Armies and Battles
France
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ก.ย. 2016
Armies and battles focuses on the analysis of military forces and the battles they fought through time, with an emphasis on the First and Second World War. Since my youth I have a keen interest in history, in particular World War Two history. Military history was my major in university and I wish to share my passion for historical research with my followers.
Market Garden derailed on the first day?
Operation Market Garden had a serious delay on the very first day. Initially the German defenses collapsed under the weight of the artillery barrage and the armoured assault. Helmut Kerutt rallied several dozen men and fearlessly ambushed the British vanguard. As a result the British attack lost its momentum and the advance did not even reach Eindhoven. Market Garden was delayed for a crucial 24 hours, which gave the Germans time to set up defenses in Nijmegen.

Escape of the 15th Army. Montgomery's greatest mistake(s)
มุมมอง 4692 หลายเดือนก่อน
In September 1944 Bernhard Montgomery missed at least four opportunities to destroy the German 15th Army on his left flank. This would come to haunt him during Operation Market Garden, when this army crashed into his flank, severing the supply lines several times. Sources: * Dwight D. By the end of October the German 15th Army was holding on in Noord-Brabant, south of the river Meuse, to buy time for Hitler's planned Ardennes offensive. Though exhausted, the 6th Parachute Regiment played a pivotal role in the efforts to keep the Allies at bay in key cities as Bergen-op-Zoom and Roosendaal. The glider problem of Operation Market Garden (1944)
มุมมอง 881ปีที่แล้ว
The combat glider made its debut in 1940, but it was not until 1944 that its mass deployment was planned. Operation Market Garden (1944) was not only the largest airborne operation in history so far, but also the largest glider operation so far. The glider brought plenty opportunities, but also posed numerous problems. In this video I will explore which ones.

