Discovering Cold War aircraft in rural Suffolk with my Triumph Vitesse 2 Litre
Join me as I take "Tess" my 1967 Triumph Vitesse 2 Litre on an early morning sprint across Suffolk to explore the beautiful market town of Bungay on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. We tour the town centre's wonderful architecture and then discover some Cold War Jets in the most unexpected place. Welcome to Flixton. However the clocks went back last night and we seemed to be the only ones who were up and at 'em!

Join me as I try out the new accelerator pedal on "Bess." The old convoluted set up was a Heath Robinson affair to match the standard pedal with the non-standard SU carburettors. This meant an "on-off" pedal feel. I also discover what the correct carburettor needles do for performance!

Loving your drives through the Suffolk countryside. I live in Clare so know the roads pretty well.We are very lucky to live in such a great part of the country.Keep up the good work.👍
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Richard. We really are lucky to live in Suffolk.
A Vitesse convertible and a lovely doggie - what's not to love?! Happy New Year and a great 2025 to you, Sean and all of your loved ones.
Happy New Year Colin. ❤
You were mentioning the 30 mph through little towns... I used to live in an old converted commercial building In Homedale, Idaho. The speed limit was twenty five mph. But, when the bars closed at 2 a.m., all those drunk country boys would put their foot on the floor at the stop sign downtown and those Cummins engined Dodges would fly by my house at some crazy speeds. I was always waiting for one to enter my lounge... I guess the coppers went home early. ;-)
❤
Just had another look at this video Sean (armchair surrogate driving on this weekend of dreadful weather!). I’ve only just seen in the side view at around 9.30 in addition to the glimpse of Heveningham Hall, there’s a good view of a helicopter leaving. I think the owner is a private pilot but I could be wrong.
Well spotted Peter. He was actually performing some low level manoeuvres which I think were better not shown on camera😮
The roads have been too salty and/or wet to get the Herald out for over a fortnight Sean, so I’m spending part of Sunday afternoon enjoying some of your videos; at least I can have a vicarious experience! Lovely coast and country scenes, thank you ☺️
I share your pain Peter 😂
Brooks Stevens did the heavy lifting on the redesign for the '64 Studebakers and managed to completely change the look of the car for about 5 dollars ( I don't remember the figure but it wasn't much.
So sad that brands like Studebaker and Packard are now a distant memory.
I was quite shocked to see a 64 Studebaker Daytona! I restored a four-door version of that car for my partner about 15 years ago. It was an interesting car. One of Studebaker 's last before fleeing to Canada for their last 2 years. LOL I've had a lot of Studebakers in the last 45 years. But the 64 Daytona, the 53 Commander starliner, and the 63 Avanti are my favorite designs from that corporation. And fortunately I've owned them all! I still have the Avanti. It's very driver quality. Haha
I love driving videos and show videos in equal measure. Wonderful to see all these cars we don't see over here. I love the The C2 Corvette also. It is my favorite design. From the stingray rear, to the pie plate gauges, to the high ratio muncie lugging away from a stop with that blub blub blub. But, make mine a split window coupe... 🙂
Thanks Kelly for your great comments. I agree with you about the split window👍
Glad to see you're back. Maybe I will be inspired to get some video rolling again. I'm in the middle of installing a new wiring loom in the MGB GT, then I'll have time to get my head into some filming. I'm sorry to hear about Bess, but relieved that you were going slowly and it was no worse.
Hello Sean. Thanks very much for the video - I don't know this part of Suffolk at all. I'm glad to learn that your 'day job' has expanded - all for the very best, I hope. On the other hand, I was sorry to hear about the problems you have had with Bess - being a former Mk 2 owner, I particularly feel for you! All the best for now, Colin.
Thanks so much Colin. I am so happy to share this with you. Hopefully I'll have Bess back before too long. Take care, Sean
@@seanhumfrey Hello Sean. I have just come across this video from The Two Ronnies: th-cam.com/video/6E9lByK3yQw/w-d-xo.html The car looks somewhat familiar - probably a Herald rather than a Vitesse, though. Hope you are well. Best wishes, Colin.
Thank you Colin, I have never seen that sketch before. Having taught both boys to drive, I can completely relate to this! A lovely Herald 13/60 in Valencia blue, I think. It was probably only about 5 or 6 years old at the time...an astonishing thought.
