Viewing Banjo Tooie as a metroidvania and not as a Collectathon game makes the experience much better. The game would be considerably better if it embraced its true identity by adding even more metroidvania elements. They should allow the player to teleport to any Warp Pad of any of the worlds at any time. Adding a map would also be very useful both to mark items that cannot be collected yet due to a lack of a special skill. And to better visualize the connections between the worlds, emphasizing this aspect of the game.

Lowkey I don’t usually comment but this video resonated with me so much. I picked up Acnh again about 5 months ago and restarted my island to see my true feelings, around the same time I decided to create a new acnl save file as well. Replaying new horizons I really tried to love it, I tried to actively play it, but things to do always ran out so quickly. I didn’t even get KK on the island. However I still actively play new leaf. There’s just such a difference and I really hope the next game brings back more of the life simulator roots.

I was BUZZING for the DLC until i realised it was just...more decortaing. Wild World was my first and im gutted so see what its become

I remember playing the original AC with my siblings. We all had our own memory cards and we'd often sneak into one another's towns to get fruit or mess around. Not only was there a threat of villagers leaving, but there was that sense of betrayal when a villager left your town to live at someone else's. It also had errands that asked you to visit another town, which was nice. I played Wild World, and it was great. I didn't care much for City Folk, and New Leaf was my favorite. When you stopped being a regular villager and became "The Mayor," or "The Island Rep." and did EVERYTHING on the island, it started to lose its charm for me. New Leaf felt like it had a decent balance, but I missed being a regular villager too.

I was most hurt by the adamant refusal to consider families on one console. Not including a way to transfer or share the powers of the resident representative with other players seriously hurt the game’s longevity with my sister and I. A missed opportunity to have a truly multiplayer animal crossing. Maybe set up an online town with select friends and go ham with everybody having the powers of the representative. Maybe next time. And next time, I will wait for the verdict from fans who have similar tastes and takes in the series as me before buying.

As someone who played new horizons first with no expectations, I fucking love new animal crossing infinitely more. It’s one of the most enjoyable and instantly nostalgic games I’ve ever played. But it’s tainted by how people feel the need to compare it to old animal crossing because I can’t even play old animal crossing cause it’s just completely disappointing. I’ve tried new leaf but it’s just not enjoyable and it’s hardly the same game. So it’s about perspective and frankly I hate the comparison at all. They almost can’t even be put into the same category imo because they aren’t the same. As I play new leaf I just am annoyed at how overcomplicated everything is and I can’t get invested in shit when I can call nothing my own but the shitty version of custom designs that it has. I’m just pissed at how people can’t have perspective and keep whining about how they removed their favorite random ass character. If you wanted the old games again just play the old games. Playing the game and just sitting in the place you created hard at work as the sun goes down at 5:00 pm and you just look up at the sky and appreciate the game and the furniture you’ve placed down around to make the island your own is just not the same in new leaf. And here you are just dogging on the game cause it doesn’t have Dr reaction and your villagers aren’t realistic enough. If you want realistic friends then get them in real life instead of pissing on this game for it. And before you call me out for being pissed off can you blame me? You’re comparing an experience that is amazing if you just try to appreciate it to what is basically another game and saying that it sucks because it the games aren’t the same.

I enjoy New Horizons because I personally enjoy busy work and decorating, but as someone who grew up on Population Growing, there’s no ignoring how it feels like Animal Crossing got a lobotomy for NH.

I think your analysis is solid. Of course, my judgement might be scewed, because I loved Tooie (not as much as Banjo Kazooie... But I still spent like 200 hours on it). But like you, I cannot be sure why it's hated as much as it is... but your hypothesis seems like a well reasoned guess.

Someone did a video on this; the reason why the game is so divisive is because the amount of backtracking you do in the game is based on a random number generator. You can get a good Jinjo seed and never need to do it, but more likely you'll get a bad one that has you needing to do it very often. Basically, some people are literally playing a worse game by no fault of their own.

i love banjo-kazooie, and i love banjo-tooie even more, but sonic adventure 2 blows both games out of the water that shit is a masterpiece go feed your chao

I started with AC on the Gamecube and played every iteration after (except for pocket camp). I too was excited for NH but I have fallen out of love with it. I agree with all your points. There was a lot lacking. I can’t understand why they did away with the store upgrades! That was my favorite part about the older games.

i always thought this game was too slow and i didnt know about that super banjo cheat. i did a playthrough where i did not unlock the grip grab move and it significantly sped up the movement isntead of grabbing onto every legde you could easily clear with regular jumps. never got around to finishing it but i wonder if its possible without that move

i don't think there are any more updates. i have actually been asked for favors in the game(stuff like catch some specific fish or bug, or give a gift to someone else), but rarely, and the only mini-game i have had is to find a gift on the island.

