    Question, I live in nc, & have Ice plants in planters. Should I take them indoors in the winter? Or what do you suggest?

    • @Garden-Oasis
      @Garden-Oasis 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      No, not at all. Ice plants are hardy down to zone 5. You don’t have to do anything where you are. It will survive your winter just fine, even if you have it in a pot. I have some in a pot and some in the ground, both ways work. It will go dormant just like all the other plants and wake up in the spring.

      I’m sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, your seeds may be nonviable. If you scratched them like I show in the video and soaked them, then you did all you could do. I’d try buying another batch and try again. However, I’d try it in spring, it’s pretty late in the season for canna seeds. You’ll have enough time to get them to maybe a foot tall at most before they slow down in the cool fall weather. Cannas need heat to thrive.. Unless you’re in a tropical area, then of course, go for it 👍 good luck! 😊

      @@kmanmott6162 it doesn’t matter what direction it points. It could be facing straight down and it will still grow upwards, or vice versa. In nature, when they fall to the ground, no one turns them and faces them in a certain direction. They’ve evolved over millions of years to be able to find up for their leaves and down for their roots. Just drop it in the hole and cover with soil. Can’t see why it would die from this, unless it was already dead. This process just makes it so the plant can have maximum hydration. It can’t hurt the plant, unless you leave the bag in the sun, like I explain in the video…maybe you’re mistaken and it just looks dead. Did you do the scratch test? Maybe the branches are still alive. I’ve brought back many hydrangeas that looked completely dead with this method (hydrangeas lowes had thrown out). Try scratching it to see if it’s still green inside.

    There's waaaay too much commerce where I live for deer, and even for me, but when my dog and I encounter them running along the wooded paths in the 5k acre nature reserve closest to me, they don't even flinch. They stare me down and my dog, a 55 pound Am Staff/lab/boxer mix, freezes and refuses to make eye contact. I don't blame them at all. We invaded their homes and moved them to a tightly controlled location, and with the way the industrial revolution has devolved and destroyed God's natural order, our deer, coyotes, foxes, and in some areas wolves, mountain lions and the like don't have a choice but to step outside of the boundaries they've been assigned to find food. Don't mind me - this is a consequence of choosing to major in environmental sustainability

    • @Garden-Oasis
      @Garden-Oasis 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree. We’ve messed with the natural order of things, taken over their natural habitats and they have no choice but to live in our yards and the small patches of what my town calls “forest preserves” but half a block is hardly a “forest”. That’s why I don’t mind them being around. I think they’re sweet and gentle. They decimate the whole town’s arborvitae every year but, I mean, what else are they supposed to eat 🤷‍♀️? We destroyed the forests and won’t let the grass get tall enough to eat. As soon as it gets above two inches tall, there we are with the mower.. So I’ve just learned to let them enjoy my arborvitae and plant other things around the arborvitae that they don’t like so we’re both happy. They still get to eat and I get to garden. 🪴

      I use miracle grow potting mix. They come in different kinds like “moisture control” ect. but it really doesn’t matter which one you use. Honestly any potting mix, from any company, will work. The whole point of it is to have good drainage. If you water your plants and it runs right through and doesn’t sit on top, that’s a good potting mix. And for planting in the ground, Autumn/Fall weather is really good. The scorching heat of summer has passed by then and the baby plants go through minimal transplant shock. And they get a few months to root in before winter 👍

      The Tropicana series are hybrids so maybe it’s just something that happens with that variety. It’s probably something the breeders had to accept with that particular cultivar, in order to have a canna with such dark leaves.

      @Garden-Oasis 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@susanpharr6809 I replied yesterday but somehow the comment disappeared 🤷‍♀️ so let’s try this again lol I was saying that it very well could be the heat wave. I have three very mature hydrangeas (that I’ve never had problems with) whose flowers have gone crispy and brown. I tried and tried to water but it didn’t help. I think the problem wasn’t the lack of water but that the plant couldn’t send water up faster than it was evaporating from the big leaves. So far only the flowers and the edges of some leaves have browned so they’ll be ugly for the season but I think they will make it through the rest of the summer and live. But if yours are worse than that, I’d probably use a shade cloth over them to help them out. Shade cloth is breathable so they’ll be able to get some air. I have other ones that are in full shade under trees that are holding up pretty well 👍 so I know shade makes a big difference…and if yours are already in full shade.. then I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ what you could do to save them. I have a pathos about this big, although mine is a little fuller and longer. I have never used any kind of fertilizer in it in the ten plus years that I've had it. When I had bought it, it came in a six-inch pot, it's been transplanted throughout the years with the pot having to get bigger and bigger, as it now sits in a 30" pot. The only thing that I have ever done with it throughout the years was to re-soil it every spring using only Maricle grow's moisture control potting soil just once a year. I live in zone 5 and had to dedicate my entire spear bedroom to this plant! I rarely water it during the wintertime, and it sits draping over a gigantic steel utility rack in front of a window that gets indirect sunlight. It's a beast! I would be very interested in finding out how much bigger my pathos would reach if I were to use the fish fertilizer in it. By the way, I just found your channel and I love it!

