VFD’s Nuts! #Hvac #vfd
Ever wondered how Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) control motor speed? In this video, we break down the basics of VFDs, also known as Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs), Adjustable Frequency Drives (AFDs), Inverter Drives, and Variable Speed Drives (VSDs). Learn how VFDs convert AC to DC, smooth the voltage with a DC bus, and use IGBTs to create a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal that simulates an AC sine wave. We’ll also cover practical tips for measuring DC bus voltage and common troubleshooting issues. Perfect for technicians looking to demystify VFDs and improve their HVAC skills!

Key Topics Covered:
What is a VFD?
How VFDs work: AC to DC conversion, DC bus, and IGBTs
Understanding PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)
Measuring DC bus voltage
Common VFD applications and troubleshooting tips

Спасибо тебе за прекрасное видео. Это очень поможет многим людям. Ты очень хорошо и доступно тут всё объяснил. Ещё раз благодарю. Браво 👏
I need to study with you online. Is that possible. Can you send me your email adress?
It seems the supply duct from FCU is not insulated.
This was very interesting. The thing that always makes me a bit nervous about dealing with them are the thousands of potential settings involved in programming them. We work mostly with carrier and therefore ABB drives, I really need to understand the fundamentals of them better too, but understanding the internal settings of how the relays and input terminals interact would be huge. Do you have any other resources or longer form videos on VFDs?
Thanks for watching. This was a repurposed TikTok video I posted. I will be making a more in-depth one for you tube in the future. But for now, if you look up “Engineering mindset” TH-cam channel, he has a lot of great videos on on VFDs. Also “RealPars” TH-cam channel.
thanks
Your welcome! Thanks for watching
Good vid
Thank you
A journeyman taught me this, "never EVER jam and twist solid gauge" I always pre twist, never had a loose wire issue.
Perblam E2 model SERVICE FIRST 1577Trane Rooftop
Top man!
Thank you ✌🏼
Zip tie will fix that 😅
Mr Fat Cheeto needs to get one 😂
You look like if Eminem and Mark Wahlberg had a child
That’s a first. I usually get people saying Ryan Reynolds. I don’t see it tho. 😂
Works for cars too to pin point where the sound in question is coming from (top end, bottom end, left/right bank, etc.)
Kinda random but I used to work with someone like this I worked as a car detailer and this person would purposely clog our vacuums to cause problems so weird and childish
SKIBIDI dadd
I mean, it aint the worst they could've done, its better than nothing lmao
In some cases, smaller P-trap is better than no trap. True. We have a lot of humidity issues in this building. That’s why I’m replacing it. And I’m just messing around.
The Queen of Melrose 👸
Where are they from a TV show?
Oh my ! It's going to cause so many problems.
Im tryina be like u mah boi
Not all heroes wear capes.
We’ve all been there. They must be lonely people, and then we turn into their therapist.😂
Cool
Thanks! This helped
Your welcome! That’s for watching.
I thought the condensation line was closed.
It was closed all right. closed by a natural gas pipe
Is why I've always said plumbing is not really a trade
I know they just play with poop every day😂
That is insane
Crazy right. This customer really lucked out that they didn’t open up the valve when they were finished.
Is that gas piped into the condensate drain ?
That is correct
Did you spot it??
Man these are awesome
No your awesome! #OhYeah
Ah hahahaha man this was awesome
100%True story.
Poor mouse. He was "dying" of thirst!
I was confused at fist but it started making sense. DC always needs a ground unlike AC voltage right?
Both AC and DDC need a ground or a neutral to complete the circuit so the electricity can flow. When it comes to DC voltage if you power a device from a separate transformer other than the transformer that is creating the DC bolt signal you need to common both transformers. Splice both of the transformers together for the device to have power and control signal if that makes sense.
@@professorbutlerhvac1054 thanks!
I find this pre twist bs topic tends to set off a few techsin my career. I always pre twist but never over do it to the point that the copper breaks off. Smaller gauge wire especially.
Dude. What was your reaction to the guy doing that?? I would be furious.
I had something similar but i facetimed by step dad and diagnosed a bad ECM fan motor instead of a rat.
This was from halfway across the country
Dude the hvac senior that never eats anything or just gas station snacks and drinks coffee is so real. These days energy drinks replaced coffee.
Damn i just found the zoomer attention span friendly hvac youtuber! On top of that his vids are actually educational and not full of bs "hacks". subed! 🤣
Fuse puller? Everyone ive seen uses pliers
So a few years later you went and fixed what you messed up. You knew the plastic got away from you. So why didnt you go get it a few years ago
The end is hilarious 😂😂
Hahaha 😂
True story.
Hahaha 😂
Lost me at vfe
Aww poor mouse 💀
Aww poor mouse🫡
Aww poor mouse 💀
...where did he think it went? He was cool just shooting plastic outside? What a piece of garbage
Once it left his fingers, he never thought about it again. It went to the magical land of plastic.
@@professorbutlerhvac1054 I've been certifying hoods for the last 15 years and it is wild what some of these lab technicians will do
One of my last jobs was a school. Big coolermaster units throughout the whole building. I put one up gave the fan a spin before I put the last piece of ductwork on it. Fan was bent in housing and rubbing on inside of unit. Told the guy running the hvac. He said don’t worry about it we’ll get to it, we never did.
That’s a design flaw no?
I think it was a flaw in the factory with the install. The wires were a little too long so they were causing them to push into each other. I think the terminals are a little too close to begin with for such high voltage.
The immeasurable value of taking care of your servicepeople and keeping them around for as long as they're willing to stay. If this facility chose to chase the lowest price, they likely would have wasted thousands of dollars chasing the problem.
You should come to our medical facility I'm in the IT department and our entire department AC doesn't work. Our offices are usually 80° to 90° everyday there's air flow but very little and it's not cold. It's been going on for 4 years and the landlords refused to take care of it and maintenance keeps closing our tickets to fix it
