  • It's David's first time on the public road driving a classic car! He and Jenny follow in "Bess" follow "Tess" and me as we take the cars to one of the most interesting shows in the Suffolk calendar.

What a great video and a great car show. Learned to drive in a Triumph Mayflower, 1954, 3 speed, 1200 cc flat head. Went on to own three Triumph 2000 before I ended up in the USA and driving became something different.

Thank you so much Neville for your lovely comment. I bet the 2000 must have seemed like a rocket compared to the Mayflower. Fascinating to think how those two cars bookend Standard's postwar progress.

Another cracking video Sean, it was great to have a guided tour of the car show, you must be a proud father seeing your son driving around in your Vitesse, it seems as if he may have caught the bug !, Thank you

Thank you for taking us along to this wonderful display of vehicles. Excellent to see so many pre war models in one place. So glad you paused to listen to the Garrett, amazing engineering from so many years ago. Have been to the Longshop several times, a great place to visit. It certainly looks like the Vitesses are in safe hands for the future.

British cars are very interesting for we Yanks, unique British car culture, beautiful, cutting edge car tech and craftsmanship in their day, a rich creative history, hopefully the UK will again build and export cars to the rest of us. It's a great car show. Thanks.

Such a lovely comment Marten. The Internet has given us such wonderful insights into the car cultures around the world in a way that was inconceivable twenty years ago. I am equally fascinated by American and Australian cars. Car guys are car guys wherever we live👍

@@seanhumfrey ~ Growing up in Southern California 70 years ago, it was a perfect place to own a British sport car, or Italian or German, they were all there, but the most plentiful were the British. In the 1950s and 60s the freeways weren't so dominant and there were many of small roads through orange groves, truck farms, mountains and coastal towns that driving a sports car with the top down was the best. Back then it was a bit like paradise. ~ England is America's mother country, our founders were British colonials, our Bill of Rights came from the English Bill of Rights, and our Common Law was based on English Common law. Thanks England and British car guys.

For a small show that was quite an impressive turnout. What a great selection of cars. It looked as if that tractor presented a bit of a surprise around 9 minutes into the video. While it sounded as if your son briefly managed to lock up the brakes, it appeared that he managed to keep his cool. While adapting to the inefficiency of old braking systems after driving nothing other than modern cars is one thing, adapting to the lack of ABS is a bit different.
I can still remember a learning experience involving braking that I was provided when I was young. At the time I was giving my younger brother a ride home from school in my Triumph Spitfire. Not long after entering a big bend in the road I spotted some unexpected cars backed up ahead (that I really should have spotted earlier). I made the poor decision to quickly apply my brakes mid-corner and of course the rear-end started to come sliding around. As I had grown up riding dirt bikes this was not an unfamiliar sensation and I quickly managed to get myself out of trouble. Still I was embarrassed to no end, despite my younger brother thinking that I was just showing off. That was a mistake that I would never make again.
All these decades later I continue to focus on making my driving inputs as smooth as possible. In the 45 years since receiving my license I remain accident-free and still have a perfect driving record. No doubt thanks in part to some of the lessons I learned early on while driving that Spitfire.

I think David turned a whiter shade of pale at the prospect of rear ending me and damaging both cars! Interesting for him, first time driving a car without ABS. How did we all survive? 😀

Greetings from NZ again and thanks another great video. Yes the first "Ark Royal" is a 60. I really enjoyed the road trip too and have got into the habit of pulling up Google maps on another screen so I can follow where you are going.

Thank you Graeme. I am delighted that you enjoyed this. I am much obliged for your knowledge on the Cadillac. In the UK, you can often confirm the year by the letter code on the registration. However this applies to registration dates after 1962. Imported cars can be all over the place. I need to brush up on my American cars! Google maps is a brilliant idea 👍

Fabulous show. A great selection of cars and lovely to see the Suffolk Punch. I remember spending hours poring over photos of this as a child, fascinated by the design. I spent my childhood and teenage years at steam rallies, but being Yorkshire focussed never got to see it in the flesh. Very enjoyable video. Thank you.

Great comment👍There were five cars that I intended to go back to study in detail, two of which were Rovers, the P6 and P5. If you get the chance, check out Alex's Assets on TH-cam. She lives and breathes Rovers. Their engineering and technology and build quality was far superior to Standard Triumph and I do hanker for a P4 for comfortable winter travel. Let me see what I can find for you at the upcoming Alde valley classic car show. 😀
