Fly Tying: Chubby Chernobyl Ant
The Chubby Chernobyl is one of those flies that only needs an introduction to those who haven’t fished it. Quite versatile, and effective it is a staple in the fly box of most people that I know. Below is a list of materials used to tie the fly in the video
Materials List:
Hook - Dai Riki #700 (size 6 4xl streamer hook, try Umpqua U-series in the same size)
Thread - Purple 140 Denier Danville Waxed
Tail - Pearl Crystal Flash
Dubbing - Purple Ice Dub
Body - 3mm Black Foam
Foam cutters - River Road Creations Chernobyl Style (tapered-end) Medium
Adhesive - Fly Tyers Zement
Legs - Blue Barred Crazy Legs Deep Purple/Blue
Wings - White Mcflylon
Special thanks to Jon Crossley for filming many of the clips in these videos and for all of the fishing adventures we’ve been on. And special thinks to Kirk Ward for all of the things he’s taught me and for his excellent rowing to help us land some nice fish like the one at the beginning of this video.

Fly Tying: Improved Latex Caddis
This is a variation on the "quick and easy caddis" I like to fish. It adds a few more steps but is still substantially simply to tie. The materials I used to tie this fly are as follows: Materials List: Hook: Hends BL 554 Size: 16 Bead: 2.5mm gold Lead: .015 lead wire Thread: Veevus 14/0 Black Ribbing: Danville Monofilament Body: Kiley's Nymph Skin Collar: Black Australian Opossum and Black CDC...
Fly Tying: BWO Biot Emerger
This is a basic emerger pattern that I like to use for all different mayflies. Changing the colors and sizes allows you match almost any mayfly hatch. I even like to tie these to imitate drakes. Materials used in this video: Hook: Dai-Riki #125 Size: 14 Thread: Danville flymaster plus 70 denier olive Tail: Blue Ribbon Flies Micro Z-lon (Mayfly Brown) Abdomen: Turkey Biot BWO Wing: Poly Yarn med...
Fly Tying: Mega Prince
The mega prince is another great winter pattern and it does exceptionally well in the early spring as well. I really like to fish it when water is high just after runoff, it has just enough flash to catch fish's attention in murky water, but also is extremely heavy and sink fast if needed. Materials I used in the video: Hook: Dia Riki#270 ( Size #8) Bead: Hareline Cyclops Brass Bead (Copper 5/3...
Fly Tying: Zebra Midge
The zebra midge is a very simple fly to tie, I often find that fly tyers overlook this fly as it isn't as "sexy" as other chironomid patterns, though it really can fish quite well. Materials I used to tie this fly: Hook: Emerger size 16 (scuds work just fine) Bead: 5/16" gold Thread: UTC Olive 70 Denier Wire: UTC Gold (Small)
Fly Tying: Hot wire Prince
I fell in love with the Hot Wire Prince a few years back on a fishing trip where my friends and I did an awful hike into a remote river. I was catching the lease amount of fish and I didn't have anything close to what my friends were fishing so I tied on a hot wire prince, it ended up saving the day and since then I've played around with the colors and had lots of success with it. Materials I u...
Fly Tying: Copper John

The copper John is an extremely versatile pattern. You can tie it in a myriad of colors simply by changing out the color of wire. My favorites are Copper, Amber, Purple, Chartreuse, Red, and Brown. Though there are many more colors that I'm sure work. Materials used in the video: Hook: size 14 2XL Nymph Hook Bead: 2.4mm Tungsten Gold (Yes I really like this fly heavy) Lead: .015 Lead wire Threa...
Fly Tying: Diamond Dub Scud
This is a fly I have been working on for a while now. I have had the pattern almost ironed out for over a year now, but I have been searching for a dubbing that really compliments the fly. I had been resorting to blending dubbings together but the flies were still missing something. I tied one with the diamond dub, and went out to test it. The fish loved it, so I tried it an various other color...
Fly Tying: X Caddis
The X Caddis was developed by Craig Mathews from West Yellowstone. It was developed for fishing such rivers as the Madison, the Yellowstone, and the Firehole. Turns out it works pretty much anywhere and matching the colors of the dubbing and the shuck to your local waters can turn this fantastic fly into a trout slayer. This particular color scheme has worked great for me but experiment and fin...
Fly tying: Parachute Adams Variation
The Parachute style of flies is a slight twist on the traditional mayfly dry fly. It works especially well due to the low profile on the water, giving a very real presentation to the fish. The Parachute Adams is an old pattern but it works very well as an attractor pattern, and on rivers with relatively low fishing pressure it can be used to imitate a variety of insects which can save your butt...
Fly Tying: Junkyard Dog
The junkyard dog is one of my favorite streamer patterns, it is really fun to tie and is very effective to fish. I have a medium-fast action 5 wt and it can throw this fly with no problems even with the added weight which makes it a versatile fly as well. If you'd like to see the original, here is a link to Mike's blog: anglerschoiceflies.blogspot.com/2013/04/acf-step-by-step-junk-yard-dog.html...
Simple yet Realistic Egg Sucking Leech
This is a small egg sucking leech has everything that fish like. A realistic looking egg, flash, and great movement in the water. I've had great success with this simple but effective pattern and just wanted to share it with everyone. I typically fish this below a heavy fly and let it swing around in the current behind it, but I've also caught fish with it solo below an indicator with weight to...
Fly Tying: Peacock & Partridge
The Peacock and Partridge is an extremely old pattern, yet the fish don't seem to like the classics, and this fly is no exception. It can be fished in all water columns but seems to do especially well in upper water columns during a hatch when fish are keyed in on emergers. I like to fish it about 18 inches below a dry fly in these circumstances. Swining it up from the bottom while nymph can al...

The Pat's Rubber Leg is my go to nymph. It fishes great year round. I have tied thousands of these commercially and learned a few tricks along the way. I wanted to share these tricks and I hope you like them. Fly Tying: Hare's Ear Nymph Variation
A classic pattern, the hare's ear nymph is known for fooling fish for generations. Usually one of the first flies learned by new tiers, don't think for a minute that the hare's ear can't perform as well as more sophisticated flies. It can be tied weighted or unweighted to mimic different stages of life, in this case I will be tying it weighted. Materials used: Hook: Standard Nymph Lead: .015 Le...
