Great video as always! I wanted to add to the flashbacks advice - give your players some prophetic dreams inbetween the loops! If every loop begins at sunrise, tell one of the players that they saw a weird eerie dream. And watch them try to decipher what it means 😆
THATS A GENIUS IDEA! You have no idea, you just changed the whole part of one of my campaigns!!! THANK YOU!! Pinning this
@@BananaBreakdown omg, I'm so glad you liked it!
yessss!!! I need more awesome videos like this one!!!!! I want to dm a fate campaign, but have no clue how it works 🥲 You are doing a great job, please continue
Omg thank you!! Also working on a full guide explaining everything! Part 1 and 2 are on the channel. I’m a little sick but once I’m 100% I plan to work on part 3
@@BananaBreakdown get well soon!! I already watched previous parts and can't wait for more :)
You the best!
Awesome! One of these videos for every Fate Core mechanic please? :D (no stress, no stress. Good explanation!) Edit: Correction, I just saw you had more of em behind the D&D tierlist. I'll be binging em then :D
Omg thank you. Literally making my year over here!!! Anything specific you wanna see?!
Also I plan to do all the parts!!
Forget Fate Try Savage Rifts Will love to see you make a whole series about that. Hit North America, South America, Atlantis and sone Europe 🤤👍
I don’t think I’ve heard of savage rift! I’ll do some research and play a few games! Be ready to see some content soon!
Best wishes with your new channel, and maybe covering something other than D&D will work out well too. I feel like that market's over-crowded, but I also think it could use some fresh voices. So good luck!
Thank you so much! This is really nice of you to say! I just hope I do it justice!!
Nice! I needed to know when and how to use short and long rests, this video was perfect.
Oh that’s so great to hear!! I’ve been doing more bite sized vids like these in case people don’t wanna watch longer videos haha
my brain before the video starts: "barbarian swarm with random big sticks they found off the ground and throwing rocks." I must be a cave man commander or something
Hahaha Barbarian Toby
Sorry my man but this video doesn't hold up in any case. You've basically traded your spellcasters for a potion by not buying them spellcasting focuses. Also, wizard needs a spellbook which consumes 50gp (same as healing potion). You could work around it by just not getting wizard his spellbook but with such a manouver you trade a lot of resourceless utility (ritual spells) for single consumable item. You could even argue, that by casting false life for a price of mere spellslot you would get only on averge 3 hp less and false life is much better option, as downed character will potentially lose it's turn, same with a character that needs to give him healing potion. You could argue, that giving someone false life requires you to choose first on who you'll cast it, but I'll counter it with "let cleric heal them with spells or stabilize with spare the dying". Same case with paying for armour: if you want a optimal approach, just get wizard his book and focus, so he can use his spellslots for mage armour (it has a range of touch, not self) so rogue and fighter will get ac of 13+dex, which is way more than any nonmagical light armour. If you would say, that "wizard and cleric get their focuses from their starting equipment" video also wouldn't hold up, as rogue and fighter get their weapons and armors as a part of starting equipment. Let my vast critique be something to inspire you on optimisation jurney, as all build challanges are about optimal solution.
Thank you for this!! I absolutely love learning how to get better. Your perspective is really helpful. These are really great points and honestly one of the reasons I love d&d so much! There are so many different ways to do things. I absolutely love that you spent the time to explain it too. I really appreciate viewers like yourself that make my channel better :)
My build would be Barbarian: Shield (10gp), leather (10gp), geataxe (10gp) Bard: Flute (2gp), leather (10gp) Druid: leather (10gp), shield (10gp) , druidic focus (1gp) Monk: Quarterstaff (2sp) A dart quiver for a ranged option for everybody for 160 darts (1,8gp) A healer's kit (5gp) 3 extra bedrolls (3 gp) Explorer's Pack (10 gp) Dungeoneer's Pack (12 gp) And 5 GP left For renting a room or hiring services on a nearby city.
Mate this is better than my build hahaha I love this! Especially the healers kit
Wouldn’t the cleric just use healing word or cure wounds instead? Seems like a waste of HALF your gold Yknow.
