Welcome to MattKeepsFish!
I made this channel for two reasons: show off my fish and describe what it’s really like to keep them.
When I created my first aquarium I struggled to find the kind of content that I needed most, so I started making it!
My videos are informative, visual-heavy, and meant to offer a window into the many pros and cons of owning an aquarium.
Please leave comments!
Part of my goal in making this channel is to create a dynamic resource for people like us; I will always respond to questions - no matter how old the video is (unless they're abusive... then I make them disappear 😁).

Thanks for the tip. How long can you keep washing and re-using a sponge filter for? There must be a point when you have to buy a new one
There is. The sponge may start to break down, or be unable to take its intended shape again after being compressed. At this point it would make sense to replace because it would otherwise eject plastic particles into the water, or be unable to properly pass water through its pores.
@ thanks, I’m new to this! Well I had goldfish as a child about 30 years ago, but now my daughter wanted a pet, so we thought fish would be the easiest pet for her, i slowly realised that wasn’t the case 😂 it’s ok though, the fish we’ve got only have a lifespan of 3 years apparently, so if she gets bored, it’s not too long for me and the wife to be looking after them! 😅 EDITED to add, actually there’s something quite relaxing about watching fish swimming around merrily in the tank! Plus the water was cloudy for about a week, and I thought I would have to buy something to clear it up, but it cleared up by itself, which is nice. 😁
Very nice :) I’m glad you’re enjoying it
You most likely have to change out the filter media at some point but probably not all at once. It might take years tho
Who throws out bio media unless it’s falling apart? If you do, you’re doing it wrong.
So would a school of emerald adult Corys not be good with one?
I didn’t have problems between him and any catfish, so you may be okay with that one. Here he is housed with glass and twig catfish.
Kind of rad not gonna lie
Majority of those have carbon in them and they get saturated after a month, ask any marine hobbyist
This is true. The rub is that you’re also disposing of the floss.
This needs to be said more often.
I accidentally replaced my filter cuz it was all black and i added new ones, my tank is only 1 week old. I hope my fish wont suffer 😢
Feed very lightly and test water weekly if you can. Hoping your fish do ok 🙏
Lots of plans is what I have, I watched another channel he use small gardening pots to make caves, use the method to make caves for each female I have
I live in Canada. Why is medication illegal in canada? Where did you order the med from?
Most hard meds for fish are illegal because of our strict laws on invasive species, environment protection, etc. The internet says it’s because they’re untested, but I think the real reason is that they’re worried treated fish will be released into the wild and take over. In case you didn’t know, they’ve also banned more species for us, including all mosquito fish and salvinia. Annoying, because neither would survive our winters. I ordered on Amazon. 50/50 it arrives or it gets stopped at the border.
Just clean the sponges with the same aquarium water and put it back in it doesn’t need to be replaced unless it’s damaged lol
Sponge filter 👍
Great advice
Im on a year now with the same ceramic rig and sponges I just change my floss when I feel the need
If I don’t have a quarantine tank should I just remove all the substrate in the display tank and treat it with the medication? Thanks.
Do your fish have Camallanus? If so, then yes. It will make it much more difficult to remove the worms if they’re under a layer of substrate. Don’t forget to remove the chemical filtration as well!
@@MattKeepsFish yes one of my guppies has it, not sure about the other one. He keeps getting close to him so I wouldn’t be surprised. We have a small temp housing box for them but we were trying to decide if we should just leave them in the tank and just remove all the gravel or move them to the temporary tank. We tried API general cure which I read won’t work. We are waiting on another product to try which has good reviews. I removed the carbon out of the filter while the general cure is in the tank and hopefully all this can go away before the fish dies. Thanks for the video I will try it out this week.
Lmk if you need to talk anything else through
@ unfortunately things have taken a bad turn since we couldn’t get the medication delivered in time, he can’t even stay upright anymore so we moved him to a temp tank since it seems like he doesn’t have much time left and I don’t want the worms to spread anywhere else. At least we will have the medication for next time.🥲
I’m very sorry to hear that. These are, unfortunately, the things we remember best for future projects. I would still encourage you to monitor your other fish closely for signs of infestation. How many others was your guppy with?
And I don't use carbon anymore he sponges and shit themselves keep my tanks pretty clean they just have a fishy smell at least it's not rotten eggs tho
Never ever change them unless there falling apart first cuz if there falling apart then they will cause problems like gunning up the filter and making it cut out then u change them but I had filters last 6 months
Yea u rinse them out every few monthes unless the stuff is falling apart then u get rid of it cuz by then there enough beneficial bacteria in the tank itself to hold the tank together and u use tank water to rinse them so ur not using tap water and killing good bacteria cuz chlorine in tap water will kill bacteria as well
You don’t look high bro, you got them world war z zombie eyes!
