Adventure on Flathead Lake
We take our trailer sailer to Montana for some beautiful sailing, camping, and wildlife viewing. One of the most beautiful areas we have been to and the road trip to get there was stunning. Flathead lake is by far the largest natural lake in our area so it was fun to see and explore all around the islands.

Building a custom sun shade
มุมมอง 2.4K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Instead of a boom tent or Bimini top we design and build a custom sun shade for the Ruddy Duck. Using Sunbrella and fiberglass poles we construct a cover that is installed quickly and provides shelter from sun and rain. This is our first prototype and we are exited to give it a full test in all conditions Imaginable in various locations from here on out. nelsonfamilycanvas?igsh=Mj...
Here comes the BOOM!
มุมมอง 1.4K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Does the length of the boom or mainsail foot length matter? We discuss why it matters on the Ruddy Duck and how a boat is balanced by multiple factors. We also test out a shorter boom on the water to see the effects first hand.
A cold overnight trip on Lake Coeur d Alene
มุมมอง 2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
My son and I take our trailerable sailboat to lake Coeur d' Alene for an early winter overnight trip. The temperatures drop but it doesn't stop us from sailing, hiking, and watching a ton of bald eagles.
Why trailer sailors should have Synthetic Rigging
มุมมอง 22K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We discuss the benefits of synthetic rigging on a trailerable sailboat. I show how my rig was made and how to make your own. I'm not a great speaker but I do what I can at the request of viewers to explain my dyneema rigging and show how to make a locked Brummell splice.

Next time you go.. reach out I might could take the c dory as a support vessel 😂
Sorry I missed you! Next time.
Yeah we were thinking of dropping in at Dayton but ran out of time. You have a beautiful place to sail my friend!!!! If you plan a seige next year I may be able to bring a few guys along!
@@ruddyducksailing Wild Horse is scheduled for August 23rd and 24th :) And the first Flathead 40, Dayton to Lakeside and back is July 18th-20th.
You're filling a much-needed gap in the trailer sailing niche as well as openkng my eyes to a widespread potential of what Pacific Northwest sailing can be. I hope to share anchorage with you sometime with one of my trailer sailers located in Oregon City, OR. my 1969 Newport 16 or my 1995 Hunter 23.5.
Thank you! Yeah there is a ton of potential for sailing adventures in our area. Since I’ve started looking satellite imagery and maps for places that would be fun to sail I’ve realized the options are almost endless. The hard/ fun part is figuring out logistics like where to launch, stay, local laws etc. I’ll be heading to Oregon at some point so maybe I’ll see you around!
Great video Brian… such great storytelling
Thanks Jeff I appreciate that!! Are there any more sailboats in your future?
@@ruddyducksailing ... Who knows, I just bought a c dory 22 , to a large extent because like you mentioned in your video I wanted to explore more places.
Awesome!! Cool boat.
LOVE IT !!! And I did install a tiller AUTO PILOT on my boat. WONDERFUL !! then I could go below for a few minutes and make a sandwich or what ever. WORKED GREAT!!
That is awesome! I may have to install one someday.
I have been watching your videos.. MAKES ME so home sick for Bonner county when I had my 27ft retractable sloop on Pend Oreille. BEFORE I went blue water. I had 4 acres and lived on the Cocolalla lake rd. In MY fatasies to move back to the North west and NEAR Flathead lake. In Florida now and NO boat !!
Oh man it might be a good time to pick up a little trailer sailer!! They are so simple, inexpensive and fun and we have really enjoyed the time on ours. We never made it to blue water but definitely downsized from what we started on. Anyways I agree and think it would be awesome to live near Flathead lake as it’s not overcrowded yet and has so much potential for outdoor activities! Thanks for watching!!
Mate amazing shots, for real. Which cam are you using?
Thank you!! I mainly use my iPhone 14 pro. It has insane quality for its size and is simple allowing me to film more and fidget less. I also use a go pro hero 9 and a mavic mini drone. I also have external mics and gimbals for the phone that help out with certain shots. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ruddyducksailing thank u!