100% agree, BUT I’m doing a healing potion in case the cleric can’t reach the other players. It’s more of a backup. It’s so expensive tho 😭
Really awesome video idea. Makes me want to run a one-shot where my players are all commoners in the same small settlement who have just gained 1 level in their respective classes. The settlement has to come together to stop a local goblin den from growing any stronger and the community has only been able to muster up 100gp for the newfound party. Each player could also start with an item specific to their character as well if they aren't good at budgeting. I read in another comment thread that this video was almost scrapped, but I want to say thanks for uploading this anyway, it's an awesome creative spark - and as I saw in other comments I think others would agree.
You made my year mate. You’re 100% right it was in the recycle bin ready to delete but needed to upload something and too sick to work on something new right now. You’re awesome and I even showed my wife this comment cause it was so nice of you to say. Your ideas freaking awesome. I LOVE community based sessions. I need to hear the outcome of this if you drive to do this!
@@BananaBreakdown While snooping in other comment threads I saw you were considering setting up a discord; I'd love to join if it ever gets set up and possibly run this sort of one-shot type campaign.
Perfect! I just impulse-bought the Fate Core rulebook (well, not more or less. It was on sale at DriveTrough, but I decided to get it at my local RPG Store instead; which means I had time to resist, but didn't :)), and am now looking forward to running my fist games. Keep the videos coming, reading the book is important, but I feel additional videos make it stick better :)
I love it! Also great to support your local RPG store! They are so hard to find these days :( Oh that’s so awesome! Also 100% if you need any help just ask! Either I or someone will help you! This community is amazing
Oh I like a video that gets me thinking! A few thoughts: First: We can actually go a bit cheaper in a few spots: The fighter's short sword costs 10g, but the trident costs just 5g (in the 2024 PHB). And it is versatile (1d8/1d10), meaning it does more damage! And we can Throw it! I'd consider it a budget upgrade for sure. Secondly, our Rogue's dagger is nice, but also vastly overcosted. A sling, which deals the same damage but is a ranged weapon, so our rogue doesn't need to risk their skin in melee range, costs a measly 1sp! An absolute steal! Second: As of 2024, everyone gets a feat at first level! So what if we made sure everyone was a magic initiate (Wizard)? Then they could learn the mage armor spell and cast it once at the start of their dungeoneering day, for a respectable AC of 13+Dex. That's two points more than leather armor, at the attractive cost of nothing at all! We could reinvest the money saved from the fighter's armor into a second shield for our cleric! After all, we don't want our healer to go down, if we can help it. On that note, the wizard could take magic initiate (Cleric), to have an emergency healing word in hand, in case our cleric does suffer. Third: There's no rule against this, but as it stands, our party is naked! I think they should invest in some Traveler's clothes for 2gp a piece - or if that's too bourgeois, they can wear robes at a 1gp price point. Maybe some priestly robes are a good idea anyways - with that kind of budget, these adventurers will need some divine favor. With these three things in mind, I'd propose the following shopping list: Wizard: A Staff and some Robes, for 6gp total Cleric: A holy symbol, Some robes and a shield, 16gp Fighter: A trident, some robes and a shield, 16gp Rogue: A sling and some robes, 1.1gp This leaves us with a whopping 60.9 gp to spend on other things - ropes, so many! Also thieves' tools for the rogue, bedrolls, rations, waterskins. We could even buy a few mules for our adventurers to ride (though the saddles would stretch our budget) And if our challenge was a bit uncharitable and the wizard's spellbook actually requires a book on our shopping list, well, we've got the 25g to spare! But since we've got so much room, why not make one more adjustment: One, we could upgrade the rogue's sling to a light crossbow, for 1d8 damage and a better range to boot! 25gp well spent. And Two, our fighter will want high dexterity, since neither mage- nor leather armor offer that much protection without it - so why not let them run with a finesse weapon as well? A rapier for 25gp would let them streamline their build a bit more - a fighter with 18AC and 1d8+3 damage on their sword attacks barely feels like it was built with any restrictions at all, does it? It's surprising how far you can get with this limited a budget! My first thought to optimize low-budget parties honestly was to pick different classes, but even with the classical four, there's a lot of room to be cheap!
