Cirrus SR22 G7 - Icy IFR Approach
Michigan winters can certainly make flying a bit more challenging. On this trip, Mia (my daughter) and I head to Traverse City on Christmas Eve. We encountered moderate icing, as was reported. I also took a moment to show my preflight routine OUTSIDE the plane. I’m always open to feedback-comments are welcome and encouraged!!
As always, please remember that this video is not instructional, and I’m not a certified flight instructor (CFI). A significant amount of content has been edited out for brevity. I do my best to follow all checklists and safety protocols.
Thank you for watching!

    So in your thumbnail there's a lot of ice on the wing. Where does this happen in the video? That's a bit clickbaity and somewhat deceptive. I was hoping to see how you dealt with that ice. Was it during the preflight and you simply needed to use some de-icing fluid?

    • @flying_scott
      @flying_scott วันที่ผ่านมา

      That ice is what accumulated on the wing tips on the descent where there is not anti-ice fluid flowing.

    @35:45 I can't see your screens super clearly, and didn't see your briefing/ setup, but it looks like FEPEX is an "at or above" altitude on the GTN. So, it's calculating a Vpath to a different fix... maybe BEAAR at 3k? If you'd have changed that to an "at" then it would have anchored the Vpath to cross FEPEX *at* 3600, like you were expecting. Also worth noting, You can specify/ change things like degrees down, or vertical speed down to set the decent angle/ rate it should calculate... I'd HIGLY recommend spending some time in a sim (with an experienced CFII) to learn the intricacies... figuring out how an autopilot works, especially in the soup is... less than desirable. ;-) MC, Manhattan Flight Club, NYC

    Here's an observation from being a 121 checkairman and old school CFI. I would have busted the chops of a pilot for not keeping their hands and feet on the controls during an approach. No airline pilot I've seen flies an approach with hands in their lap. Not only does the book tell us too, but when the AP kicks off, and they do, the pilot *already* knows what the AP's control inputs are/were, and what the AP was trying to do or not. Also, especially in icing (which changes the aerodynamics of every airfoil regardless of how capable the FIKI systems is) the feedback from the controls will tell the pilot instinctively if the AP is or is not flying "normally" as compared to a clean airplane. Quick story. Was in the 767 sim for recurrent, FO is flying this half. Every takeoff, as soon as the wheels were off the ground, he'd aggressively take his feet off of the rudders with a loud thud lol. On the 4th takeoff, the instructor failed an engine 1 second after that thud. High power, low speed, high AOA...there was a fight to keep the jet upright for a good 10 seconds and it blew his concentration until we landed. We all had a laugh, and the point was taken. If you've made it this far, I enjoy your humility and attention to detail. Self debriefs are great! Keep up the great work! I'd put my family on your plane. Sub'd.

    Hi Scott, Here’s what I think happened with your VNAV. Looking at the approach plate, it looks like the altitude constraints were set up to get you to 3000 at BEAAR. AS such, the system calculates a constant descent to get you at 3000 not before BEAAR with the additional constraint that you place on it to not descend below 3600. The system crossed FEPAX above the constrained altitude as it was on a descent to get to 3000 not before BEAAR with If you had all the correct VNAV restraints in your flight plan, you could have selected 2600 for your bugged altitude and the system would do the restraints down to RIFKI, where you would pick up the GS. Hope that sheds some light on it.

      Ahhhhh…. Now that makes the most sense of the feedback I have received. Because all the points were loaded and all of them were at or above altitudes. Thank you!

    • @mrscorpio4444
      @mrscorpio4444 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’re very welcome. As far as I could see, your VNAV was working perfectly, and if you look at the point where you went to VS mode, you can see that your vertical deviation indicator was at dead center. However , I think you did the exact right thing, which was to downgrade your automation mode. Whenever the automation is not doing what you want or expect, downgrading or disconnecting is the correct answer. I’m a big fan of downgrade. So if you are in NAV and it starts turning somewhere you didn’t expect, you just go to HDG. If you are in VNAV, you downgrade to VS or ALT. That way you still have the help of the automation, and you take control back until you can figure out how to get the system back on track if needed. Well done!

    I’m just a flight sim pilot so take this w a grain of salt but in flight sim you can do what I call VNAV intervention and make it descend earlier than the calculated TOD in general in flight sim I find VNAV is best if u start it about 10nm before its TOD it often over shoots by about that much but that’s flight sim your mileage may vary. There should be an option on your legs page under VNAV when enabled you can hit direct VNAV decent now and it will show u the estimated VS it’s gonna do on its way down. You may know this but u can edit VNAV altitudes and set your own on any fix in your flight plan.

    Another great video! I asked the same question? On the vnav but realized it will capture the approach also most people that comment on the ice are probably from a warmer climate pilots don’t have much experience in icing conditions a few things 1. Air met for icing in the upper Midwest is almost every other day 2. Good pilots know there outs either up or down or 180 3. Experience mid west pilots know when turn to on the tks and what level of tks to use 4. Fiki stands for Flight into Known icing Thx again Scott for a great video 😊

    It's called a pilot' glory. Your plane needs to be between the source of light (i e., the sun) and the water droplets that will back-scatter the light from the sun. Your plane is casting a shadow that will be in between circles of light. The size of the circles depends on the size of the droplets and their distribution that vary upon atmospheric conditions. Besides the beauty of this optical phenomenon, this tells you that you are in the presence of moisture, and therefore, depending on the OAT, you should watch out for catching ice.

      As a Ham Radio user the skip bounce is correct. Water, when dense enough, is a big reflector.

      Very depressing game last night, did not expect that. But you turn the ball over that many times, hard to win.