      Would you believe all of this is growing in a 12” pot? I’ve repotted it only once in the 5 years I’ve had it, from the 6” pot it came in to the 12”. And it’s been in the same pot, in the same soil since. I imagine it would get fuller with bigger leaves if I repotted it. But I’m keeping it confined to its 12” prison because I can’t have it taking over the whole house, like in that movie Little House of Horrors🤣 I don’t often water mine either. I wait till the soil dries out and then deep water with a water reservoir under it to catch the runoff and then act as a makeshift self watering container so I don’t have to water for a good long while. If I leave it unwatered for too long, some leaves yellow and fall off (that’s those bare spots lol) and that’s when I know I’ve messed up again and go check the soil. I feel like with house plants, it’s way better to underwater than to over overwater. Overwatering is the kiss of death.

      You can cut as soon as when your cucumber vine has 5-6 leaves. You can cut the top two nodes for your cutting and leave the rest for your current plant. It will branch out like any other plant would. If the cucumber vine is super long (as it probably would be by this time in the summer) just cut a piece off. It could be two nodes or as long as you want it to be… I say two nodes because one node would mean the very tip and that’s probably too tender to make it on its own… anyway just place in a glass of water and it will root.

    When do you cut them?

    • @Garden-Oasis
      @Garden-Oasis หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dormant cuttings are cut in winter. You could cut them in December or wait till just before they wake up in spring. You just want your cut them while the buds haven’t opened yet. Then you just store them in the fridge till you’re ready to use them

      Annabelle hydrangeas are a bit tricky, especially in water. They’re a bit weird that way. I always do Annabelles in winter as dormant cuttings. They work much better and give you less work to do. You stick them in some potting soil while they’re still dormant (in winter) and leave them alone for the most part. You’ll still have to water them once spring has sprung and they’ve leafed out, of course, but the success rate is way higher 👍

      @jfred1924 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Couple of questions then, do you use cuttings that were new growth, old growth. Pretty sure I have to use a leaf nodes for the roots to start. What about rooting hormone? Do you stick it in a sunny window, dark corner? Actually, if you have a website where I can read up on it, I would not have to bother you with a bunch of questions. Thanks so much, Jeff

      @@jfred1924 so dormant cuttings are a different animal from regular fresh cuttings. You wouldn’t put them in a window because you leave the pot you put them in, outside. To be snowed on and to freeze along with everything else. They’ll actually NEED to stay cold in order to survive and come out of dormancy when the other plants do, in spring. And they do great as single node cuttings so you can get many more plants from one branch. I’m actually working on a video for Annabelle as hardwood cuttings. I’m waiting to upload till I have a complete start to finish process in one video. I’ll be uploading as soon as it’s ready. You’ll have something to follow this coming winter if you’re interested 😊👍

    Question. I have a few Invinciball smooth hydrangeas that I put in the ground - they got a little more sun than I thought and they started to dry up and one shriveled up. Can I do your method by taking them out of the ground and re-potting them first - then your method. Let me know thanks.

    • @Garden-Oasis
      @Garden-Oasis หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes absolutely. If it’s in a spot where it’s getting too much sun, it’s better to dig it up anyway. Otherwise it will definitely struggle when we get to the hottest part of the summer (which is yet to come). Dig them up, put the roots in a bucket overnight (no need to plant it yet, if it’s already dug up) after the treatment, pot in some fresh potting soil and place in the shade. If it hasn’t died completely yet, it should come back for you. Once it has recovered (in the fall), pick a spot with dappled shade as its permanent home. Good luck! 👍

      If you’re in the US, any garden center has them at this time of year. I’d check Lowe’s or Home Depot first as you might get lucky and come across a sale. But if you need to order by mail, then google it. Google will take your location into account and give you the best option for you. Just Google “Delosperma ice plant” and click the “shopping” section. 😊Good luck! 👍
