly important to me in my life.
I am someone who has always been highly ambitious; a work-horse and willing to put in the hours. After going hard at my career for 10 years, I've decided to redirect my energy into areas that give back to me.

I work in the trades but have always had an interest in psychology and helping people. Do you think it's possible to transition to an HR career? I am looking at community college certificate programs in Canada. Would that be enough to get an entry level position?
@@Shannon_Robbie that’s great! Coming with existing work experience is always beneficial. A certificate is a solid starting point, but it depends on the employer and their entry criteria. If it gives you the foundational, theoretical knowledge, and a taste of what to expect, either way - it will inform you of whether or not you would like to pursue HR, so win win!
correct it should be the will of god so you will that your in the right path.
I try to let my decisions be guided by His will x
Im about to start my bachelor's degree in human resources, I want to be an HR Coordinator, only thing I truly worry about is everyone saying (Employees hate HR). I don't want to feel like Im being hated every day... to everyone working HR is this true?
@@mlxplays I don’t think this is necessarily true, but you do have to learn about professional boundaries quickly. It’s also likely that some HR functions get a bad rep because they don’t operate transparently. I suggest watching one of my other vids “three mistakes new HR professionals make” 😊 Good luck!
@@annefloreskepu Thank you so much for your response! I will definitely check more of your videos out.
Great video! Having balance in life is important especially with being a mother as well as a professional .
Hi Anne, I recently came across your content and really enjoyed it! You're doing an amazing job. I was wondering if you could help me with some guidance as I’m preparing for HR roles in Australia, I’ll be moving there in the coming months or by early 2025. I have experience in recruitment and HR operations, and I’m curious to know if any certifications or short-term courses are necessary to boost my chances of securing a job in the HR field. Also, do you know of any companies currently offering remote opportunities in this area? I’d greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations you can share. Thanks so much in advance, and have a great weekend ahead!
@@Shristi10 heya! Thanks for stopping by. Most Australian businesses will look to your working experience over qualifications. The fundamentals of HR are relatively unchanged across markets from what I’ve observed. That being said, if you do want to upskill, I recommend having your existing qualifications assessed to see if they’re comparable to Australian studies. That way you don’t have to invest in studying all over again! There are a few services that offer a free assessment. As for remote - when I find one I’ll be applying myself haha! I don’t see many of these opportunities pop up. All the best!
@@annefloreskepu Oh girl! I really impressed with your prompt response. Thank you so very much for your recommendation, will definitely consider that. All the very best!! 😊❤️

Going to start my master's in HR journey soon. Today I found your channel and wow, let me tell you I'm so inspired. Any tips for students or beginners like me who want to pursue their career in the field of HR (specifically global HR)?
I'm so glad you found my channel and found it helpful! I suggest watching my other videos on more junior positions - e.g. 'Life as an HR Coordinator' which you can find here: th-cam.com/video/Ux2eLX3CDdo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xPMZm6MEATFabTPV
Doing my masters in HR, coming from the Mental Health. If anyone is willing to connect please let me know. Much appreciated. I really want to enter this field with as much knowledge as possible. Thank you!!
So great! Hope you enjoyed the vid and good luck with your masters.
Hi Anne thanks for sharing your journey with us HR professionals. I wanted to ask if there was ever a time you worked for an employer whether part time/ full time as well as practising HR consulting as a side hustle ? What would your advice be on those looking at heading down that route in their HR career?
@@keekzsm320 I have for a short period of time, and I would not advise it! Working in HR you aren’t able to just switch between employer/ client easily, because the work you’re doing can at times be all consuming. Managing the expectations of your client/s while also managing a full time HRBP/HRM job is a quick path to burn out. Practical sense - you could be working on launching an engagement survey as well as driving annual performance reviews, and then your client is phoning you in hysterics for a redundancy process they botched up. It can be overwhelming. However - if you only stick to email advice with clear SLA’s (service time frames) it’s far more manageable, but that might not be as appealing for some businesses to work with you. It could definitely work - I just don’t recommend it if you’re in a high responsibility role with an employer and working with complex cases for clients at the same time.
@@annefloreskepu thank you for your response, this is great information to know and have as up and coming g HR professionals. Is there a specific exam or a certain level of qualification that one has to ascertain in order to be able to practice as an HR consultant ? Would you be able to give your thoughts on the best pathway to this for when we do finally work up the courage to venture out on our own as consultants ? If you have or ever run any masterclasses on HR related topics I would pay money to learn from you. So thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us in this platform which comes at no cost. Shows your level of expertise and heart for people, much appreciated.
@@keekzsm320 Cert IV in HR is always a good start, and would strongly suggest at least 2-4 years in HR business partnering before consulting. You can find yourself liable in litigation for advice you provide clients! And thank you - so kind. Sign up at bestillconsulting.com.au to be the first to know when the course drops 💃🏻

Do you get vacations being an HR? Like how many times in a year.
Yes absolutely, depends on your company and country’s vacation policies/legislation. Australia gets 4 weeks of paid leave for every 12 months worked.
I also want to become HR can u tell me how to start right...?? Like ik but sometimes it just seems wrong
Hey there! Check out my earlier videos where I talk about being an HR Coordinator or “what it’s really like being in HR.”

