Downtown Gary, Indiana - Abandoned Places Then & Now
Check out Downtown Gary, Indiana, and take a trip back to the early 90s to see how it stacks up against today. We’ve got a bunch of photos, mainly from Bob Jenkins, who shared them with the National Register of Historic Places back in 1993, showing the same abandoned spots as they are now.
Back in 1990, Gary had over 116,000 people living there, but now it’s down to around 67,000. Just how deserted was the Steel City three decades ago, and how much has it declined since then? Take a look and enjoy these beautiful abandoned buildings and streets.

Applies in st louis as well as detroit memphis etc.an evasive species terraformed it into lawless rubble so the humans retreated further into filthy rich suburbs. In st louis they embrace ignorant obnoxous savagry because theyre barely capable of productivity.

I'm not sure this is the park I visited many years ago. I can remember buying tickets and sitting in seats and watching a couple guys riding on jet skis performing tricks off a ramp or slide. On the other end of the park, that's where the rides were. I'm guessing this was back in the mid 1990's. We traveled from mid- Michigan.

The dog actually jumped through an open window on the upper floors and fell to its death by landing on the lower roof. The building design is deceptive because the top floors are perimeter construction only with the roof at floor 9 of a 21 story building. They weren’t there because of a fire but performing sweeps of homeless people when the incident occurred.

author of THE DEATH TAX sez: Really found this depressing, the Railway Exchange (which I knew as Famous Barr) and Chemical Buildings (which I once climbed the stairs all the way to the top and stood on the roof of), and magnificent Cleveland High in particular resonating with me. Glad to see from Dom's report that at least some of these bldgs. are being repurposed, though sad any of them have to go (remember the sense of loss I felt when the Arena was demolished while being most grateful Union Station was saved)--no less than pieces of HISTORY in this once grand old burg. Sadly, Detroit has a similar vibe, and the sad thing is you get a sense of how GREAT these cities were.

Yeah. I was 10 when it opened and I remember riding my bike there so many times in the summer, later during my teen years. School clothes shopping at Sears, JC Penny, and Hudson's, if you were lucky! ($$$) Always something to do there, but this is a bygone era. It used to be a place to socialize as much as to shop...get an Orange Julius, maybe a giant cookie. They still had toy stores back then...K.B. toys, and also Babbage's for software...on floppies! Lots of nostalgia.

Wow - amazing. When Fisher 1 was closed, THIS building was completely refurbished in 1991-92 and was 'supposed to be' maintained as a historical landmark. GM execs and middle mgmt for Flint Automotive Division , or FAD (manufactured large front-drive cars for Pontiac, Olds, Buick, and Cadillac - like Bonnevilles, Park Aves, Devilles, etc) occupied the building, along with employees from its data subsidiary Electronic Data Systems. I was on the second floor of the building, in a cubicle at an end window looking north along Saginaw Street. It was a tight space, and was awkward for placing cubicles, but it worked. The nearby Great Lakes Tech Center (GLTC) was essentially new, using some of the skeleton of the original Fisher plant - was a very nice building for its time. The GLTC housed GM engineers designing components for all FAD-made cars. Such a shame to see if that way today - so much history there for GM.
