i read a few landscaping magazines from the 1920s and 1930s and Percy Cane garden landscape designs were prominent. Two in particular that I especially recall were the following: Percy Cane highlighted a "A small city garden created for clients who had their city townhouse situated in a 1 acre property in the West End of London" I bet that property is no longer there in 2024. Then a huge new garden to suit a new art deco property - it included a winding route for a leisurely morning ride on the horses, a new tennis court with a new court surface (as already installed by.... - and went on to name which royal families had installed this new surface on the court instead of lawn). Then there was the pool, again with a special set up so the water would always be crystal clear (I think they meant chlorine - but did not spell it out) AND then the kitchen garden with access via the kitchen door to outside. Then the rose garden. Must have been incredible. And an advertisement advertising a proposed luxury tour. The Advertisement was in a late 1938 edition of the magazine. The proposed luxury garden tour was to take place in August 1939 in Germany - where many outstanding private German garden estates would be visited. I guess that garden tour never took place in August 1939.

This gives me memories of walking across fields on a small dairy farm as a child, the swallows flitting by as i disturbed the insects from the grass.

Just come across this channel, i have to admit i never knew Sharpham Estate existed. Were you inspired to go down this path by what has been achieved on the Knepp Estate in Sussex.👍

I have attended 2 Retreats at Sharpham and besides the beauty and benefits of the retreats themselves, whilst there we were given the opportunity to walk, explore and enjoy the land and its inhabitants. Sharpham is such a beautiful and very precious part of the landscape in Devon that must be preserved, cherished and cared for at all costs. Especially when witnessing just how much has been lost throughout the Blessed Isles (UK), The Re-wilding of the Sharpham estate demonstrates what can be done in a relatively short space of time. For anyone who hasn't been to Sharpham I cannot recommend doing so highly enough. It is the perfect setting to not only find and rejuvenate yourself but also to enjoy Mother Nature in all her wonderment.

Wonderful video. If you've never been on retreat to Sharpham, then go. It is a beautiful place.

It’s such a special place

Beautiful...of the many places I have travelled throughout the world I have never felt as connected with nature as I did during a retreat at Sharpham...I was lucky enough to have a kingfisher come really close to me in the reeds and I spent ages examining a cricket in the veg patch. I return to those images again and again. I am so happy that you have undertaken this re-wilding project and it will inspire me to do the same with my patch of land here in the New Forest.

Hello Frank, I have fond memories of this time last year at the Coach house. Your exceptional skills at silly o'clock a.m Qigong with massing Ravens, Rooks, Crows ? Singing, Singing bowl, humour and warm disposition. Since then I've actually moved to Ashprington. With a few disabilities I don't know if I could be considered for a voluntary role somewhere in the system. I've been attending the barn many times over past 15 years and although now living only a mile away will be still managing a couple of bathing house stays this summer. I'm not assuming you'll remember me 'Phil' (Tread softly, don't step on my parsnips.. Nantes reflections). If nothing else its great to see you're still in residence imparting Frankness.

It's Amazing, and So Good to See how through the hard work of the Gardening Team at Sharpham , this Area is Gradually turning into a Safe Space for all Creatures Great, Large, and Small. Dan, when I last visited The Walled Garden gave an Inspirational talk about what's going on, in the Veg garden, which has bought a lot of clarity and illumination. A Big Thankyou

As someone who has done a fair bit of menswork over the years, and also mindfulness, I couldn't agree more, Barry, that mindfulness retreats can offer men a great opportunity to explore what 'strength' means as a man. And that we can find a deeper sort of strength by having the courage - and it does take courage - to explore the places within where we feel vulnerable.

Looking good. I'd love to see it in another ten years. Going to be wonderful.

Thank you Frank for sharing this routine. It is a great way to warm up before continuing further practice of qigong or taiji. Also a superb way to start the day if pressed for time as it takes less time than it does to drink a cup of coffee☕ Seeing your movement routine reminded me how much I enjoyed the early morning qigong on the lawns and overlooking the River Dart. Wonderful. I went to a couple of retreats at the barn, and Sharpham House, but that was perhaps 16 years ago. I'm in Australia now. Wonderful time of my life there. I remember the large collection of Alan Watts cassette tapes, but I had no idea who he was. Now he's all over youtube.