Montgomery launched Operation Pheasant to crush the German 15th Army in Noord-Brabant. Operation Suitcase was a part of this effort in to shatter the 346th Division and encircle Battlegroup Chill. Update: According to an official German rapport on Oct.3 1944 of 719.ID sent to 88.Corps , Mager's 2nd Batallion of Fallschirmjäger Rgt.6 consisted of : 5 Companies 250 men with 20 le.MG's , 6 s.MG's , 6 m.Gr.Werfer. This included 6.Coy. of FJR.18 'Stephan' as the 5th Coy. and depicted as the heavy Company. So it seems that each of the 5 companies had a strenght of around 50 paras on Oct.3 1944. The exact time however is unknown at the present, but gives a good indication for the situation of this unit strength in comparrison to it's performance. The Pz.Jg.Abt.719 had 4x 7,5 Pak(Sf)
There was a lot of military Abbreviations in my grandfathers war records But was was apart of the Lincoln & Welland Regiment And it was common that others come into the regiment to replace the dead And wounded/tired However even his regiment was used to insert replacements to other companies He was on a Artillery tank But then a forward scout for 2 other Regiments as he spoke French And English And Cree (Not a part of the code talkers) He was wounded twice in or near Bergen Op Zoom.
Update: 13.Oct.1944 KIA on Rilland-Bath / railway dam. 3./FJR.6 'Müller' : Ojg.Hochheimer Ofhnr.Reindl. Since Beringen FJR.6 absorbed remnants or persons of other units . These were never listed as KIA being part of 1.,3 or 4.Kp of I./FJR.6: On the 13th of Oct. Gfr.Wolf. 6./743.GR Pfeifer of 6./743.GR DOW in Roosendaal on the 14th, but it is not clear if he was WIA on the 13th.
Interesting. I just ordered the book: The Last German Victory, to look at response times. There are several "historians" like J. Holland and A. Murray, that seemed to have used the Arnhem 80 event, to create youtube videos that place the blame of Market Garden' failure in Gen Gavin's lap, at Nijmegen. They too claim that XXX corps had caught back up to the time table.
According to the map, Market Garden was a terrible plan. All of the German troops to the North and South of Arnhem would have been trapped there if the bridge was destroyed. Even if the Germans surrendered, there would have been mass causalities on both sides. The Allies would have to had to build a bridge somewhere on the Rhine to cross it like Montgomery wanted in the first place.
Update: On Oct.7 1944 D.Coy. of Calgary Highlander with a Troop of 5 shermans reach the 'Airfield Baulager' where they take 16 POWS with 8x MG42 of Hptm.Wildebrand's MG.Btl.14. Then push on to the left side to avoid the minefield around the airfield. Sgt.T.J.Reed 6.A-T.Platoon Calgary Highlanders KO a Sd.Kfz.135 (Marder I.) in a duel situated in patch of woods at todays Huigenstraat in Hoogerheide (DCM award) , while the shermans push on northbound to de Kooistraat which has a large gap in the minefield. Where they another duel between another German tank takes place which is parked behind a windmill and wrongfully identificatie as a Panther. Sgt.GJ.Eno (Fort Gary Horse) KO the last Sd.Kfz.135 Marder I. of the Pz.Jg.Kp.719. (Military Medal award). Previous at 07:30h , one of these Marders made a counter attack east of the Schapendreef (road of advance) at the Heiloop supported with a remnant Coy. of Kampfgruppe Theuerkauf. All were KIA by a Canadian artillery barrage and only the Marder I. was able to escape via the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Ter Duinenlaan. Earlier on Oct.2 the Battalion of the White Brigade captured the first Marder I. on todays Toekomstlaan at Merksem, Antwerp. Sonderstab Knuth was able to evacute some 90.000 men equipment, artillery pieces and tanks of the 120.000 strong German 15th Army over the Western-Scheldt after the Allies took the City of Antwerp on September 4 1944. The bulk of those troops had to pass the 'Enge von Woensdrecht or Woensdrecht Narrows' on foot and that's why the railwaydam was vital to it's escape from several musterpoints. And then send to endangered frontline sectors between the north of Antwerp and Beringen up along the western side of 'Hell's Highway ' until Veghel. That's why the Germans were able to establish a stadely stream of reinforcements .
The A-T.ditch 'de Zoom' was an ideal defense which didn't need much 'heavies'. One Stug was located north of Villa Nova was located which had a pillbox Gefechtsstand underneath. It moved back and forth at the bend in the road into a fireing position and then pulled back out of harmsway. An 8,8cm Flak of 2./ Fs.E.u.A.Rgt.H.Gö or 2. maybe 4./925 Battery Ackermann was located in a woodpatch opposite of todays crossroads near the midgetgolfbaan. At the gasstove factory 'Beckers' the 2nd mortarteam of 12./FJR.6 was located. North of Halsteren 14./Fs.E.u.A.Rgt.H.Gö with it's 10,5 cm howizers positioned. Those units at the A-T.ditch were retracted to a musterpoint at Halsteren at midnight on 28/29 of Oct.1944. It was planned to evacuated that musterpoint at 03.00h but due to the Canadian advance on Oude-Molen it was delayed one hour. The destuction of the Tholen bridge however went ahead as planned on 03.10h although it was an emergency exit to the north, as there was no direct communication with bridge.
Well done, as always. There is a lot of biased narrative about the western front and such contributions are quite important, I think. Albeit without the noble dutch accent. Why?
5 days prior to Marker-Garden 2 spies gave away Market-Garden to the Germans. One Begian spy told about 'Garden'. Another spy send word about 'Market'. That's why the Germans where able to put their limit amount of troops so effectively. Kampfgruppe Walther was formed immidiately to that intel and all unit moved secretly into their ambush positions. On the 13th a small detachment of Marine Einsatz Kommando 65 or 60 (German equivalent of the British Special Boat Service Commandos made an attempt to destroy the Bridge over Canal from the SS Krause / Segler sector on the right, to buy time before the arrival of Fallschirmjäger Rgt.6 who was still commited in a fight south of the Canal on the left hand side , but failed. The would later ve more succesful at the Waal Bridges at Nijmegen.
The Germans knew that the British would attack towards Eindhoven. They were however oblivious to the scale and scope of the attack.
all glory to the german heroes but market garden was derailed on the first day by the fact that the entire operation was an insane machination by the british idiot montgomery. "a bridge too far" paints an excellent sketch of how barely conscious anyone in the allied chain of command was of the failure points and objectives of the operation.
The Germans knew that something was up. Next year I will make a video about the layered German defense in the Netherlands in September 1944.
Another Monty disaster
Nay-Maygun!
It is hard for the computer voice to pronounce Dutch names properly.
The just erected unit was named Fallschirmjäger Regiment 18
erected ?
The regiment ceased to exist in all but name after Von Hoffmann was named garrison commander of Eindhoven and the unit was basically split up on 17th September.
Remnants of II./FJR.18 'Stephan' were absorded into Fallschirmjäger Rgt.6. 5./FJR.18 as the heavy Coy. of I./FJR.6. 6./FJR 18 as the heavy Coy. of II./FJR.6. 7./FJR.18 as the heavy Coy. of III./FJR.6.
Great video, strong work.
Thank you very much!
On the 8/9 September Finzel reported from Leopoldsburg that his unit of 2 Companies only 40 paras remained. Later his Kampfgruppe absorbed remnants of II./723 Gren.Rgt. Bierenheide
tell us more, please, I really enjoy these sort of organizational analyses
I will make more videos like this. Thanks for the feedback!
Add it to: failure to destroy 2/3 of the africa corps at alamein. 2) failure to take caen on d1 3) failure to close gap at falaise 4) letting the 15th army escape, plus not clearing the scheldte estuary, rendering the port of antwerp useless and 5) arnhem......take your pick
It is quite amazing that he was still promoted to Field Marshall. His first major victory at El Alamein was also his last.
Thank you.

