The Hermitage Dunkeld. Scotland. A tour through this Ancient Woodland
When I was 21 in the early 90’s, I went in search of the Shores of Loch Shiel. My 1st time driving to the North. I went searching for that Castle. It wasn’t til Years later, I discovered Eilean Donan Castle driving to The Isle of Skye. Before Internet, Web Sites, were the norm. When I seen it…. WOW! I had a “Highlander” Poster up on my bedroom wall for years.
Hello Mackie. Thanks for making and sharing with us all this voyage through space and in a way time also. Would you believe I was only a kid from a small town in the south of italy when watching the movie, and it was the movie that planted the seed of moving to Scotland in my brain? I finally moved to scotland back in 1999 and one of the first things I did was to scout for all the locations where they shot the movie was shot and I have managed to fiond most of them. My question would be if you chould actually share the coordinates of all the locations, if you have them? Many thanks!
This vlog series is passion. Only after I travelled along A82 through glencoe highlands up to inverness did I understand the sheer beauty of this land. Later I took the hogwarts express over Glenfinnan and lock shiel did I twig about highlander realising the filming locations then finding this vlog. As a welshman, I totally get it.

the woodland training montage...so the horse is galloping along through a forest with Connor running ahead, that scene must be filmed next to a road because the camera is following the running horse at speed and so the camera must be mounted to a moving vehicle which is driving along a smooth road. When I look at that scene it reminds me of the forest area just outside Glen Coe village, so as you head through the village westward you cross a small bridge over the river Coe, and as you continue along that narrow road the river Coe is on your right and to the left is a forest area that rises on an upward slope that I think might be the location, I tried to have a look on Google maps and it looks very similar, I've been wild camping there a few times by the river and it really reminds me of the sequence in the movie, might be a long shot, but it might be worth investigating next time you are in Glen Coe, next time I'm there I'll have a closer look.
Superb video thanks, in several weeks time I’m staying in glencoe and the locations are on my list, thanks
Thank you so much for this. Since watching the movie in 1987 I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since. I watch it every year and scooped up the latest 4K remaster. I had trips booked to visit a few places in 2020, but Covid prevented that and I had to cancel my bookings, and haven’t made it up there since. So this has been the next best thing so thank you so much for sharing your passion with us, your fellow enthusiasts share your love for this movie and this series has been a joy to watch and hear from start to finish. Great job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
I took an 1100 mile, solo van tour of west Scotland in August 2024. It was relatively unplanned, but based around a single desire to see Eilean Donan Castle for it's role in Highlander. It was an amazing experience, with the Highlander soundtrack playing while I drove. My only regret was not stopping at Glenfinnan and standing on the shores on Loch Shiel; it was absolutely packed with visiting Harry Potter fans. I wish I'd watched some of your videos before going, but as I didn't plan for much walking, I would have missed most of it anyway. This video had me in joyful tears that you were able to do this - what a fantastic achievement. I now want to go back!
So awesome seeing beautiful Gask! My ancestors are from here, surname de Gask that changed to Gass in the 1500s. I appreciate your video so much.
So sad that these clearly innocent women were put through such torment because they were ‘different’ for want of a better word. I have never heard of this lovely lady til now but it’s of special significance to me as having taken much interest in my family history and being knowledgeable about how many of us ‘Adie’s’ there are, the possibility of being a relative of hers seems fairly high 🤗 that’s fine by me. I shall be looking in to it I think.
This is absolutely brilliant. Very well done on a great video. Such a beautiful part of the world.
@@Bovey100 thank you buddy, glad you enjoyed it. Hope you enjoy the other two parts in my video section just as much 🤙

My Higlander trip in end of march is getting closer, fingers crossed conserning the weather. If Ralston Cairn is not the correct location for the tower, can you give some information how to find it?
@@Lbj79 Good morning. You must be excited to finally make the pilgrimage to some Highlander filming locations. If you watch the first part of my video, I indicate that where I’m standing is not the exact location for Heather and Connor’s home, but it’s down the hill a bit at another Cairn. If you find Ralston Cairn on your map, it’s literally the correct location, but perhaps 50 yards further down the hill. The filming spot is literally on the public path, you can’t miss it buddy 🤙

Well done!! brilliant series !, commemorating an iconic much loved classic film , now do “Restless natives” ;-)
Thank you, much appreciated. Funny, my partner wants me to do restless natives also 😀
It's heartening that someone actually from Scotland can be so inspired by a film produced by a British company, distributed by US publishers, directed by an Australian, with its lead a French actor. A timeless film followed by mostly failed attempts to replicate its success. At its heart, it is a Scottish legend planted in the 1980s. Hell of a location tour.
Thank you Alex. For me it’s about the story and the idea of living through the centuries, the people you would meet, the stories you could tell, it’s those elements that captured my imagination … and it being initially based in Scotland did add to the appeal 😀.

@@Fleurbunnydo you mean it was talked about a lot?
@@mackieoutdoors9410 yes, all history classes pretty much were about the Battle. Right from 1st through 6th year. Had to go on trips up there (which we didn’t mind, but being the ages we were, didn’t really pay attention) find it fascinating now.
I just watched a doc on Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, and there was a guy there called John Sage who was known for doing the most awful torture to captured Scots, including women and children. I can’t remember what it was called!! At the end of holding all these Scots prisoners, he told them they were going free. Except he led the adults out to their death by fire, and had the children all stand at the windows watching their parents burn. He then slayed all the children. The odd thing though, although this story is well known and talked about long through history. There is no record of a John Sage ever existing and being at Chillingham Castle. You should have stayed for one of the ‘ghost walks’ they do there. We went on one, and way back from the road, on that huge piece of land, everyone in the group heard Scottish voices talking and also heard fighting (as in battle). There was no one there. I’ve tried in every way to rationalise this, I’m not a believer so to speak, but, I think this may have been my one paranormal experience in life. (I did think they had speakers hidden and were playing sounds) but was later confirmed to be wrong. It’s a shame Boleskine House is under reconstruction right now, you could’ve visited there too. We wanted to go, but couldn’t.
@@Fleurbunny interesting. Throughout history, humans have again and again shown how cruel we can really be.
@@mackieoutdoors9410 he made barrels full of spikes inside and would throw Scot prisoners in them and roll them down a hill. Again though, although it’s talked about a lot, you tour the castle they talk about him lots, (making kids watch their parents burn etc) there is no record of his existence. Was he there under a fake name? Or, is it just tales told over time? Wish I knew. He apparently haunts the place now, but I certainly never saw/heard anything there. Did at the Moor though on a return ‘adult’ visit. Was weird!! (Still think the group that do the ghost tours have speakers hidden, as everyone on tour heard the battle cries etc at the same time).
