GP Ignition interference with Blue Bird Servos Resolved!
Over six months of research, testing, and conversing with Blue Bird Servos and Aviator Plus to isolate and resolve random 51/52 series servos twitching from GP Ignition Interference - We have derived several ways to overcome the adverse effect.
There is a lot of useful information throughout the video!
I'm especially grateful for the help of Joe at Aviator Plus for his extensive knowledge and support during my testing, along with the support from Blue Bird Servos, and several RC buddies that reached out and provided me with more information during the testing process.
I plan to make another video on how to change the spark plug cap resistor.
Notes:
Servos effected were prior to 10-2023 mfgr date and GP Ignitions late 2022- early 2023.
This does not mean that GP ignitions or Blue Bird Servos are bad, just means there was a compatibility issue with these two products and has been resolved by both companies.

Excellent and very valuable information in this video, it was very helpful for me as I had this same problem with my Bluebird H51b V2 servos (9/23) and my GP ignition (2022). At first it was frustrating but thanks to your information and great help I was able to solve my problem on my plane, I decided to go with a brand new updated GP ignition from Joe at aviator plus to correct my issue. After receiving it I replaced the ignition on my plane and everything is working perfectly fine with zero issues. I really appreciate your discovery and your help about this and I hope it helps others a lot with this same issue as it helped me. Keep the good work Nick.
Thanks so much!
I have no idea what the appeal of Bluebird servos is?
@garyhoffman9423 user preference my friend. Mind you, this particular post was a result of an unforeseen change by GP Ignitions at the factory due to the lack of normally used carbon composition resistors available on the market. Normally it wouldn’t have affected anything but just by chance bled noise on the wrong frequency. One thing I wish GP did was add a conductive paint on the module for EMI shielding like the other brands.
Super fun!! :D
💪👍 Which Prop do you have installed on this one?
Either a Falcon CF 25x8W or 25x9, I prefer the 25x9. The 8W was a nice for hovering and created a bit more idle breaking on the steeper approaches that I do. That 25x9 has a nice bite to it.

@@aknickrc Alright 👍 I appreciate your reply, I just got the 25x8w for my new Edge 540 91 with a GP76 Let's see how it performs. All the info of your set up at your videos description is very useful Thank's for taking your time to post and share this with other's. By the way have you take the total weight dry of your 91 ARS before? Thank's again ✌️ Wilmer
A fellow Vista Grande-er, yay. This baby thermals as good as anything I have ever flown. I even lost one into a big thermal as it climbed so quickly and high (maybe 3500 ft by my estimates) that I couldn't see what direction it was flying. Lately, I have even been challenging myself to find thermals via hand launch without using power! Btw, I noticed that Tower Hobbies doesn't stock these anymore; I wonder if they are still being mfg? You certainly can't beat the value and the fun.
It's too bad they discontinued it for sure. Part of the reason I got it was the glowing reviews on RC Groups, price, and I had some light film to recover it with. Made a good project and is quite fun to fly. I'm obsessed with F3K DLG gliders and really enjoy the simplicity of hand launch.
Beautiful place ......love the way she flies , reminds me of our Buzzards ! Best wishes from Wales .😍😍👍👍
looks like my old stomping grounds off i90 heading to snoquaalie pass. IM ordering this plane today. Im torn between this for 319 on sale or the version 2 aj aircraft laser for 374
No i90 here! 😆 I think you’ll be happy with either plane. This skywing laser is pretty spunky which makes it quite fun. The AJ73” laser is the best in its class IMO, I haven’t flown their 60” but it’s always been on my list… I do have a SW67 laser in the box and a SW89 laser… so that should say something about how I like them smile😁
@aknickrc I just got my sw 73 inch slick. I wasn't a big fan of the sw 74 edge. I'm most likely ordering up the aj 60 inch laser z230. The blue v2 is a awesome well built plane.
how heavy are the wheels?
210g for the 4” 272g for the 4.5”
is it hard to find a thermal with alula?
Since it’s designed for slope by nature it won’t signal for lift like a thermal duration glider would. But I’ve caught several non sloping thermals with it… it’s no composite dlg though. The Alula is a great learning platform for dlg and slope. I’d like to always have one in my hanger as it can take a beating and still brings a smile to my face when I fly it in various conditions and locations. It’s one of the good ones!
sucks cant get them anymore want one bad
Yup! Next best thing is a 100”-120” turbobushmaster!
But from what exact point of the muffler do you let the smoke liquid enter? I have the same engine as yours (DLE35ra) that when I turn on the smoke bombs if I have the plane inverted in flight it turns off Thank you
It was near the cylinder exhaust port flanking the exhaust as it left the cylinder but not into it. I was using a mad dog smoke nozzle that fans the smoke fluid. Also I had the power box pump set to my throttle. I actually had better smoke prior to this flight and tuned it a bit rich so it wasn’t atomizing very well and quite messy. If you’re flaming out your engine it’s too close to the port or way to rich of a fluid ingestion. I would recommend preheating the fluid to help it smoke easier.