My other idea, foregoing the magic initiate shenanigans and still avoiding paying for armor, would involve some other classes: Instead of a fighter, why not bring a barbarian? A monk surely would fit the bill here as well, to deliver some low-cost damage, even though I liked our budget rogue already. A druid to replace our cleric - itd still need armor, but the sprig of mistletoe is cheaper than a holy symbol. And instead of a wizard, we bring a Bard. Books are for nerds anyhow... This party has two adventurers starting with some kind of unarmored defense, but our casters look a little squishier than I'd like. The barbarian, like our fighter before, gets Robes, a Trident and a shield and will set us back 16gp The monk - well, we could buy them a quarterstaff, but their unarmed attacks will end up outscaling that soon enough. Robes for 1gp and that's IT. The druid gets a sprig of mistletoe, some robes and a shield, that's 12gp The bard gets their robes, and a flute for the magic. 3gp A coil of rope for good measure, and this new and improved party cost a grand total of 33gp!
...this makes me think: how much further could we shrink our budget?
like, tossing the shields (because damn, those are expensive), we could cut on the barbarian's cost - a greatclub is 2sp and still deals 1d8 damage. A nudist party of a barbarian, monk, druid and bard (four classes that, arguably, would be more fine than most with fighting goblins naked) might be able to function with only 3 gold and 2 silver pieces between them! And the party would still contain a main- and a backup healer, magical support, control, and a frontline that dishes out damage. The standard party fares way worse under these conditions (barring magic initiate cheese), as neither the cleric nor the wizard could afford a spellcasting focus, and thus be limited to spells without material components.
oh darn it! The '24 warlock gets to summon a spellcasting focus for free, using pact of the tome at level 1! The bard's 2gp flute can leave! Barbarian frontliner for 2sp Monk Melee DPS for free Druid control caster/ big critter/ healer for 1gp Warlock arcane caster (for blasting?) (potentially a healer with the celestial patron) for free. We can equip a likely-functional party made up of four different classes, including damage, battlefield control and healing with just 1 gold and 2 silver. (well, 2g 2s with our coil of rope.)
I want to write a really big thank you because I’m currently sick in bed and reading this really made me feel better. If I make a discord which I’m thinking about soon I’d love you to join. You’re the kind of person I want in this community.
Coins don’t work as a replacement for the dice. With only plus and minus (no blank) you get only even numbers (−4, −2, 0, +2, +4) and a different distribution (e.g. 6.25% instead of 1.23% for ±4).
I think the money for the healing potion would have been better used getting a spellcasting focus or pouch of material components for the wizard as well as maybe some ranged weapons. If you can stay out of melee you will take less damage. Also, since we are including a cleric I think that if they spec into healing a little bit the healing potion won’t be super important at all. Maybe have them go war domain or something so that we can also give them some weapons and that way they can save all their spellcasting for healing party members if we are that concerned about it. Great video btw!
the staff counts as a spellcasting focus, so that's not as much of an issue (although it does cost 5g, not 2g)... but the cleric does lack a focus (or component pouch, but those are pricey, at 25g)
Appreciate it! Ngl you’re probably right, I was a bit worried about the healing potion. It’s so expensive lol and to give it to the cleric was also a bit of an idea I had haha. Your ideas are much better ngl. Also glad you enjoyed it! I actually originally scrapped this! But needed to upload a vid as I’m sick
@ it’s still a very cool idea and the presentation is good.
Thank you so much mate.
Back in the days of 2E, I had a player (also a good friend) who just wasn't getting what Lawful Neutral characters were all about. So, on a non-game day, he and I kicked back and we watched a few episodes of the 1960s TV series The Fugitive. I had him focus on the character of Lieutenant Gerard, the incorruptible lawman who put his duty over moral concerns. That's when he got it, and he started playing his LN fighter just like Lt. Gerard. He also became a fan of the series. The rest of the group, mostly NG/CG characters, hated his character but they admitted he was playing more true to his alignment.
I love betamax machine.