Great to see you back with a new video, many thanks for finding the time and making the effort.
Thanks so much Carl. It's my very great pleasure and I am so grateful for your lovely comment.
It was a glorious morning unfortunately I couldn't get out due to a back injury but a surrogate drive was appreciated.
John I am so sorry to hear about your back. That sounds miserable. Hope you feel better soon.
@@seanhumfreyit's on the mend fortunately
So glad to hear that John. Backs are a nightmare when you hurt them.
I had no idea there was an aviation museum at Flixton, I would certainly have visited, if I had known
Hello Sean, good to see you out-n-about in your lovely Vitesse. I like your opening film work, very nice. A great trip which would be nice to do if I were around the area, Hopefully we will be able to arrange a get together in 2025 for a Triumph chat and coffee. All the best Bob. (The Stag still work very well and was also out today at Bicester Heritage for a Flea Market event)
@@bobspeller2225 Thanks Bob, so sorry not to have been able to join you. It would be great to see you next year. I am delighted to hear that your beautiful Stag is running well. Take care, Sean.
Hi Sean, I remember Bungay very well, from my visits up there to see our friend, Mr.David A. who used? to live there. I recall coming across a whole flock of Chickens on the main road there. All very rural and bucolic!
It is such a lovely part of Suffolk Leon.
You are right Leon the chickens were feral and lived on the Ditchingham roundabout till they were rehomed in 2010
Welcome back Sean! Hopefully you’ll get Bess back on the road soon. (Note to self:check springs!) I used to be in Bungay regularly, agree with you it’s well worth a visit. As is the Aviation Museum; on one visit there I had a long chat to my hero Wing Commander Ken Wallis of Autogyro fame. The museum is next to the Buck Inn which in the early 70s was run by Alan Breeze who was Billy Cotton’s sidekick for over 30 years. (Showing my age now,”Billy Who???”)
Thanks so much Peter. Lovely place, the volunteer were all arriving to open up as I was leaving. Nice pub too, though it's been a few years since I last went in.
I met Ken Wallis once at an RICS dinner that Julian Spurrell invited me to. Amazing man and such a great after dinner speaker.
@@seanhumfrey Yes, me and my son went to an evening presentation he did at the village I used to live in. He drove there (about 20 miles from his home), gave over an hour talk about his life etc, kept talking to people in the interval, gave at least another hour (he hadn’t sat down at all). We were absolutely enthralled, he didn’t miss a beat. Then he packed his stuff up and drove home. He was over 90 at the time!! Amazing man, amazing life.
What an extraordinary man.
I encountered Ken Wallis on several occasions, back in the early 1980s, when he was a regular participant in air shows, with his home built autogyro!
The colour looks like triumph valentine blu often seen on 1360 heralds and triumph 1300 fwds
Hello, Sean. It seems like a fairly long time since we corresponded. It seems like you and your friends had a most enjoyable run, weather notwithstanding. Take care and stay well, C.
She is beautiful. Brings back memories of my Mk 2 Spitfire '66 . I still love that car even though I had to get rid of it in '80. I would love to find and old girl like her but... You know how your friend had problems, same here. Getting one would just be the start, let alone restoring it! Anyway thanks for the drive and the memories it evoked, so much so that i've sub'd to you, see you later....PS.glad to see you had or maybe she came with, the bonnet locks, that definitely reminded me of my Spit, she had the same. Something of a security addition, much to my peace of mind!
@@ianmckay1780 thank you so much for your lovely comment, and for subscribing.
Hi Sean, another interesting video and some very nice driving roads. Have a good week. Bob
Thanks so much Bob.
What an interesting video. I live in Boxted just a mile or so from Hartest. Such a beautiful part of the country.
So glad you enjoyed this.
Apologies everyone. The Audi coupe is apparently the real deal... Fire up the QUATTRO!
It’s a ‘full blooded quattro’ with a 2.2l turbo charged 20 valve 5 cylinder engine (RR designation) putting out 220 bhp in standard form
Fabulous, ❤️ I will pin your comment. Beautiful car 👌
❤
Hello Sean, thank you for another interesting and pleasurable day out! Perhaps, sometime, you can take us to some of the mediaeval places of interest in Aldeburgh and Snape. Best wishes, C.