Awesome place, been there before. Ya need to post a joy2.5m video right quick!!
Yes I do! I have short clips of it, but nothing worth a video yet. Was spending a lot of time fine tuning and setting it up. Winter showed up and the thermals got pretty weak, would have been some boring flights 😆
That thing just flew out of your hand!
Motors will make it do that 😆 lots of power on 4S 🤘🏼
@@aknickrc Ah didnt realize it was a 4s plane!
@@yodecaf it’s quite the rocket ship to altitude! 😃
Excellent airplane. I just picked one up with a DLE 55 in it. A new plane that was not quite completed and had never been flown. What a great flyer. I put carbon fiber landing gear with larger than stock, DuBro pneumatic wheels. I love this plane! Great video, nice flying!
It’s a good plane! Glad you like it too! Be sure to check out my mod video on the timber 😊
@@aknickrc Just checked out the mod video. Nice job! Some good tips there. One thing to be careful of.... The cabin windows become a little more brittle with age. Doesn't take much to put a crack in one. Ask me how I know. lol
I’ve cracked mine as well. 😆
Nice flying..! Do you have link for det ski?
Those are custom made by me. Non-production. I don’t have the resources to make these again unfortunately.
Very nice slope and great video! I would really love to be there with you and fly together!!!
Absolutely! I always dream of going back and flying there again one day!
This is fantastic and worked on my 4" wheels. Can you post a 4.5" version?
Thank you! I’d love to! I don’t have any 4.5” rims to make a set though. I would if someone sent me a set.
What do you put in the smoke pot?
The tanks are two 14oz fuel/smoke side by side. The smoke pump is a power box set up on a spline curve mix. Mad dog smoke nozzle in the muffler by the header inlet. Sullivan smoke fluid.
@@aknickrc But do you usa gasoil for the smoke
Strait up Sullivan Super Dry smoke oil
Randomly appeared on my rec and I was pleasantly surprised with how chill this was. Subbed!

Where did u put your cg at in this plane?
I don’t remember… it’s been so long since I’ve built it! I still have it and it’s still one of my favorite 35cc planes. Maybe I’ll take it down and see where it is then get back to you. You can try and look at giant scale news . Com for my assembly thread, it may be in there too.
Nice spot mate
I knew you’d appreciate that spot 🍻
Great plane but amazing location! I have to get up to Alaska someday.
great spot! nice flying!
Wish I lived there! I can dream… and visit 🤙🏽
Great to see our models in the air and some.of the fantastic locations around the world
The Dammit S really liked this spot! By far the most enjoyable glider I flew there. Penetrated well, very fun. That leading edge dowel made the grass landings less stressful!
Nice mate
Thanks! Added some expo after that flight 😆 what a neat spot - more videos to come when I get time.
Did you have to cut the cowl at all for the spark plug leads?
Nope!
Nice work mate! I fly this bird too, the Libelle also! ♥
Have a libelle showing up this week!
@@aknickrc You're going to love it, its a lil more tender than the Alula, you'll have to be more gentle with it. The dihedral is perfect for thermals, but can cause it to be thrown around in gusting winds while slope soaring. Some people will use a 2nd set of wings with the dihedral angle removed at the glue joint. Happy flying Nick! :D
@@Nous_nous_amusames Maidened the libelle last week! Not a bad little DLG!
Hi AKNick...Location is amazing and carbon cub is superb..! I am waiting for mine to arrives home. I go for an electrical setup with same servos Savox SC-0254MG, could you please share your experience with those servos. Thanks a lot and good flight !!
Thanks for the kind words! I thought the servos worked well for the plane. I attempted a digital servo reverser and that was glitchy. So plug directly into the rx with an individual port. Other than that, I've never had an issue with them.
your other thumb LOL
Hey it was harder than I thought it be! Told Phil - “thought I called myself a 3D pilot!” Hard to coordinate a turn with invisible ailerons! Ha!
Smart!
I have built a Timber and used a lot of your helpful knowledge. Thank you for the video. Just got done installing the tail wheel you designed. Sweet work! I live in anchorage and would like to fly with you sometime. My Timber is running a DA 70 with smoke.
DA70!!! Dang! Thank you for the kind words and glad to hear you appreciate the tail wheel design as well. I'm always looking for a flying buddy and some decent weather. I fly with the Gastineau Aeromodelers Society (GAS) here in Juneau. Flew one summer up in Fairbanks 2007?? at the Midnight Sun RC club.... man do I miss that flying field and a thriving club with events.
Like your colour scheme and design would you share more .