3?
Coming soon! Hoping sometime next week if everything goes well :)
Most people think they're good, but we're not. We are all neutral. That's why whenever people try to play a neutral character they downgrade their own alignment and thus the character turns evil. Lastly, whenever they try to play evil characters they're just being jerks.
100% you’re exactly right! I was hoping that this video would I’ll get rid of those long held myths. Especially with the evil just being jerk part
Lovely video again. The music is still well picked. If it isnt too much of an ask, could you place the tracks you use in the description? I have a feeling ima keep liking them haha 😅
Oh I actually do them myself! Maybe I should make a long video with all of them so anyone can have them! (Creative comms) Till then if you email me I’ll send you all of my tracks I can find that I have :)
Genuinely good video editing. Sounds were all balanced well too
This is actually so great to hear thank you!!
Good video (expend hit die, recover action surge)
I have to disagree a bit with you here. Fate can be very tactical. The whole mechanic of creating advantages, overcoming obstacles, add options to combat that D&D's RAW just doesn't feature and relies on DM fiat. For instance, during a bar brawl, you may want to throw a chair at an opponent to destabilize them and hit harder. On Fate, you'd roll to create an advantage and, if successful, they create an aspect that will grant a bonus. On D&D you'd have to use improvised weapon rules and... make up something about destabilizing/distracting the enemy for a round, I guess. AFAIK the rules as written in the PHB don't allow for that kind of real-world simulation to take place. So your character might succeed in chipping off a few HP form the opponent using the chair, but that's not what you wanted.
Honestly super happy to see you do! I love hearing other perspectives haha. Honestly I actually really get what you’re saying. These are really good points and honestly you’re definitely right. I do want to say I didn’t mean this video to be as FATE has no rules as much as it did. It definitely has some rules and structure and a lot of tactics. I gotta do better with making videos.
You made a lot of solid points on the video, make no mistake. But it's pretty common to have that view about Fate in that it's all loosey-goosey, no tactics, all theatrics... And it sure _can_ be. But it's a very different way of thinking, and once you get in the headspace, Fate can be incredibly tactical and will definitely properly scratch that wargamer itch in most people.
is this video AI generated?
No lol It actually took me a long time to make.
FATE VIDEO LET'S GOOO!
If you like this get ready ;) I’m gonna make way more FATE vids!!
more FATE PLZ!
Definitely! I plan to make loads more fate content :D
Nice Video. Short, sweet, and informative.
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to keep a few videos here and there straight to the point and fast! How do you like the editing style with banana rather than just walls of text?
@@BananaBreakdown I think I like them since they break it up and stop it looking as complex.
Awesome! Ty!!
How is hide ranked higher than ring mail? Both cap out at a max of AC 14, but hide has the bonus of requiring at least a 14 Dex to do so.
1:30 if there is a Tie: the players decide. I nope'd out after this point; nice click bait, good luck with the channel and try actually reading the rules before making a video about rules next time!
You should actually check the top comment that I pinned 3 weeks ago. I realise I made a mistake. I appreciate your comment and keeping me accountable though.
For those who like bottomless pits of death, or things like a chance to fall from skyships, instead of death you can use a videogame/movie trope of the character (or the whole party) automatically going unconscious (stable) and waking up later in a pile of garbage, or washed up on a beach, or imprisoned by some small creatures.
I absolutely love this omfg how have I never thought about this!!!
Please excuse me if someone has already asked you this. Are you also exurb1a?
Oh wow to be honest I’ve never heard of them until now but I really hear the similarity haha! But no :) their videos look amazing though so thank you for the recommendation!!
@@BananaBreakdown Oh now I feel embarrassed 😅 Well, since you aren't, I'll recommend And Then We'll be OK. I listen to it once in a while. I think it's one of the best pieces of art I have ever experienced
Amazing! I’ll need to see to it! Thank you!!also no need to be embarrassed. We do sound very similar omg haha
I once had a player that continually did stupid things. I don’t remember how they died (because they somehow managed to get themselves killed so often and they always play similar characters) but it was their first character in a new campaign I was running. I had made a plot line based around their character and just as soon as they started it they died. It was pretty feel-bad all around.