Haha thank you! It feels good.
Remember kids, HR is there to protect the company, not to help you.
Well, yeah. 😂 HR is also there to advise on legalities around employment, which protect the interests of the employee. Like I did here. “You cannot withhold pay, because the law says no.”

Thanks for ur great video 🎉 a really tough experience at your company. I know assist hr practitioners and my manager. As hr admin. To summarize: - my HR Practitioner role was discontinued, but you were promoted to Senior HR Practitioner without requesting it. Since company had retrenchments - was put on a 6-month trial without a salary increase, despite taking on triple the workload. - After 6 months, I was demoted to HR Administrator with a 60% salary cut due to perceived poor performance. - - You're still expected to handle a 70% heavy workload, similar to previous HR Practitioner role. - felt bullying and rude from boss - I applied for other jobs within the company, but haven't been successful. Remember, I deserve to work in a healthy and supportive workplace hence I'm thinking of quitting.
HR sucks. Completely useless department that does more harm than good. It needs to be abolished, and the regular bland, SMALL personnel department of the past, needs to come back. The most HR should do, is shuffle paperwork like I-9 forms and insurance benefits, and stay out of the way of the people doing real jobs. Half of the nitwits in this department have no idea what the managers are actually hiring for, and they actually make hiring LESS efficient (I’ve had their incompetent slack cripple projects of mine because they were filtering out quality candidates before we could even talk to them, thereby slowing the overall process, and setting our project timeline back). FAR too many of them think they’re psychologists, and they’re… NOT. Many of them do idiotic trash like conducting long debunked personality testing, or trying to enforce speech codes that are moronic and go well beyond the utter basics of just not being a racist or sexist twat at work. Ironically, HR is not a “resource” for employees at all. It’s a defense mechanism of a weak company. No one with a real problem with another employee should EVER go to HR or “People Experience” or whatever other lame euphemism they’ve come up with. HR are there to protect the weak company from lawsuits, and HR are often the least adult people in the room. They're more like “Mean Girls” turned into a department, hell bent on making workers lives miserable. When I find out someone works in HR, that’s the person I never talk to unless forced to. They’re a PLAGUE upon modern business, especially to people who just want to come to work, do their job, and get on with real life. HR absolutely DETESTS the mission-focused worker who doesn’t want any part of their nonsensical drama. Cut this department, and hire actual workers at decent salaries. You’ll save SO MUCH MONEY as a business.
I'm sorry to hear you've had such a terrible experience with whichever HR teams you've worked with. Good luck with everything!
Hi Anne, how did you get an HR position at 19? I'm a 3rd year psychology major and have been applying to internships in HR but haven't heard back from any yet. I have a lot of work experience but nothing specifically in HR. Do you have any recommendations for how to get an HR internship without prior direct work experience in HR?
Heya! I have a video on how I got into HR. I was fortunate to work for a company that needed this support and grew into the role. I recommend reaching out to your university also for intern programs!
Really great video as a HR pratictioner myself - I greatly benefited from it.

HR, it seems. None of these idiots know basic English; they can't even distinguish between resignation and termination. Dressing up as models, big flashy vain smile and anything but honesty... ye have all these? Welcome to corporate hell!
Sorry to hear you've had such a terrible experience with HR. As for my outfit or my smile - I'm not here to apologise for my appearance and I don't believe anyone should be judged for how they look. Good luck with everything!
im in my final semester of a bach of commerce degree majoring in HRM.
That’s great! I hope you’ve been enjoying the course work.
hi! how hard is it to land a first job in HR with no experience but an MA in HR?
Hi there, that actually puts you in a really good position! Most employees will look for at least a bachelor in HR for entry-level roles. on top of that, if you have work experience, this puts you in an even better position. Good luck!
@@annefloreskepu that is something which worries me currently... I am applying for a master's in HR which is CIPD level 7 accredited, with only a Bsc in psychology to back it up. I heard that such high-level HR qualifications should only be pursued by people who are already experienced in HR roles. My head is spinning :D. In your experience, is this true?
Plenty of people in HR have psychology degrees :) And generally higher level qualifications in HR require capstone or workplace projects - the theory is learned, but you might find it more challenging to apply it into practice in your assessments. Again, depends on your work context. Good luck!
Nice video
Thanks very much!
I hope HR is better in the uk than here in the US. They are a bunch of robots who are NOT there for the employees but the company
I’m from Australia 🇦🇺😊 Fortunately we have very strong employment laws so employers are really bound to do the right thing.

Hi there! I am currently a nurse. I graduated with a Nursing Degree, but I was hoping to pivot to an HR position. Do you have any recommendations on how to transition?
Heya! Your study pathway is quite different to the skill set required for HR. Do you have working experience in the HR space? I recommend completing a few elective courses/units in HR to see if you like it, before making any decisions. Recommendations would be to align your studies to the career you’re after, especially if it requires specific skills. If you have access to a careers counsellor or any HR professionals on campus, it’s worth reaching out to them to share their experience/views. Good luck!
so inspiring 🔥💁🏼♀️🦄

I’m starting a job as an HR Business Partner, $100k. How long would it take to get to $150k-$175k do you think? And at what level would I need to be at?
This is really dependent on your skill level and ability to influence change. At $150k you’re looking at a mid-senior HR Manager with people management responsibilities. If you’re not already leading a team, I recommend looking for opportunities to do this, and brushing up on your business acumen.