Thanks Colin. I think winter drives are the answer when I can show you more. 👍
@@seanhumfrey Thank you, Sean. That's a good idea! Stay well.
A sunny Sunday morning driving an open top car through a quintessentialy English village with church bells ringing. What more could one want! Couldn't get to Thorpeness this year but good to see the cars.
Thanks John, it was a perfect morning. Hope all is well with you.
**THORPY AND THE THORPETTES!!**
So sorry YT doesn't allow me to film or record live music because of copyright issues. But here's a shout out 😍
Apologies. Not true, as I realise I have actually done so in another video. But I did require permission from the performer. I hope church bells don't come under the same category 🙏
The warning on the back window of the Wolsely that "this car uses trafficators" made me chuckle a little. I doubt if most modern drivers would even know what a trafficator is. Let alone be looking for a strange orange pointer thingy popping out from the 'B' pillar.😂 It's still a considerate gesture evenso. Maybe the owner is hedging a little self-preservation, too. Great video. I very much enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.
So pleased you enjoyed this. Trafficators or semaphore indicators are things of comic delight and lovely lost automotive features.
Great video, very nice put together. The show looked good. Hope to catch up with at some point, still knee deep in un-packing boxes and tip runs, The Stag is being used more now we moved and makes me happy and de-stressed after a nice run around the lane here in Oxfordshire, you would like some of these drive, so try and make it to the last Bicester Scramble of 2024 on the 8th of October. Hope to see you then. All the best Bob
Thanks Bob. I am so pleased that your move has been successful. I am just delighted you are getting to drive your lovely Stag more. I will try to get to Bicester this year. If I do manage it I will let you know in advance. Best wishes, Sean
I wish they'd bring back overdrive on third and fourth
It does make driving so much more fun 👍
I really will have to try to get there next year Sean! I’d have trouble deciding whether to drive off in the Packard or the Tiger (I should be so lucky…) Wonderful video as always, thanks ☺️ As for Tess, fingers crossed she’s cured. Did you replace the condenser in the end? I found mine played up erratically when the engine got hot.
I think if you are taking the Packard then you need your own chauffeur Peter. Happy to oblige! Actually Tess is on luminition ignition, but that has probably done about 40,000 miles so I imagine it will be up for review at some point. The Tiger is hard to resist, isn't it. But for the money I would be greedy and try to grab the Jensen And the Alpine instead!
That Vanguard thou' such presence, so solid, tough as old boots, remind me somewhat of a battleship, especially in grey, I do like the Beetleback version.
Astonishing cars for their time and like the Humbers and MK1 Jaguars and even the little Prefects, they feel over engineered but perfect for the roads of Uganda etc. at the time. It's sad that Standards like Rootes cars seem to have vanished from public consciousness.
The Red Packard HPB117 was first registered September 1938
That car really is something. Such an ignominious end for such a magnificent brand
The 4 door white Rover BPW495 was first registered in 1937
Was it?! That really is interesting.
A lot of those just post war cars, didn't have Chromed trim, it was often painted silver because of post war austerity, indeed, even getting a new car in those early post war years was nigh on impossible, unless you were a certain profession, such as a Doctor etc
Austerity of that kind is hard to relate to in England in the 21st century. I know that the same thing applied to building materials.
Driving down those country lanes, if the car in front gets past the oncoming traffic, then you KNOW you will fit, because all the moderns are wider than the Vitesse!
Lotus 7s AND mini mokes!
I miss the Church Bells, I miss England.
@@lordleonusa Me too.
Lovely drive of an iconic car
Thanks so much 😀
Hello Sean. I've finally got to this video (my To View list just keeps getting longer and longer!). I read Group Captain Cheshire's autobiography some time in my teens (clearly, a very long time ago) - it's certainly high time I read it again. Cheshire Homes are operational here in SA; my mother was something of a supporter (along with every animal charity there is!). I find it very inspiring that you have been sufficiently inspired by Cheshire to change the course of your own life. My hat's off to you. It's a pity I wasn't able to join you and your subscribers for the drive; I hope that a very good time was had by all. Very best wishes, Colin.
