Unleashing Publison IM90 on Oberheim DX
maybe unpopular opinion but i don’t consider him a rockstar
He just described the Pumpkins since the late 90s.
Aging gracefully, is not something many "Rockstars" have learned to do.
Hasn't put out material since the 90's..............
Steve puts the bad in the badass
This rule doesn’t apply to classical composers
How old is this guy? He dresses like a 13 year old from the 90’s?
Corgan is a smart guy and is being introspective to a great degree, but he may not quite see that he’s not just talking about musical expression but getting older in general. For artists of every genre, often their best work happens young and by the time one’s 30s come, they fade - success might impact it but it’s more just life happening to everyone. Mozart died at 35, but was immensely prolific. Comparing historical eras is dicey, but if you compare writing efforts, musical composition, painting, sculpting, you see a distinct downward spiral. Some love Picasso in his later years but history will show that he didn’t do much of value after his early periods (I’m perhaps the only person who thinks Guernica is a self indulgent mess but future art historians will agree with me. One can hold on to youth in many ways, but it gets sad when one can’t let it go.
Looking at Axl Rose and thinking, damn dude release some new music!
This dude is a total narcissist
UNLEASH THE DRAGONS ON THIS MAN
Thom Yorke has joined the chat....
When you get into a new band and they knock out one or two (rarely three) great albums is it so hard to think that that is what the audience resonates with most and what they want you to play live? Out of loyalty you stand there for two hours of new material waiting to see if they still play your favourite track from the first album. I think this is why bands do so well playing back catalogue tours, we are desperate to recapture that initial feeling.
I wonder if he’s still curious about it. Bedazzled rockstars literally make sh¡t nonstop. It’s what they do best.
Have u seen Art Garfunkel lately? Just horrific.
is this one of those paid promotional bs things?
I think he is right in observing that the rock stars of past diminish in creativity, but I dont think he should say that he is going to go down differently. He did what he did and had a hell of a ride, nothing to be ashamed of at all. Even the strongest and most dominant lions fade away or get overtaken in the Serengeti by the up and coming younger lions looking to prove themselves and make their mark. Its the way the world spins, the old gives way so the new can be born and rise, they too will succumb to the cycle. Nothing can stop that cycle. Look at the most beautiful of flowers, they wilt, but new ones will rise. Its sad, but we just have to be glad they were here when they were. Billy....you made your mark, don't stress yourself, enjoy the fruits of your work.
Talent can dry up, unfortunately.
Everyone loses ability with age.
I always figured the only place for aging rock stars was in their interpretation of the blues. I must be wrong, though. Almost never hear it...though there are exceptions.
Billy was always his own biggest fan
Hunger leads to necessity. Necessity leads to innovation. Innovation leads to success. The issue with great success is it diminishes the hunger. Which in turn diminishes the innovation. The bands of the late 80’s early 90’s all had their first 1 or 2 albums that had a visceral, raw quality to them. Pretty Hate Machine, Appetite for Destruction, Ten, The Lion and the Cobra, Nevermind, and on and on. They were raw nerves and emotions. One tends to mellow and become more refined with age and continued success.
Every artist has a peak creative window.
Guy is 10 years younger than me. He looks 20 years older.
Even M*A*S*H ran out of good ideas after an amazing run. Rush stayed strong till the end. Even as their health faded. It's a creativity vacuum thing
I love Billy & TSP but isn’t that scarf high end fashion wear equal to rhinestone jeans? 😅
Nothing last forever, artist get older and so do their fans. Being a rebel works when you're young and broke, but it comes off as fake when you're wealthy and middle aged.
Thank God I never got signed- my songs are awesome 😂
Phil Anselmo is better than ever.
Talent doesn’t always equal success. You can be successful without talent. Some people would call it luck, I call it timing. Timing is everything.
There’s something to be said about the explosive power of youth….its a key ingredient to the alchemy that occurs with great bands….and yes, it’s rare to feel any great artist is able to sustain that and keep relevance with new generations…
Really, it all boils down to the PR you use that keeps you relevant.
It's interesting to me that Corgan (and most of the comments here) focus on the individual artist, their mentality, their motivation, their talent, etc. There's no real reason to expect very talented musicians to anticipate cultural trends and the changing tastes from one generation to the next. He can be as hungry or talented as he wants - the Smashing Pumpkins are still a quintessentially 90s piece of pop culture. He talks like it's all based on a pure assessment of music - it's not. There are some bands and artists who have 2nd and 3rd acts and remain relevant over multiple eras, but that's the exception rather than the rule. I'm not so sure that "talent evaporates" or that it's just a matter of a musician becoming wealthy and comfortable. New trends develop, audiences move on.
I think that after many years of writing, recording and touring, many bands choose to take the path of least resistance, which inevitably leads to a watering down of the art.
hmm, he might have a point, but as an older musician myself, you lose so much energy and emotion and passion as you age. So, you can still make good music, but it won't have the same passion behind it, especially if your music is rock. Rock NEEDS emotion and passion. Rock isn't about sharing the wisdom of an old man. Rock is about the undying lust for life that comes from youth. *Of course there are exceptions, but in general, that's how it goes.
This dude is a tool, get him on a personal level
The issue is: as you age, your fan base does too. The next generation tends to gravitate toward music that they grow up with or what aligns with their age..
Billy Corgans success Is a mystery - he couldn’t sing when he was young let alone now. The band were great though, yet funnily enough he thinks it’s all about him. Parasite. Typical singer😂
Here is the thing. What BC is talking about is true for everyone in every profession, but the difference is that in the arts you are constantly evaluated by a relatively honest assessment of your current real output. In most businesses this same thing happens, but it gets filtered through your accumulated power and wealth. I'm sayin this same thing was true of people like Bill gates and Steve Jobs and millions of other businessmen, but the difference is your output as a business leader isn't honestly evaluated the it is as an artist. As a business leader your output is disguised by the work of dozens or hundreds or thousands of other workers and assistants that the business leader gets to take credit for.
How disappointing Billy Corgan has turned out to be
The Chicago rock / metal scene in the late 80s early 90s was underrated .
You are only young once , can’t be 21 in 50s-60s . I have been lucky to see all those bands in their prime , their youth it was great. Now when I see them and they can’t hit those notes or play certain parts in songs as they did back in the day , it’s sad . Especially the ticket prices, today they want an arm & leg to see washed up bands, back then I paid maybe 25-30 dollars.
Had a bunch of tabs open and as I went through them and eventually came to this one... for a split second I thought this was an interview with George Lucas... 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry, I only know your old songs 😂
Great sound is not like it was back in the 1980's I think today nobody cares.
The greatest aging video I saw was Fred Durst. OMG! Fred's energy on stage looking like Santa got me shooting my fists in the air.
Siamese Dream was an absolute masterpiece.
Great perspective…
So just another case of not knowing when its time to retire. Even I, at 48 am starting to ignore bands because of age, and their lack of a new contribution to be relevant
Is he talking about himself ? 😅
