Testing My Americanadian Husband on Britishisms - Part 2

Michael has been living in Britain for almost 8 years so I find it really fascinating and sometimes hilarious which Britishisms he has picked up and which still baffle him. •Become a member of our main TH-cam channel for early access, priority replies, extra content, discounts in our shop and a personalised postcard! th-cam.com/channels/J1_CKxovjYVXkpNCLOjrbA.htmljoin or •Support us on Patreon ...

Actually too much Vitamin C can cause kidney stones. Always look at the UL of things. They are constantly reevaluating them, so I relook at the things I take every few years.
People also use the shifts and growth in understanding of science as a reason to not care or trust it. Which shows a fundamental lack of understanding of science. Not only the mechanisms but also the importance of the philosophy behind those.
0:17 My stepdad's boat - "Oakey Dokey" on the left 😊
That’s amazing and so beautiful 🤩 ❤
I passed this river on holiday back in July seen the little barge tied up in same place , I really like that whole area with the rivers
Very peaceful and atmospheric . Thankyou . All the best for 2025 xxx
Long ago in a galaxy far away, I remember fishing at the Foss Basin (Now called Castle Mills Marina) next to the lock gates and weir. A barge called Reklaw used to use the lock regularly, it was a coal barge owned by coal distributors Walker, who were based next to the River Foss at Layerthorpe (I think!). The Foss Basin locks (Now called Castle Mills locks) used to be manned full time in the sixties as I recall and fishing was not allowed from the island. The RSPCA was also based at the Foss basin too as I recall. Or was it the PDSA... So many wonderful memories from long ago! Thank you for reminding me!
Gosh, Castle Mills lock looked hard work and a very unusual mechanism. Gathered from the 'extra' bods on board you were being filmed. Is this for Narrow Escapes? Great video of your journey. X
Yes, we were actually being filmed for season 3 of Narrow Escapes so it may be a while before we are on the TV. Thank goodness for the IWA and River Foss society volunteers who locked us through Castle Mills, it has rather an unusual lock mechanism.
The Naburn Nature Trail and Sensory Garden would be worth visiting as would be the Black Smith, the Lock Keepers Cottage and the WW2 Bunker.
And not forgetting tea by the lock.
There are only 516 people in Naburn .
And a few more if there are lots of boats moored up.
@MinimalListMaximalVelocity I googled Tasmanian small towns to compare with Naburn and there were a few around 516 including a seaside fishing town of Swansea. Most of the smaller towns have about 800,the city of Launceston where I live has 77000
Must be Christmas,I am getting behind on your videos
Merry Christmas. I am getting behind on them too.
Loved these 2 videos on the river Foss. Amazing reversing skills Michael!
I think it was about a mile that Michael had to reverse in the end.
Pretty fancy maneuvering Michael! I've been following your channel since the Pandemic, you are a wonderful, unique, couple. Thank you for some interesting (Americanism) hours of enjoyment on the English canals. Happy New Year; have an uncomplicated 2025.
Thanks for all the support and Happy New Year to you too.
Wow!!!!!!! I’ve lived in York over 25yrs and I’ve never seen a boat come down there 😮. Amazing. Well done guys
Navigable might not describe this river! But I guess other means of transport eclipsed it, eh?
Not really - it was in use by commercial traffic up to 25 years ago, and could be used again.
Enjoyable trip thank you, so sad the waterways are so overgrown even the lock gates are camouflaged., the gates also need freeing up that poor lady was struggling.
Absolutely astonished that you got so far. Well done! When we tried it back in the day (turn of the century), we only managed to get between the bridges at Layerthorpe before we ran aground. My mate had to get out into the river and push, whilst I used the barge pole! Amazing stuff - has to be some kind of record I would have thought. What a triumph!
WTF
No winding hole meant we had to reverse.
What is the professional looking camera setup following you on this journey?
Has to be Narrow Escapes I recon. I know they’ve just finished filming the second series of it. They are maybe in it
It is for season three of Narrow Escapes
Did you know you had a stowaway aboard, and there is something different about the camera operator
Is that Channel 4 filming you?
Thanks for the cruise. ❤
Thanks. 👍
It's not until, as an English person, you talk to someone foreign born that you realise how much we use Britishisms and slang..I love the confusion which washes over their faces
Loved it!
The funniest part is watching Jo trying to not collapse laughing! 🙂
"council housed and violent" as an etymology for "chav" is a backronym (just like .e.g "Port out, starboard home" for "posh") - an acronym made up after the fact. Most acronyms cited as the origin of words are actually backronyms, especially for any word that originated before circa world war I.
Caster Sugar - we have to put regular sugar in the blender and whiz for a second. Saran/surround Wrap - LOVE it. Cobblers - BS. The herb, no.. the herb. I am trying to work whilst listening and laughing too hard. Cilantro - blech. It's a doddle! I use so many of these because I was in boarding school in Sussex. Then moved back to the States. My husband will watch a BBC/ITV show with me and suddenly say - THAT'S what you mean!!
Keep it up this was a lot of fun!
There are many regional variations of words in Australia. Tasmania being an island does not use words in common use in the rest of the country.
Its really funny isn't it.
@MinimalListMaximalVelocity I was born in Victoria and came to Tasmania at age 3 . Mum found that the words Cordial and Soft Drink mean different things in Tasmania. Cordial is for adding water - Soft Drinks are carbonated. Was very confusing to Mum at first because shopkeepers did not understand.
An ice box is an eski
More!
That was good fun maybe one the other way next time 😂
Ethereal- beautifully captured
Lovely. Greetings from York. Hope You two are staying in good health.
David??
Yes, David Johns filmed this cruise. Google "255. The 2,000-mile canal journey that took four years" for his vlog.
Welcome to quick jobs on a narrowboat… at least you didn’t have to pull the boat out of the water 😂😂
❤ hi
Hilarious
This made me laugh!😂
❤ relaxing thank you
Hi ❤️ have a wonderful day Hugs
❤ thank you for continuing to put out lovely videos Hugs to all of you
Hi ❤ hope you are doing well
Have a pint in the Wig and Pen Northampton. Great traditional pub.
This was great 👍😂
@ilovebillyjoel the next episode is now up! th-cam.com/video/phGiRGVDPXU/w-d-xo.html
As a wannabe retiree narrowboater, thanks for being candid about the social aspects of canal/river life as I would be a singleton boater (I might eventually get a bit lonely with just myself and dog for company) Also very full of great boat choice practicalities 👍 You've given me quite a few things to look out for when I finally perchase my boat My retirement is next year so its research time 😅 Ive been debating if I should keep a small base on land A foot in each camp (if I can afford it) Maybe split my time/seasons between boating and land might help me to keep some grounded community.. Umm... food for thought Thanks to both of you Take care And keep warm 💗✨️🙏
More please
