Bobby Darin: The Ultimate Listener's Guide (book preview)
มุมมอง 522 หลายเดือนก่อน
"A fascinating overview of an intriguing performer" (Record Collector magazine, March 2024) During a career of seventeen years, cut short at the age of thirty-seven, Bobby Darin did it all. He recorded hundreds of songs ranging from jazz and swing through to folk, country, rock 'n' roll, and virtually everything in between; was a composer of dozens of songs and film scores; played piano, guitar...
The Festival of Light Classical Music, disc 1: Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Strauss, Smetana, Wagner
มุมมอง 523 หลายเดือนก่อน
In 1960, Readers Digest released one of the greatest of all boxed sets - a 12 disc compendium of "light classical music." The repertoire avoided symphonies and concertos, concentrating on overtures, waltzes, rhapsodies, suite, symphonic poems etc. It's interesting how, in the 64 years since this as released, how many of these pieces now are no longer played very often in concerts. This is the f...

Bobby was in a class by himself and had his own brand of excellence! Not many could touch him then, and none, absolutely none can touch him today! He puts today's singers to shame! He could swing hard to! I miss Bobby, wish he was here today to show everybody how its done!

Fascinating fashion aside: In the first scene of this, Crawford is wearing a dress which is very similar to the one that she wore in 1932's "Letty Lynton", and which sparked an avalanche of copycat designs. I guess having it worn in a talkie made a greater impact on movie-goers.

Thank you for uploading this fun Clara Bow film. Never viewed the "Madcap Heiress" narrative before...Love the Appropriate 20s Jazz score, recognized some of the pieces being a Early Jazz fan. Thanks for keeping Bow's legend alive, though I doubt it will ever die because of the thousands of Iconic Images and the efforts of film historians to find and restore her films. Just last year, a long lost Two-reeler comedy short, The Pill Pounder (1923) was rediscovered, restored and screen at the San Francisco Silent Film Fest. A shame, that Clara's Five Time co-star Donald Keith's reputation hasnt been exalted with her. It seems that they were made a "Team" and he even looks a bit like future husband Rex Bell.

Boy, that took a dark turn in the last act! Ben Lyon was married to two silent stars - Bebe Daniels for about 40 years, then after her death Marian Nixon. Vidor of course went on to make two of the greatest films of the silent era - THE BIG PARADE (1925) and THE CROWD (1928), the latter which also explores the darker side of married life.

Wonderful film! Bassermann was an incredibly good actor and Max Mack was a really insightful director and the rest of the actors (specially Hani Weisse, in a very moving character) with only maybe a little down in the second part. Sadly there seems the only copies we can see have a really blurry low ressolution (maybe froma 9,5mm copy, or even less mm) that don't allow enjoy the great job of the actors and the exquiside light (one can glimpse the exquisite detail of the light coming from the fireplace, as well as the light coming from real sources, such as the table lamp, typical of the best productions of the time, yes, but here everything looks so bad that film illiterates won't notice and appreciate it), with the frame cut from the edges, a too fast speed (I watched it at 0,75% and all the perfomances miraculously become natural, as usual). An important beautiful film

‘MARE NOSTRUM’ (a poem {of the film}) Pillows and poufs in a giant net like a merchant ship. The streets of Venice and Spain. Piano trills and pain. Better to be bold than clever. Lessons learned forgotten never. Black silk cape and walking cane. Serpents hide but need no disguise. Neptune is dead, gone with the tide. Passion and brains in the belly of a man, in the belly of a ship. Life goes on for lovers. Oh love, ever present. Bristling, blind and calming love. With morning’s first grey light a boy child writes. A mother cries and a world still fights. Good good wine and movie tears. The captain goes and has no fears. Evil waits. It always does. Three bows for Evil. Two nods for Evil. One look for Evil. Submarines. Killing machines. Subhuman dreams. The eagles have landed and the vultures have flown. Goodbye California. Goodbye Barcelona. God can't save the women and children. Every night a deadly scene for every sight, a sight unseen. There are no nets in notes that hold the hate for those that you call bold. Love returns to burn the ends of ropes, but ropes you can not mend. Passion stays and joins the greys with guns and love and poor dead sons. Lazarus has bad habits too. At dawn the blonde must bid adieu. With blackened cape and lovely nape. The Sun! The son. The end begun. Notes to net the nape of one. The bullet blackened caper done. Talent wasted. This is war. Sunken ships; Men overboard, and waves still crash on rocks. C. Wyatt Scott