Two Pionier Zugen (2x 25 paras) were assigned to III./FJR.6 to lay a minfield belt on the airfield up to the east opposite of Mattenburg. The 3rd Zug(25 paras) was assigned to 16./FJR.6 'Wiegand' for Special duties. The Pi.Ers.Kp./FJR.6 (some 40+ paras) operated behind the front line and was made up of so called 'Genesenden' who prepped the demolition of bridges, vital building or Church steapels. But they also dug in railway(tram) track at the main Lagers near the access roads for grounding ammo or fuel delivery carts or vehicles. Their porpose was to ensure mobility for FJR.6 and delay possible Allied advance routes in advance enabling a possible sudden retreat from certain sectors for tactical reasons.
Rommel owes so much to his Italian allies. I hate how dirty history has done to the brave Italian soldier!
The Italians in North Africa deserve more credit for sure.
Awesome information my man! Maybe you could help with something if you were in the 6th fallschirmjager and received a iron cross second class when and where would the medal be awarded
Thanks for the feedback!
During a brief pause in combat, at the end of a deployment or campaign. This could also be awarded if someone was WIA or posthumus.
The Germans also ordered the evacuations of villages and towns because they knew very well that the allied bastards most of the times first flattened villages and towns, before the actual attacks, and actually didn't give a damn about civilian casuaties
-- So what happened with the I/6th in battle with us 101st prior to Carentan? All hands lost with 140-50 pow? Cant find hardly find any info, its gets referred to by winters and other subsequent narratives about Catentan but not about the 1/6th engagement. Maybe i missed it, trying to learn more. Thanks, i hope you read this. 👍
Wtf did I just see? Galicia was never part of the Habsburg realm when Budapest was still part of the Ottoman Empire. First the Great Turkish war happened (1683-1699) and Galicia was only part of the Habsburg realms after 1772. Furthermore also Galicia and Silesia was never part of the Habsburg realms in the same time. The map at the start is totally messed up.
Thank you for your feedback. I hope it did prevent you from watching the video.

All these episodes take a lot of research. For now I wish to focus on writing a book on FJR 6.
Fantastic vid
Glad you enjoyed it! Any suggestions for new content is welcome.
I watched the Normandy armor buildup and Tiger tank battalions. Very nicely done. Still need to watch the Ardennes one. Panther tank allocations by unit and month would be interesting. Jadgpanther too would be cool. Perhaps Sicily and Italy German tank strength would be good. Eastern Front was a meat grinder. Sure that would take some time. Good job. Best to you.
These overviews take a huge amount of time of researching and putting the stats together. I will see what I can do for the future.

Errata: 0: 40 The Germans were working on heavy tank prototypes even before the War. This did not begin at the invasion of the USSR. 0:50 The 503 battalion was established in April. 1:12 The diagram shows three platoons per company, but in fact these original battalions had four. You don't explain how companies make up a battalion. You don't state the number of Tigers per battalion. 1:40 You are talking about "the first Tigers" of 1942 but the photo shows a different version of Tiger from 1943. 1:55 The 501 was not sent to "support Rommel's Afrkakorps". It was assigned to Panzer Army 5 to halt Operation Torch. The Afrikakorps were in another country at that time. 2:20 The 500 was formed to support "the Wehrmacht" but also W-SS. 3:20 You don't state the size of platoons in the revised battalion structure.
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for making this video! The language aspect was especially interesting. Two things I would like to add: -Their economic growth in the late 1800s/early 1900s was also hindered by certain attitudes around nationalism, judging by "Economic nationalism and economic integration: the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late nineteenth century". I think that, without this and without Hungary focusing so much on unmechanized agriculture, their economic situation could've been much more comparable to other countries. -"Offensive Spending: Tactics and Procurement in the Habsburg Military, 1866-1918" reveals how Austria's military was both a source of heavy spending in the mid 1800s while also not getting good results. There was a culture of giving out tons of promotions for financial/corrupt/political/nepotic reasons, resulting in an enormous officer class(and not enough NCOs!) who had large pension benefits etc. So an expensive military with bad leaders kept sucking a bunch of money while leading to political crises and huge loans for Austria.
The Austrian army was a country club for the nobility. The problem was that the nobility was corrupted, which was also the case in Russia btw, and was basically living off the land while contributing nothing. Nevertheless the country proved to be remarkably resilient in the face of a world war.

Good video. Nice to see other countries using the legendary Commando skills. The 1st and 29th Rangers were trained and created in Achnacarry Scotland 1942. Direct copies of the Commandos. Then the 2nd and 5th US Rangers subsequently copied these Commando skills and took part in North Africa and D D day.

101st is more famous than the 82nd among civilians, mainly because of the show band of brothers but many civilians don’t know that the 82nd has way more combat jumps than the 101st. And the 82nd is still airborne to this day while the 101st is air assault.
So true! For me the 82nd will always have a special place in my memory due to the gripping memoirs of General Gavin (On to Berlin).
Idee waar die foto op de thumbnail is getrokken?, die van de FJ mortier crew?
Helaas is de oorsprong mij niet bekend.