It was worth the wait for this video. Sort of. Your videos are really a first class addiction for sailors of modest means and a yearning to explore. Every one of your videos awakens that yen to go sailing, camping, sight seeing, and the occasional boat full of Kokanee. Concluding each video finds every viewer anxiously waiting your next one. How about say, 3 new releases per week like Matt's Offroad Recovery? A Ruddy Duck fix is absolutely a must-have for sailors stuck in the Pacific Northwest in the summertime. Thank you!
Thank you so much and oh man trust me I wanted to do a trip sooner than this . I’ve been crazy busy lately running my business and keeping a marina afloat ( literally lol) plus farming and just life. Im trying to find a balance to where I can film more but that means I have to work less and hopefully in the future this is feasible. Filming and editing takes so much time but it’s so worth it because of the experience and the awesome community of people like you!!! Having positive comments like yours makes my day! I hope to get to a episode every week as soon as i figure out how to supplement my income but until then thank you for watching!!!!!!🙂
Great channel. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Another excellent video! Thanks for taking us along on your adventure! Your content keeps getting better and better! God bless you and your family ❤.
Thank you so much!! It’s our pleasure. God bless!
Wow. I just purchased a 16' trailer sailor with the intention of sailing the inland lakes of US, which I have wanted to for quite awhile. This looks beautiful. Already making a list..as I'm used to the Great Lakes & East Coast. Any suggestions for a book/forum/? Texas 200 is also on my list for fun, although I prefer wilderness. Thank you & Be well.
Awesome! We have had so much fun exploring in our little sailboat and hope you will as well. We have started by exploring the lakes closest to us and are slowly branching out. I don’t know of any books or forums but I’m sure there are some good ones out there. Thanks for watching and fair winds!!!
What an amazingly massive and beautiful country you live in! Another brilliant vid, cheers
It really is massive and has such a beautiful variety in geography. Too much for me to explore in one lifetime. Thanks for watching!!
Another great Episode. You have a good eye for framing; the footage is excellent.
Thank you! It’s been fun trying share all aspects of our travels and do justice to the beauty around us! Definitely a challenge
Lovelly
Thanks 😊
Another superb video! Great photage as always, excellent quality video, and our narrations are very good on all your videos! Thanks for actually taking us along, or about as close as you can get here on this adventure! Greatly enjoyed this
Glad you enjoyed it! It brings me great joy to share the adventures we are blessed with and love to show the beauty in the world around us as I see it. Thanks again!!!
This is so cool to see, as I really enjoy your channel and I actually live in northwestern montana! It's so awesome seeing you guys explore places I've seen as well. When you live in montana it feels like our state barely gets any recognition. ive heard weather can get pretty nasty pretty fast out on flathead though... 😬
Awesome! Thank you! You definitely have some beautiful lakes to explore over there. We spotted a few on the way over that we might want to go back to check out! And yeah I believe Flathead could get really rough fast. Small boat’s definitely need to be careful
Really great video. We all watched and my kids got pumped for our next adventure!!
I’m excited to sail and adventure with you guys again! You’re family is awesome!
Well put together vid. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, best yet!
Glad to hear it! Thank you.
Amazing
Thanks. It’s a beautiful world
Great video! We were up there a month ago but couldn"t find and info on where to launch or leave the rig so took the trailer stayed at that same campground and kayaked to the island from Dayton ( it was a little rough) Now we know we can leave the rig at that campground for a price and stay at the island.P.S. your camera work is topnotch
Thank you!! Yeah it’s always interesting finding public access. Luckily flathead has 4 state parks and all have boat ramps so those are options for a fee. There’s supposed to be free parking in Dayton but I was unable to verify.
Another Fantastic Adventure thanks for bringing us along.... Truly amazing country!!!! Hot springs looked like a fun time as well!!!!
My pleasure to share the beauty we were blessed with on our adventure. The springs definitely were relaxing and helped loosen some stiff joints.
