Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 40, (Second "Original" Version, 1928)
Here's a follow-along score of an ultra-rare recording of the second, 1928 version, of Rachmaninoff's highly underrated Piano Concerto, No. 4, Op. 40
Like his 1st piano concerto, there are three versions of the magnificent work. (Yes, there are THREE version of the 1st piano concerto, not two, as many people believe.) The original 1926 manuscript version was compiled by Boosey & Hawkes in 2000 after considerable interest and was recorded three times, first by Alexander Ghindin at the piano and Vladimir Ashkenazy conducting.
This second 1928 revision is a rather truncated version of the manuscript and was the first "officially" published version. I'm sorry to say that this rendering is probably the most overlooked work of Rachmaninoff's entire oeuvre. In it, you can trace how Rachmaninoff was highly unsatisfied with the so-called superfluous sections of the manuscript version and subsequently cut out entire sections and modified a few passages.

This work by Gottschalk is truly astounding. It's one of those works that should be as famous as Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66 (posth.), but, unfortunately, faded into obscurity, just like the genius who penned it. There's a furtive, perhaps oblique, reference to Chopin's e-minor Prelude. In the 'B' section of the work, the left hand crawls from D7 to an F7, perhaps inspired by Chopin's P...

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was one of the most well-know (and, in my opinion, highly underrated) pianist/composers of the 19th century. Many of his compositions were in the standard repertoire of pianists from his time until the turn of the century, when, by the 1940s it was nearly all but forgotten, save for the few enduring, major works. In this recording, we hear pianist Leonard Pennario's uniq...

Read through this piece many years ago. Thanks for bringing it and the memories back.
23:10 a moment of gorgeousness, not heard in the later version
Honestly, this recording is not live by any mean. No audience, not a single wrong note. Clearly a studio recording
Where is it?
@@AnatoArchives It could be an unpublished recording (not the first time someone post unpublished recordings). Or could even not be MAH, but someone else recording (also not the first time, as this is not MAH official channel). This recording completely lacks the liveliness of a live recording beyond any doubt. It's easy to recognize this if you have been to a decent amount of concerts. Also no clapping at the end. This is really suspicious as usually the audience explode at the end of pieces like this. And on top you NEVER hear not even once the audience during 11 minutes of recording and have 0 background noise. This cant be a live recording, definetly a studio rec.
My first hearing of this was the Ampico piano roll version recorded by Josef Lhevinne - that was fabulous, but Hamelin here is just superb, and it's a more musical interpretation.
My right hand is getting tired just watching this.
6:33 is unbelievable gently number 🤌🏻
I love all three versions! Each one has its own distinctive beauty! All the climax build ups are very exciting! Yet, all the lyrical melodies are very enchanting with a touch of melancholy and nostalgia!
I definitely think that even though the later revisions made the piece a little more difficult to listen to due to the structural asymmetries, but overall makes the piece more succinct and compelling. I prefer the 1941 version
Why does it say 1927 version on the Chandos Cover?
Crazy difficult piece.

I like it! Thanks for sharing.
OMG! That ... was ... ... ... incredible. I think ti surpasses J. Lhevinne as my favorite. Astounding! A pianist's pianist! Thank you for posting this, though the performer's name deserves inclusion in the title of your post!

"Rachmaninoff was highly unsatisfied with the so-called superfluous sections of the manuscript version".... I believe the story was slightly different. Rachmaninoff received a lot of criticism for "unplayable and utter-gibberish" sections of the concerto, something critics back then also said for his sonatas. This was enough to start doubting all his future works. Too bad he didn't stick to his guts. I truly hate critics.
Critics was one of the reasons ,but Rachmaninoff did feared about the length of the concerto before the first performance. He complained it on a letter to Medtner.
What's going on at 3:00? Sounds like the MIDI didn't get edited properly :(
He added a countermelody to the pick up notes, on the repeat. The kind of thing 19th century pianists did all the time.

I adore this piece. I absolutely love the first 6 or so pages. Marc Andre Hamelin plays them so lightly, with such clarity.
Best pianist ever walking this planet. Basta!
This is actually comparable to Lhevinne's recording (which is on TH-cam now) - and you can't often say that !

There’s something worthwhile and different about each version
This rendition of the 2nd mvt. has just smashed me into the chair. And then reassembled.
Perhaps the finest version yet. Oh, how tenderly ravishing, how imaginative, how poignantly compelling!
I had the pleasure of seeing this performed recently by Conrad Tao! I was ten feet from the piano... I will never forget that concert! The symphony opened with Copland's El Salón México - what a dazzle to experience live!
Well it may have been the later revision you heard. Glad you enjoyed the work in person!
Selten gespielt ! (leider). Tolle Interpretation
I wonder how Marc André can learn always new repertoire, have concerts and compose... And after all this, doing all of them very very good. How, where and when????
He's just one of those ultra-rare geniuses that are born every 300-400 years... He's like the Einstein of the piano.
ppl like him literally sight read through these pieces
Q : could you make this MORE FANCY? A : NO.
Jakop Gimpels sounds better imho
@@couponcam yes, Ms. expert, but is it fancier?
@@thePsykomanteum There is no complete recording of the piece arranged by Jakop Gimpel but if you compare the sections that are the same, the arpegios are a bit longer and faster if thats what you mean.
