From the UK comes videos of repairs, arcade goodness and retro consoles among other subjects of my interest. These are NOT professional videos, rather how personal endeavours go for me. Also these are not the be-all , end-all of how to do things, I'm just showing my own stuff!
But regardless, hopefully atleast one of my videos is interesting or educational to you but either way thanks for watching!
Remember to like, subscribe and *smash that bell* to be notified of new uploads! Thats what the cool kids say, right?

Making my own Dance Dance Revolution cab!

Konami's System 573 - Everything you wanted to know about it!
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Konami has some of the most well known games in the gaming industry, from Metal Gear Solid for consoles and DanceDanceRevolution for arcades... But what hardware actually ran the latter? Is it complex electronic voodoo or something far more familiar to us all? And what is with the 573 number being everywhere?! UPDATE: Turns out that the digital board RCA plugs are self-terminating ARCnet ports!...

PC in God dawn wall!
How on earth the CD4050 even work without VCC and GND?
Electricity will always follow the path of least resistance, but also if you send 5v into the device’s inputs, any components or internal resistors etc will leak current to the power rails. It causes undefined behaviour
@NaokisRC I moded my Atari for composite only by adding some resistors to the CD4050 and one cap. And discovered that the GND of the 4050 is OK , only the voltage is around 3.6V so I added only one conductor from nearest 5V pont to that IC . So if you do not add proper 5V the results are simsiler to yours , jumping unstable dark picture , and normal RF functionality. But when you add those 5V the picture form composite become normal and stable , but the RF become much brighter. So I will try a resistor for the RF cable to see if it will darken it. My approach is to not remove any part from the system, only add , just like you :) the only problem is the jail bars , but this is issue with the NTSC TIA , the PAL is jail bars free :)
А я на родной куллер посадил резистор на 47 ом. Тоже тихо работает, но без hdd адаптера он вообще не вращается😊
You do want the fan to be working when the HDD isn’t spinning. The PS2 doesn’t need much cooling but it does need the fan
@@NaokisRC нет , я без hdd играть не буду. У меня даже ни одного диска нет. Я специально брал ps2 fat для этого☝️а с резистором пробовал играл продолжительное время и оставлял консоль включеной и она чуть теплая.
How to install ps2 games into the HDD?
I'm glad a teardown video exists for this. I've got one that is having major issues so I'm glad I'm not going in blind.
But how much of an improvement was the fan???
i would kill for one of these
Am I hearing the retro bird theme song? 🤣
I’m restoring a time crisis 1 deluxe cab, and the transistor array was cracked in half by a massive current spike, likely because of the broken fly back on the solenoid in the gun. I was wondering however, did you make that time crisis list of pins and connections public? Can I download it somewhere ? Or just for your personal archives
Do you have your plans published for public use o could you make available? Looking to build a full size step-mania cab.
This design isnt suited for a full scale version of itself, it would need reworking entirely
That "5, 6, 7, 8" absolutely caught me off guard
HELLO, I HAVE A PUNCH MANIA FOR THAT SYSTEM, BUT I REQUIRE THE FILE FOR THE RTC TIMEKEEPER CHIP, DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT FILE IS? THANK YOU VERY MUCH, GREETINGS.
SSD's are overkill for old hardware since the speed will never be utilised, a modern HDD is plenty good for older low bus speed hardware. More storage for less. The Noctua fan or any silent fan is a downgrade since it pushes out less air as a result cooling less than the original blower fan. You want to always replace the fan, the fans are usually made from Nidec and new replacements can still be found that sound quieter than the original but also outperforming the Noctua.
SSDs actually have better random seek times, are instant on, silent… etc. I said this in the video. As to the fan, A: Im not using a noctua, and B: it kicks out the same amount of air as the original fan did at the same speeds, but is still quieter. I didn’t do these things without doing research before hand
I want to try this, I have one and a half ps2. I want to make something portable, i.e. battery screen system. And I think this system might work for repurposing basic E waste that I got for free. The power consumption is the major factor . This will possibly solve that issue.
just one minor point - apparently the ATA controller can actually support up to 133mbps, not only the default (and officially used) ATA-66. This is possibly of benefit if using newer versions of OPL with support for these faster modes.
I switched to ssd. I like the lightweight of it. Modded ps2 is goat. Gitaroo man doesn't get passed the tutorial tho 😢
Whats that for an Model? I never see it Europe. Slim Mainboard, no Radiator, big FLEX cable for DVD Drive, Air Mesh/Filter, 10 Srews outside 😮
What bit did you use to remove the security screws in the SATA adapter?
Hey man! I was wondering if you can make a tutorial on your boot menu. How did you make it so oem?
Just by modifying the config file a bunch to move things around. FMCBs menu config is pretty configurable, if a little hard to follow at first!
Thank you so much for this. THANK YOU
I keep getting a “200 network adapter not detected” code on mine when ever I enable ETH as Auto. Don’t know if it’s my network adapter access point going bad or what.
i agree 100 percent. matches my experience, compared to modding all the other consoles. i thought xbox was tricky but i've been messing with ps2 homebrew solutions since the beggining and its changed so much, there are so many options, different methods, different apps, app specific scenarios, compatability issues etc, its a mess. things do get better, but theres alot of outdated solutions out there which all work if done correctly, offering different results. there needs to be some recap videos of the different options, and covering the latest greatest methods which are still evolving - exfat drives, ditching winhiip and hdldump, or ms4sio. going the old way provides the ability to use pops, but the newest quickest solution doesnt come with this feature but transfering games is much simpler. using the premade freemcboot memcard images helps, understanding which opl, and ulaunch for whatever task you need helps too.
