played this game as a kid when i was like 8 and absolutely loved it. Fast forward to when I was 15 and i discovered just about everyone else didn't like it, just because it wasn't what they wanted it to be. I get that a new banjo game that followed the original formula would be awesome, but what we got wasn't that bad either. I think Rare should've released this and then another sequel to the OG games a few years later, I think N&B would've been praised a lot more. I love Johntron, but that review just made me angry. He didn't even try to play the game, bro booted up the intro and tossed it away immediately 😐

I have always preferred the first game in the series to all of the others. Don’t get me wrong, the sequels added many amazing things that drastically improved on the gaming experience, but they messed up the most important aspect for me, the villager interaction experience. Interacting with villagers was simply more interesting in the original game.

ANother thing for me was the PRESSURE to make my iland look amazing, like, I enjoyed the slight customization in new leaf but I never felt like i had failed at making my town look cute until New Horizons, bc tbh im not that patient to make everything perfect to a t, so I just left it

As a fan of the original animal crossing, it's extremely bittersweet to see the direction the series is going. I don't want to be the god of my town, I just want to exist within it so it feels more like a home.

OMFG! FINALLY SOME THAT'S SAYING THE SAME SHIT I'VE BEEN! I mean granted it's been a very long time since I've gamed. And with COTW coming out I'm going to get my first gaming console since PS2 (yes it's been that long) but all the TH-cam videos I've seen of KOF and other games over the years it's like Garou Densetsu & Ryuko No Ken characters mostly are just there (except for Geese he seems to be doing more). Glad I found this channel.

I wish my 3DS still worked, I'd honestly give New Leaf another try. At this point I feel like I'd just make myself sad looking up the cost of getting a replacement 3DS though.

As a kid, moving out and being on your own was an exciting idea that you could only live out at that time through games like Animal Crossing. Things felt so real and so much more involved because you would be running around just catching bugs or fish and then talk to a passing villager, where something unique or quirky happens between the both of you. It felt more like a community you moved into and slowly saw the villagers change around you. Getting letters of when a villager has moved always feels so sad to see, especially when you've formed a connection with them. But it was how life truly was. One second you're catching bugs next to Bea who asks you to get their gameboy back from whoever has it, the next day, she's gone off to god knows where. Such is life.

I agree, Nintendo’s modern games with slow, one at a time crafting, and item durability just aren’t for me. It’s so incredibly boring that I’d rather just be doing work or really anything else. I have no idea how games like breath of the wild are considered good. The item durability makes skipping all combat the optimal way to play and it really exposes how shallow and how much of a waste of time everything in those games truly is.

I do love the lack of having to stress over my villagers moving away and such, and a lot of the other things NH gives you control over. But the game still feels so painfully dry for so many other reasons. It really is missing a lot of charm. The next game is going to be so interesting. Pocket Camp came and went, and NH brought in new players with perspectives on things we have long gotten used to. The franchise has more expectations on it now than it probably ever has, and that could have... all kinds of results.

In RPGs, if the evil choice isn’t actually that evil, it underscores picking the good choice. It’s basically good vs less good. In New Leaf, it’s the same thing. Being good or bad has no actual outcome. It’s just good or slightly less good. It completely lacks the nuance that keeps you coming back for more.

Yes! I've been playing NL for 2 years like almost everyday, and still I'm logging up there before new year just to check on everyone. NL is a GAME, it forced me to PLAY IT: my town had not the best layout, villagers always setting up their homes in places I didn't want them, but the fun came out of playing around that with structures and roads. NH is so sterile and basically not a game in that sense, everything at your feet all the time. Oh, and the inventory works so much better with stylus and touch screen, that's one of those things you can't replicate...

I feel like your 3rd point is the whole problem with modern nintendo in a nutshell. They are trying to give the player so much agency and control over how they play that they lost what made their games once great. Not saying that some of their modern games aren't good, just that they simply are different.

I’ve been so let down my ACNL. It’s the first AC game that I’ve ever reset. I’m even considering selling my AC edition switch altogether because I just don’t use it. Most days I’m still logging on to my 10 year old New Leaf town. I’ve not touched NH since middle of last year and I don’t even feel the pull to play it any time soon.

I really hope one day the modding community manages to add working perfect fruit, add more dialogue. better dialogue randomization

when they announced new horizons. I thought this was my second chance after losing my new leaf copy as a kid. i watched hours of new horizon content before it even came out- i was excited for the fact they actually had knees for god-sake! now though, i spend more time just emulating new leaf for free and my new horizons copy collects dust

The New Horizon's villagers may have no personality left in them, but damn if they don't hate the player too. Talk to them two times on any given they and they just tell you "Damn do you have no one else to talk to?? This video is my experience too and I think the experience of a lot of old school AC players. The brutality of the animals was half the fun of the games. You had to EARN their friendship the hard way, by doing their stupid errands and writing letters to them in the most tedious way possible. And god forbid you lose power or daylight savings kicks in and you adjust the clock. Man I miss that stuff…

They perfected the customisation part of the series, now its time to do it for the social/interacting with habitants part !

You have renewed my appreciation for their more ethereal menu design from older consoles however. I was never a big fan of the Wii, but maaaan that music. That music was something else.

Ed was my gay best friend in New Leaf. The man not so subtly asked to move in with me on multiple occasions. I had several running gags with the guy. In New Horizons, he's just like every other Smug villager. I ended up removing him from the island because he was such a shell of the man I knew. Seeing your favourite villagers from past games in New Horizons, is like finding yourself in an Animal Crossing themed Invasion of The Body Snatchers film. Overall I did end up loving New Horizons. But its lacking a lot.
