    The Briggs 2 cyl engine can use 1 or 2 Magnetrons. The single cable type is for negative output high voltage to spark plugs. The single Magnetron that has( 2) thick output cables runs 2 cyl engine differently. The regular autotransformer of 3 terminals has the output using full primary and secondary together in series for high volts negative. The ground for secondary is same as primary point. The dual large cables type is NOT connected to the primary side. One cyl runs on positive high volts while other cyl runs on negative high volts. (By using this type Magnetron it is possible to get just POSITIVE high volts , for a one cyl engine, by putting the negative cable end to ground. ( This is only important when doing experimentation of alternate energy with less electrical problems with positive high voltage and other parts added in. The older style MAGNETO before 1982 as just an autotransformer , can also be used for positive high volts output by mounting on engine upside down. Then the aftermarket universal trigger is added. That set up delivers mush less high volts positive , since the primary is NOT part of the secondary side windings when fired. The separate purchased Briggs brand trigger module works on Magneto in both directions of mounting. The full Magnetron only allows embedded trigger to work in normal mounting of the Magnetron for negative output. The universal trigger module purchased as Stens, allows engine to form high volts at a lower RPM of engine , contrary to the Briggs brand trigger. The Stens universal type also allows workings with BOTH desired output high volts as positive or negative. It too me too long in time to figure this all out. Operation on Hydrogen cell requires curved aluminum plate with curved slot to remount Magnetron for adjustable timing ATDC to about -34degrees. Briggs engine has fixed timing point. The other way, as it was done in Georgia 2008, is to have a wound electromagnet with steel screw core, over the coil cable to instill magnetic field from battery 6 amps that slows down the spark to last from TDC to -34 degrees.

      See 2008 You tube 2 videos by S1R9A9M9 and his Briggs 18HP running, idling, on water in carb. Electrolysis for hydrogen formed and fired at spark plug tips. Saltwater solution as about 10 ohms RESISTANCE requires about 100volts to force 6-10 amps through spark plug cell. At the lower piston travel, and volitile by the suction effect, water vapor also expands to vapor pressure to assist pushing down the piston. EGR adjustable valve added, also aids smoother running engine by recirculating portion exhaust water that contains embedded NITROGEN . Engine is an air pump that compresses air into water under pressure.

    On my HH120, with the original pins, I had to set my TDC pin at .054". That left the advance pin not kicking in at idle, but very shortly after coming off idle. Seems to work fine that way. I'm using an LS3 module, and PC2 sensor from a 92 Buick with a 2.3 liter engine.

    Dear Sir. Again just wandering. On the Farmall tractors could I install two pins on the crankshaft, and run two sets of these for a 4 cylinder engine??? Knowing this hits every time the piston comes up , I'm thinking if I split the plug wires on two coils I could make it much more simple to set up , and keep up with. Is this asking too much for this kinda set up? On my he magneto style of apposed cylinder engines , lots use a single coil with two plug wires. Or maybe use two pickup proximity switches , and 4 coils????? Both of these tractors have huge compression numbers , but are hard to crank and run after not having the point adjusted just perfect. Neither one has enough room to adapt an HEI GM distributor. Years ago I put an HEI distributor on an industrial 4cylinder. It was always hard to crank , but after it's new machined distributor, it cranked on first rotation. So I know if these two engines had hot spark, they would run much better.

  • @coburnlowman
    @coburnlowman ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Sir. I see this video is getting some age on it. Could and , would you make a video showing exactly what to do to the GM PC2 proximity pick up???? I was a tool maker , and built robotic machines in the past , but I'm an imbecile when it comes to electronics. We had techs who done all of the wiring, because some of us just didn't do electronics (AT ALL). I can solder pretty well from learning a little jewelry repair. So if you would lay it out , as to items are needed, and how to connect the dots, I'd love to do this. I have several engines that could benefit from this. 2 Farmall tractors that I'm constantly adjusting the points on.

    Hi there Ed, first of all thanks for sharing all of this great work you’re doing to keep these engines running, it’s given me hope that I can get my old tractor up and running. I had posted this online a couple of months ago but still haven’t been able to solve it: I have an (1969?) Sears 12 Hydrotrack with Tecumseh HH120. Died while mowing lawn, now zero spark. Bought an old Sears/Roper with a HH120 wired with a new push button start that would barely crank over the starter generator. The previous owner had the ground from the battery attached to a painted part so the SG was only getting 6-7 volts when cranking, moved the ground wire to the frame (as per another SS12 | have) and it fixed it, SG cranked over, hot spark, and it fired up. Ran the mower for a couple of hours and then it died. The engine was stressing a bit going up hill and then it felt like the kill switch was flicked while running and suddenly stopped. Checked for spark, zero spark. I've checked a bunch of things since it died but I want to hear your opinions before I go giving out bias. I have looked through your guide, checked the boot for the spark plug and zapped myself by touching the kill wire while cranking. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have a few photos and can make videos about my progress, I’m starting to suspect the Pulse Transformer or a simple oversight on my part! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi, I too am an engineer (EE). I'm close to retirement, but not quite there yet. I love "resurrecting" old technology, especially old outboard motors, generators, tube radios, and right now I'm working on an old Maytag washing machine motor (2-stroke twin cylinder). My generators include two 1960's ONAN twin cylinder engines and 3 old Civil Defense Kohler 350 watt "alternators". I've had the most fun restoring two old British Seagull outboards. One outboard has a standard "Kettering" points/mag/condenser ignition. The other has a very early Capacitive Discharge (CD) / magneto ignition. The 60/70 year old ignitions are usually the biggest challenge. I was wondering if you have ever experimented with the Velleman "transistor" electronic ignition trigger kit? I've read where it can take any type of input trigger (like the output of your old magneto coil), but is designed for reusing points and a battery. Also, you used two single electronic coil packs for the two cylinders. I'm wondering if the Velleman kit, your mag as trigger, and a single two-output dual coil (like a Dyna Coil) would work with your twin engine? I believe this twin works like my Onan twins and uses "wasted spark" (the spark plug fires in each cylinder on power, and during exhaust, which causes no problems). This is also like my BMW boxer 750 MC. Anyway, you have given me the incentive to finish the old Maytag engine project. I was going to buy one of the coils that a guy is manufacturing for folks restoring these old Maytags. But, he wants $150 for the dual-wound coil that fits under the flywheel. I may just go with your setup and adjust the timing as you did by adjusting the magneto pole gap. Keep up the good work. This is why I watch TH-cam. Thanks, Stu Los Alamos, NM

    I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve exactly. Does this provide a cleaner spark or are you just providing an alternative solution for ever increasingly hard to find parts for older engines? On another note, I was brought to your channel because of the failed pickup coil and module on a Tecumseh HH 120 on my Sears Suburban. I think I have another alternative and would like to hear your opinion. It could be lucrative. Hit me on messenger if interested.

      I used Ed's LS2 coil system on My Tecumseh HH120 (Sears Custom tractor), except I substituted a Chrysler crankshaft position sensor for the trigger, but with the same gaps as Ed's, and it works great. I had to run a toggle switch for the positive 12V to the LS2, since the original ignition only grounds out the original CDI when the key is switched off and the accessory tab for lights is off when in start mode. The LS2 gives multiple sparks when firing and I can get the Tecumseh to idle crazy slow when I play around with it.