The problem I have with a lot of counter-arguments in favour of Tooie is that they are based on assumptions that a first time player would never know about and which are hand-waived effectively by telling them that "they're not playing it right". If the Banjo Super Speed cheat makes the game better, then why wasn't it made active by the developers from the start of the game? I don't wanna put the work in to flip the "make game good" switch that only becomes available after trudging through a half hour of character intros and mini-bosses. The whole Metroidvania thing is also used frequently as a defence by ardent fans in that it's a way to excuse its back-and-forth quests, ability-gated challenges and generally slower pace. But if we're judging Banjo-Tooie as a metroidvania, there are arguably much better ones out there that boast player-motivated backtracking with broader options and more organic signposting based on wordless intuition; no NPCs pop out of the ground and tell the player "you can't do that yet!" and the backtracking is usually far more extensive than walking across a single area multiple times as different characters just to open a door that leads to one minigame. Tooie was arguably more influenced by PC point-and-click adventures like Lucasarts' Monkey Island series which also had players traipsing back and forth across multiple locations, setting up the pieces for chain reactions that would grant access to new areas and quests. "Metroidvanias" were also relatively new and wouldn't truly earn a place on the map after Symphony of the Night opened the sub-genre up beyond Nintendo's Metroid and Zelda series (Zelda was actually a much bigger influence on SotN and even Dark Souls!), so I argue that while Banjo-Tooie was certainly toying around with ambitious design ideas that were admittedly ahead of their time (I'll give you that), those ideas hadn't yet been fully scrutinised, which is what led to the final game feeling like a lesser example of the sub-genre. If Banjo-Tooie were made today with the benefit of hindsight and all the design lessons that were established since, I say that we would have a much better game that more fully delivered on its lofty promises without the frustrations that split the fanbase today. That way, we wouldn't need a super speed cheat to make it good, because it would already be good.

MY niggle with the endless love for kazooie over tooie, comes in the form of mods, custom campaigns. ...and they are ALL made, ONLY for kazooie. this is BAFFLING. removing the levels from the discussion, tooie HAS the better banjo controls. faster swimming, the billion egg types, extra pad types, mumbo as an option, the ability to GRAB LEDGES, all ignored out of.... I dunno, spite? I just don't get why you'd make extra levels for the inferior banjo, when ledge grabbing is RIGHT there. as for the end question.............no

The thing about Metroidvanias is they usually have a map screen. I would get lost in this game all the time. And that classic Metroidvania feeling of "ooh, I know where I can use this" when you get a new ability is seriously diminished when you can't remember how the heck to get there. I'd also say the backtracking isn't just between worlds (which I think is made much worse for the reason I talked about), it's also stuff like: finding a Mumbo pad -> going to Mumbo's skull to swap to Mumbo -> going back to the pad to watch a cutscene -> heading back to the skull to swap again -> and finally heading back to the pad to make use of the spell. Playable Mumbo is a sham! And worst of all, Grunty doesn't rhyme. Anyway, it's a pretty good game.

The instant gratification ruined New Horizons.

I sucked it hard and passionately with 6:45 classifying wario land 3 and 4 as a bastardvania, it's metroid-like but it doesn't have all the gimmicks to give it the name, but the same dev did work on both. That being said, having an expanded wario land 5 be a banjo-styled collectathon would be insane! Wario and Banjo are my absolute top picks for a new collectathon game. Hell, if banjo had a 2d platformer like wario land 3, I wouldn't mind either. "I want you." "What?"

Tooie was my introduction. I had a situation where I thought the first game was too limiting, as I didn’t play it until the XBLA ports. Tooie’s more open ended design I think ages better than Kazooie’s linearity up to Gobi’s/Freezeezy always felt more restrictive. Jizzing Terydactyland cock gang rise up. 10/10 world design. 😤