Beautiful country and awesome video.
It really is. Thank you
5.2 knots upwind, I guess that new jib pulls good.
I was surprised! A reef in the main and 90% jib and still over hull speed. Flying
@@ruddyducksailing yeah a reef....see, when I first subscribed, I really thought the duck was a fractional with a back-stay. they don't put in reefs, they just tension the back-stay to de-power ... I was just trying to warn people with aluminum masted fractionals, ( with back stays ) because it always happens on tired Dacron.
@@ruddyducksailing but surfing on a beat means your rig rocks, for sure.
250 miles one way? ... could hardly do that one justice in a weekend.
Yeah it’s a long drive but so beautiful so it didn’t seem bad. Our trip was 6 days and we were definitely tired by the end but so worth it!
@@ruddyducksailing the hot springs and nice restaurant was a nice wrap up for the drive home i bet .... such an amazing landscape and wildlife.
Excellent splicing demo
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
The terminal you are using at the mast end, does it have a tang/plate on both sides?
Yes I have a tang on both sides of the mast with a through bolt holding both tangs on
@@ruddyducksailing thanks for the response. I think I worded my question wrong. Where the colligo attaches to the mast, is there a forked tang on either side of the colligo terminations?
Yes. You can see this at 4:14 on the video. I used split / forked tangs up top because the mast was already set up like this. If your boat has single tangs then you could use a forked colligo terminal at the top of your shrouds as long as there is enough clearance between the mast and terminal
Did you consider 1/8th" AmSteel Blue? Why not?
I did consider 1/8” because it’s definitely strong enough but I thought the 3/16 would fit better around the terminals and low friction rings. I did use 1/8 for the lashings and it worked great
Great video! I'm getting ready to rig my Welsford Navigator. What size of low friction rings did you use?
Thanks!! I used antal 10x7 rings
Love your Channel guys! Wish we had more US built boats down here... ⚓👍
Thank you and likewise!! You have made such great improvements to the compac 16 and look forward to seeing where you guys go in the future! Subscribed.
Great footage. Thank you for sharing
Thank you!
I own a Newport 16 made by Award Boats in 1976 and the drop down keel leaks was wondering if your also leaks
Yes mine leaks but only in waves and it floods the cockpit. My boat has the keel pivot pin exposed on a bracket on the cockpit floor. I do not get a drop of water in the cabin and any water that comes in the cockpit self drains. I’m curious if yours is set up the same?
@@ruddyducksailing Mine has the pivot keel with a boat trailer wench to raise and lower. there's water coming thru the hole where the cable is. also inside the cabin there's a screw in cap just inside the entryway I took the cap off and found water in there I'm not sure how water is getting into this space but I'm thinking its the swing keel. I've been sailing it like this since 2003 when I bought the boat.
Oh so that's how you pronounce that lake? 😊. From Rhode Island here 😀 I have a Cape Dory Typhoon so I love small boat cruising.
Yeah the lake was named by French explorers way back in the 1800s I think and the spelling is super weird. Cape dory typhoons are beautiful boats!! Fair winds 😊
How do you like the potter now that you have had it on a few trips? Thinking about getting a trailer sailor and wonder what you would recommend.
The potter is a lot of fun and really shines on small waters or where ease of use is desired. It’s so simple and reasonably stable and is a great little boat. I like it as a singlehanded adventure sailboat. The downside is that it is tiny and can barely sleep two adults and is slower than most boats due to the short rig. Something in the 17-22 foot range would be better for sailing with friends and family
Very nice which part of the US is this thanks.
Inland Northwest. Idaho
I saw the frictionless rings system on a Beneteau at a boat show and thought about using it on my Seaward 25 instead of the track and cars. Less stuff to stub a toe on and endless adjustment options. Appreciate the video.