Thanks! It's quite simple, tedious, and will flake off over time. I basically made stencils from packaging paper, striping masking tape, and rattle can paint. You dont want to let the tape or paint sit long or it will take the shine off the foam. Used a very light coat of rattle can paint, followed by two more coats. Some spots I did not use any masking tape and conformed the paper to the skin tight prior to painting. The bottom pattern is 1" masking tape, the top is a mixture of tape over stencils created from free hand and a french curve
I just love the videos of the vast blue skye.
You mean the sky where it's hard to find the plane? At least it's edited LOL
Hey Nick, love the videos! I sent a message I think last spring. I'm in Anchorage, I was wondering if I could possibly pay for a tailwheel? I don't have a printer. If that's something you might be willing to do I could meet or PayPal, Cash App with an address. I have the 8.75's but not the tailwheel, kind of hard to find the PR tail. Cool if not but I had to ask just in case. Thanks bud!
Hey Zach! I should be able to hook you up. I’m not sure how to send you a PM. I have one printed. Quite a bit of fiddling and getting the fork to fit nicely and risk of breaking if you don’t take your time. Then you’ll have to get hardware. I could whistle some stuff up, but since I don’t have bulk hardware for this it can run the material price up. When it’s all said and done you may realize it’s a labor of love. 😂 but the shock cub has a tailwheel assy that may work pretty good too.
I started mine last year but with Covid never finished anything. I’m going electric because that’s what I got. And I appreciate your good ideas
Thanks! Glad I can help! It’s a fun plane!
I have a Timber X. Great airplane. Butterfly landing gear. Where can I get that landing gear. I'm more than willing to tear my landing gear completely off and replace it with what you have. Can you help me. Where can I find it. THANKS.
The sprung landing gear I am using is from the hangar 9 X Cub 60cc and are a drop in fit for the 110”Timber. Stripped, painted, and modified the axels for 8.75” PR Bushwheels. Check out my 110” Timber setup video to get a better idea of what I did to them. 🤘
Where bush flying couldn't be more personally safer and less risky.

Comparison with the ARS300 would be nice
Oh I see the comparison in the description :)
Had a brief comparison with the 91 ARS in the video description when I posted the video. But to embellish on that: The 89 Laser enters tumbles much easier and has a faster roll rate. It’s less stable post stall, and lands quicker The 91 ARS is more stable post stall, lands slower. Slower roll rate, enters tumbles with more thoughtful inputs but doesn’t stay in them as long or as easy as the laser. I’m still getting to know the laser and fine tune my inputs and CG. To be honest I used to not like the ARS but it flies extremely nice and is a very capable 3D plane with the right settings. Eg: dialing down the rudder. It’s my favorite plane to fly for the moment. I’m learning the laser needs less elevator so it doesn’t roll out in tight elevator turns/loops. Each flight it’s getting dialed in more and flying better and better… thus liking it more and more!
@@aknickrc Only have PilotRC flying at the moment, but the V1 Edge 540 91" is being fitted out. I do have an ARS300 91" waiting in the queue. Can't wait to get some Skywing airborne.
Wild indeed, amazing lomcewaks 😂💪🤘
🤣 Thanks!
Thank you
Love the videos of this thing!
Hi, I ordered the same plane in red P-40. I’m wondering about your Booma RC multi switch. Do the XT60 connectors stick out of the black box, and you plug your battery side XT60 to that? Or can you plug your battery directly to the black box part? Is there a double connector basically? The picture on booma RC website is hard to tell. They ask if you want to order a XT60 lead and connector, or if you want to make your own. I have EC3 on everything now, so in that case, I’d go XT60 to EC3 or just buy some 2s lipos with XT60 on them. I hope you understand this marble mouth paragraph I wrote. Haha. Last thing I just thought of, do you know what 2-1 header drop you need for a canister muffler? I’ve heard 60, 60 and 90mm. Wonder what the correct size is. I want to order parts before my airplane is delivered. Thanks a bunch.
BoomaRC has updated the design slightly since my installation. The unit actually has XT30 plug inputs. They are essentially asking what battery connectors you want. As for the drop, I’m not sure since I’m using stock mufflers.
You've got some awesome places to fly up there in Alaska, still flyin a 9 year old float plane is way cool. I bet there's not alot of RC community up there, like AMA events..I can relate. I would like to see your big Timber on floats someday..I really need a big gas stol plane!
Thanks! The RC group here is pretty small indeed in Southeast Alaska. Bigger groups with AMA events in Anchorage and Fairbanks which is a 6hr boat ride and a 20hr drive…. The Timber is a noisy bird, I don’t want to rustle any feathers at my float flying site. The 84” TBM is a perfect float plane though! If the 110” Timber ever dies, I’m probably going to get the 120” TBM.
Excellent video