Oh man that sucks!! It’s so hard sometimes just to do what’s right and end it. We inherently want to save all everyone haha. But I’m sorry you must’ve put so much work into it
… did your character die or are you sending this to the player who’s character you just killed?
Hahaha 😉
I don't think Fate eschews rules in favor of the narrative. It has rules, but those rules are more about the narrative than about the tactics. If anything, Fate's rules are like a structured set of tools to create the right homebrew for your setting as you need it (in D&D, if a room is on fire it's about squares having flames and propagating outwards or something like that, in fate it's well, let's see, we could model this as a location tag but then how the tag intersects with the characters depends on fictional positioning, like "I catch fire, but I get a reroll point for having chosen to do that" or a negative modifier on some roll because of the danger, or something else depending on what the characters are doing. You have the rules to create any of those, but you need to decide which to do based on what makes sense in the story... and it's effective, because it lets you model the game around your ideas, but it's also harder to do on the spot.)
You said it so well! That’s what I was trying to explain but I don’t think I did it in the best way. You really did explain it in such a great well. You have a lot more “feeedom?” I guess it’s so hard to explain haha
Thank you for making these!
Thank you for commenting!! It really helps the algorithm :)
Best explanation of fate i have seen on yt
This is such an awesome comment!!! Thank you!!! What a beautiful thing to say!
It’s also a scary spell for villains. Given the health of a commoner a villain can just walk into town and split their magic missiles one to each commoner and insta-kill each of them. Players couldn’t even stop it.
100% Ngl I’ve actually had a villain do this haha
as a great wizard once said: "magic missile never misses"
Counterpoint: shield
You have a valid point here haha
Its the best way to get rid of Mirror Image too.
Didn’t know this!! How awesome!
This doesn't feel like a legitimate comparison between two systems, it feels like an advertisement for FATE. "See how crunchy and complex and nerdy D&D is? Well FATE is just like, so easy and casual!"
That’s a good point. I just rewatched it with that in mind and I really do see how my bias may have influenced the video. I’ll need to not do that again. Really is not an ad but I can see where you get that from. I’m just aware most of my audience already knows what d&d is so I tried to explain why I think FATE deserves a shot but it came off more like FATE is better. I’ll do better!
@@BananaBreakdown I have enormous respect for those who take criticism well and can admit fault. Good on you, and that comment alone has me excited to see what your next content looks like. Good youtubing, sincerely 👍
Mate I appreciate you so much. People like you, make my videos better. You make me better! I have a new perspective now and that helps me so much! So thank you. You literally made my week just wanna let you know that :)
I am the GM and I want to switch my gorup from Pathfinder 1E to Fate Core, but keep the campaign running because my players are very invoved in the stories and attached to their characters. They are lvl 7 and encounters start to become too complex for my players, that are not really into complex rules and I will be having less time to prepare statblocks in the future. I know this is a complex and advanced topic, but could you cover it in a future video?
Honestly this is an amazing idea for a video haha I would definitely love to cover this. How to port your rpgs to others would be such a good idea! Honestly it might take me a little bit of time to write the script cause it is a bit complex but this is genuinely so good! I’d really love to do this!
Not to ruin BB's fun, but to get things started quickly, you could make each character's class (and potentially race) an aspect, then give them 1 to 2 stunts based on their favorite class features. If anything amazing or hilarious has happened in the campaign, those could become additional aspects. So for a barbarian, you might have aspect "Barbarian" which could be invoked while fighting (or compelled while getting tricked), a stunt for Rage ("Because I'm a barbarian, once per scenario I get +2 when I'm Forceful" or some such), and maybe another aspect like "I tore the goblin king's head off with my bare hands". This can be invoked for intimidation, or compelled in polite society, if the police are investigating you, or if the goblin king's allies are trying to find you.
There are a TON of official settings available for Fate, as PWYW. While some are more appealing than others, depending on what you are looking for, they all are good and showcase the flexibility of the system. You can find a lot of interesting add-on rules in those publications for your own settings.