😂😂😂
This kinda blew up
Hey Matt, just had ya pop up on my feed. Hope ur doing well come by CJ soon😆 -Ryan from CJ
Oh no way! Hey man! I’m doing alright. I’d love to come in soon and hangout, maybe even make a video :D
@ haha could be cool, we maybe about to make a big supplier change and gonna be able to get some veryyyyy rare stuff just visited the supplier and picked up some of my dream fish I never thought I’d see haha
@ but ya come in sometime soon!! Got some cool stuff recently coming in you might like :)
Do you recommend quarantining fish?
Absolutely.
Only a scam if you let it be . The filters can last no less that 10X MAYBE 20X whatever the package says. The father fish guy says never changed it. Depends on your fish but with proper live plants all you have to do refill from evaporation. Someone i watched did an experiment and stopped feeding completely after having an established tank running for years. Some fish died but 85% lived and became more self sufficient.. but he had a nicely planted tank..
Here is one, airstones. They break being dropped once, trying to pull the hose off, clog up. They the worst construction over all.
I have the loaches, otos some pea puffers horseface loaches and a hillstream loach with the twig catfish all doing great in a 20gal tank. Fishon
Hello love your videos, I was wondering if you have any advice on how many green kubotai and ember tetras could be in a 20 gallon long with good filtration and heavily planted tank. I was thinking around 20 total. Is that to many?
That seems good to me :) Go slow, and be patient with the process. You likely have room for more than that.
The best filters have separate inserts for bio/carbon/mechanical filtration. As far as the basic, on the back filters, I've always liked Aquaclear. You can clean/replace the mechanical filter pad with ease while leaving the bio-media in there practically forever.
I’m with you! Have you tried the new fluval HOBs yet?
@@MattKeepsFish no, been out of the hobby for a few years now, going to be getting back in soon though.
What fish species is that in the last few seconds of the video? Looks like a trout with a bit of orange speckles.
A male Bolivian Ram. Beautiful fish.
@@MattKeepsFish thanks. I’ve gotta get a pair. They look amazing.
Here’s another look: th-cam.com/users/shortsNIDdkLeVA50?si=ph6lyjZ2N5emqCok
@@MattKeepsFish Oh not, those. Sorry. I was referring to the smaller ones. I'll see if I can find them. Those BR's are awesome tho.
I thnk they're called Galaxy Rasbora. Very cool.
This is why you buy an aquaclear or a canister and throw all cartridge filters in the trash lol
I had a juvenile delhezi bichir navigate its way into my anchor catfish tank. I walked in confused not only by the bichir being in the wrong tank but his face looked funny. Needless to say they both survived the ordeal with a little human intervention. Anchor wears the scars to this day My anchors eat, micro pellets. I don't know why but they go crazy over it.
Glad to hear everyone’s okay! Mine seem to be doing okay on micro pellets these days, but I wish they were just a little more active, even as much as a clown pleco would be amazing! Lol
Can it co-exist with a Betta in a 5 gallon tank?
This is something I have yet to test. If you’re going to try it, have a backup tank in case the betta becomes aggressive and you need to return the tetras. Best method would be to remove the betta, redecorate the tank, add the tetras, and then the betta. This should reduce territoriality in the betta, but it won’t change what it chooses to prey on.
@@MattKeepsFish Thanks!
My 100 gallon was set up 2 and a half years ago I've never changed my filters never cleaned them never changed the water just added water to top off maybe 10 gallons in the past 2 years and my water is still crystal clear
Nice man! What do you keep?
Majority of products and chemicals in the aquarium hobby are all scams. Designed to get the lazy who won’t research and the ignorant to spend as much as possible. Doing the appropriate research can make the hobby cheap and so much more enjoyable.
Sponge filters are amazing as long as you don’t mind the sponge being a piece of decor
So true lol I’ll just have some giant barrel decor to put them in haha
I have a hang on back filter with a Carthage and have never thrown it out
Can I leave a piece of bio sponge floating in my tank?
Yes, but it won’t be as effective as if you put it in a filter for this reason: filters force the water to be processed by nitrifying bacteria. You may as well add lava rock if it would fit the aesthetic (wash thoroughly first), because it will have the same passive filtering effect.
@got it! idk if I can put it in my sponge filter though haha
