Small Airplane Design Tutorial 23 Propeller Selection
Selecting a propeller for your airplane is not easy because there are many variables to consider. I am explaining what your options are and how to arrive at a good choice for blades, diameter and pitch.

Airplane Design Tutorial 22 Flight control system bearings
มุมมอง 1.3K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
When the aerodynamic design of the airplane is done, it is time to get into the detail design phase. Flight control systems need a lot of bearings. The selections you make will affect, besides safety, the control feel in flight, durability and maintenance. I am presenting the various types along with advantages and disadvantages along with some other control system considerations.
Airplane Design Tutorial 21 Structural Fatigue
มุมมอง 2.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Metal fatigue is a form of structural damage that accumulates over time and can result in failures from cracks. Aluminum airplanes are particularly affected. I am explaining what structural fatigue is, which materials are the most susceptible, when and where cracks are likely develop and what can be done during the design phase and operation of the airplane to minimize the chance of fatigue fai...

Flight testing new aircraft is risky. I believe that those involved in flight test need to share the lessons they learned to keep others from making the same mistakes, to spread information on test techniques and show ways to promote safety. There does not seem to be much publicly available information on flight testing that is useful and easy to understand. Aircraft homebuilders are mostly on ...

    13:19, your suggestions for static WOT rpm: There is a video by Jonas Marcinko (th-cam.com/video/HIT3e1QgphA/w-d-xo.html) where the WOT static rpm is a bit higher than level-flight WOT rpm for some pitch settings of the newly installed ground-adjustable Eprop propeller. I presume the narrow-bladed propeller blades go into a relatively low drag stall state when revved up on the ground.

    On my electric-powered radio-controlled models, I try to use a prop that has a diameter-to-pitch ratio (D:P) of at least 1.5:1 and no more than 2:1. This provides good acceleration on takeoff, good cruise speed, and longer flight times.

    Very interesting. Of course in a real world excercise in cleaning up the airframe, as you do at the end of the vid, you would add to the the weight and cost, particularly the retractable gear. This would add to the drag and therefore be be a trade-off rather than a clear win. All design is about balancing trade-offs.

    Composites are different, e.g., fatigue of glass-fiber composite is similar to aluminium alloys. Usually in general the less prone to fatigue just because of higher safety factors fir composites

    I might have missed it but the rudder is very important for countering adverse yaw when using ailerons to roll. The only exception I have found was where spoilerons were used instead of ailerons as was tried with the American Eaglet homebuilt glider I have flown, and also used on the Mitsubishi MU2.

    I have a question. When configuring a tandem wing aircraft on a straight cylinder fuselage.....can both sets of wings be on the same mid wing axis or does the front wings need to be lower than the rear? I have have seen RC planes with both sets of wings on an equal high wing axis but does this also apply to full sized aircraft?

    • @sonjaenglert
      @sonjaenglert ปีที่แล้ว

      The vertical separation of the wing does not matter much, it is more important to space them out longitudinally. A Canard airplane is a bit like this, with the front "wing" at the same height as the main wing. But the rear wing will always be affected by the flow from the front wing.

    • @HermitagePrepper
      @HermitagePrepper ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonjaenglert thank you for the answer. So to be clear they can be on the same Axis as long as they are far enough apart? Also, could you do a video on the specific benefits of particular wing, tail and fuselage shapes and configurations? You seem very knowledgeable on these topics. Btw the plane I am designing is a fictional fighter plane with a radial engine, straight cylinder fuselage and mid-wing tandem wing design. The plane itself is described in my story as "slow but graceful and maneuverable" as both sets of wing flaps can be used to control pitch and roll. I would enjoy a video regarding a tandem wing configuration of this sort