It is funny as I'm watching and I see you found an alternative to the Noctua fan as I have one coming in the mail right now. I also had this thought. After watching I'm glad I just paid for the Noctua fan. However, really nice work!
For once, a video game examined from the inside.
This video is such a wealth of knowledge - thank you for making it and for your contributions to making the open source schematics and SDK! Those will undoubtedly be instrumental in maintaining these machines and preserving such an important portion of gaming history.
SpicyJPEG made the SDK, not myself just to be clear 🙂
I actually like the fan and HDD sounds to me it's part of the experience I don't think I'll go SSD or noctua fan
wow never seen this on my life so amazing old tech thanks man
What model is your PS2 3900x? Ps2 fan so loud
Epic video. Just modded mine with that GELID fan. 12v model but will start at 4.5v so works with or without the Network adapter. Thanks again
iidx mentioned
The thing is a damn pc tower 😅
The first "konnichiwa"
100% in agreement. I'll go as far as saying PS2 modding and homebrew use is the most cumbersome and pain in the arse of any console I've ever worked with - which at this point is all of them.
The ATARI 2600 is almost old enough to be an official Vintage object and you just made a hole in the case, that it not "reversible" 😉
I think you will find I didn’t drill or make any hole in the case that wasn’t already there from Atari, lol
I bought the MX4SIO with a free mcboot memory card, I heard that when launching a game you had to change your free mcboot memory card for a normal memory card to save your games. Is there a way to have the games save straight to the free mcboot memory to avoid switching out the memory cards all the time? cheers.
Hello I use helders fmcb memory card with mc2sio and I save games on my memory card. Doesn't really effect anything that I've noticed. Just be careful when erasing save data I guess. Other people may be more experienced than me about this though.
The hard drive bay was also supposed to be used for games that need an update with online games and there was a browser 2.0 update at some point that would add a hdd icon to the browser where your memory cards are displayed soo it could theoretically be used as a giant memory card also a good pc software for managing games and hard drive is pfs batchkit manager it lets you convert/decomcpress ps1 games lets you compress games to zso format it even supports zip extracting soo you can zip up all your games soo you can fit more on your pc to do a big install of them all it also creates elf files for ps1 games for opl app tab and has a server thing i never used it as i have gamestar adapter only issue is you cant use it to delete games and renaming seems to be buggy but if you rename before hand or use its built in use name from database its fine you can just delete games from launch elf's hdd manager in the misc section and you can rename them there too and sorry for lack of punctation its a mouthfull to read i failed english at school lol.
Somehow arcade systems based on PlayStation felt like the best for me. You can see IIDX, DDR in it's past using it, and the PS2 to PS3 era with Tekken 4(if Im correct?) to its T6 days Just shows how really impressive the PS was.
Or rather, how cheap and easy it was to use. And DDR super nova is based on a literal ps2
always love hearing the nitty grity details of arcade hardware from this era, excellent work. also nice chapter titles lmao
Thank you!
Why am I somehow not surprised Konami used a slightly upgraded psx?
They loved the PSX hardware, even IIDX got its start with it.
What OPL theme is that? I'd love to use it 👍
Emotion Engine is think it was called, or something near enough
@@NaokisRC Awesome! I'll have a search around. Thank you 😊
Is the intro song a remix of After Burner?
Indeed it is!
What was the part number for the wrong laser assembly? That's the one I need...
KSS-210A if its correct?
PAL Sonic sounds so slow lmao
Because it is lol. Sonic 2 and later were better as they compensated for the 50hz region difference
@@NaokisRC The PAL version of Super Mario Bros. attempts to do the same, but the developers overdid it and so PAL SMB actually runs and sounds faster than the NTSC version.
hey, i've got the chinese version of this hdd adapter. Some games dont work properly (Out Run 2006 for exammple, the in game music while racing doesn't play) IF I MOD A ORIGINAL IDE ADAPTER adding a Sata conector , those problems should vanish right??
The adaptor doesn’t convert anything, just exposes the ps2’s existing IDE. It could be a drive incompatibility but you can certainly try a Sony adaptor
Dude, I did all this shit with a 1TB HDD that I got completely full with games and it was absolutely worth it, now 8 year old me can be happy as fuck
I did make a follow up of using an ssd and newer software and I do agree
Change the laser lens!!!
camt wait to see the finished product
Will you put in a small CRT?
As explained in the last episode (even though briefly), CRTs wont fit. You need a certain amount of depth for the beam of the CRT to scan across and there are no CRTs that fit in the depth available
@@NaokisRCWas thinking u could use a small CRT like from them small sony alarm clocks, again would be a cool idea but in practice not so easy, I play DDR Extreme on a CRT just dosent feel the same on LCD
Theres a lot of reasons as to why putting a CRT in would be much more hassle for less worth, such as needing to convert from HDMI to analogue and then spoof the EDID to run it at a lower 15khz resolution, its far easier to use an LCD in this case and actually makes it more playable at a distance