I’m still enjoying my system. It is fun to make micro adjustments as wind direction and speed changes . The only downside I’ve heard of from others is the potential of a ring flogging and hitting the cabin sides so you’ll want to keep that in mind. It doesn’t happen on my boat because the ring is behind the cabin top but probably not possible for all boats
Great Video! Hello from Victoria BC Canada.
Hey, thanks! I hope to see Victoria someday accessed from a boat. Looks like a beautiful city
I've tried a similar system. The obvious problem surfaced at the first tack on a windy day: As you release the active sheet the genoa is flailing around the clew swings the sheet and the "low friction" ring starts flailing around violently potentially hitting stuff, breaking port lights or hurting people. It put a pretty nice gouge in my cabin house gelcoat. It may work on a small boat but it's a hazard on a larger boat. BTW, under significant loads like the sheet on a 155 racing genoa on a 36 footer, the "low friction" ring becomes exponentially "high friction".
I was worried about the same thing happening on my small boat with the ring flogging around but fortunately the location of our system is behind the cabin and it has never been an issue. On a larger boat where the ring would be beside the cabin the outside control line would have to keep the ring from hitting the windows possibly making the sheeting angle too far out. In that case a track would definitely be a better option. I race with a buddy on a Baltic 35 and I would say that Genoa tracks are a better option on a boat like that!!!
@@ruddyducksailing Yeah, I sail a 36ft C&C 34/36
Are those your kids in the WWP?
Yeah my daughter and a family friend
Cool channel, always loved the adventure of being on small sailboats!
Thanks. We’re pretty new to the adventures but are loving it!!!
Great videos! Would a MacGregor 22 swing keel work for sailing there?
Thanks. Yes a Mac 22 would be just fine. The thoroughfare has some sunken logs and shallow areas so watch out for those and you’ll be ok.
I love to hear the wind and water, too.
It’s mesmerizing.
Please tell me about your boat.
The boat is a 1970 Newport 16 that I have been slowly restoring piece by piece. It has been a great vessel and has taken us on some great adventures
I love your videography. It's lovely to see the big and the small of things, the close-up and the long distance perspective you capture. Unable to get out anymore. So, thank you for taking me where I'd love to go! I love sailing, so seeing the lines, the rigging, the "tiller clutch"-great idea, makes it seem that I'm on board. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I am happy that you felt like you were on board as I love to share my experiences in that way. It’s an amazing world we live in. Thanks for watching!!!
Awesome. I just purchased a Luger 16 Seabreeze (I know, not pretty lines, but, meh) for exactly this type of adventure, small inland lakes. Love the Monty reference! Oh and if a sailor hasn't been towed, then he/she hasn't run aground unintentionally either, lol. You have another subscriber for sure. Well done.
Congratulations on your new purchase! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if the vessel gets you on the water for some adventures then it is the perfect boat!! Crazy you mention running around because I almost did yesterday lol. Ran out of fuel right at the dock but a paddle boarder helped keep me off the beach while I refueled. Thanks for Subscribing!!!!!
Nice trip great views
Yes it is a beautiful place! Thanks for watching
Nice boats. Are you able to add balast if it gets windy?
There are no provisions for water ballast so there is no way to add weight while underway. They are very stable boats however and now that I’ve had time to sail more I feel confident up to 20 knots with a reef in the main.
What load are those low friction rings rated for? Enough for a 35'+ boat?
I have the smallest ones they make and they are rated for a safe working load of 800 lbs . I used antal low friction rings and they make a huge variety of sizes up to 22,000 lbs safe working load so they will definitely have rings that will work for your boat!!
Great job with filming...
Thank you!
What a great adventure friends- I am about to own my second WWP 15. The first was an early 60’s lug rig. Many Pacific adventures out of Santa Cruz, Ca. I raised my kids on boats - from a San Juan 21, a Columbia 36, and a 43 Horstman trimaran- raising kids on boat is a good thing.
Thanks, we are definitely blessed to live this lifestyle on the water. Being on and around sailboats has brought us many adventures and has taught us a lot. Enjoy your wwp15 !!!!
