I'm Michelle Visser, Simple Living Mentor, creator of the Simple Doesn't Mean Easy podcast, & author of Sweet Maple. I'm on a mission to help folks simplify life.
When we moved from the heart of suburbia to a 200-year-old farmhouse in a rural corner of New England, I realized that living a little more simply can be done in small steps, no matter where you live or what your story is.
After a ton of mistakes -- with kombucha making, maple syrup making, real food cooking, and homesteading -- I realized that most of the things I was learning to do--from baking with wild yeast, to making my own floral-infused syrups and sugars---any one can do, with the right encouragement.
While Simple Doesn't Mean Easy, it's always worth the effort.
SUBSCRIBE RIGHT NOW, join the #SoulyRestedTribe & let's do some simplifying. Together.

So You Think You’re Ready to be a Homesteader?

So You Think You’re Ready to be a Homesteader?
I lived in Alaska for a few years, land of the midnight sun. I was introduced to Eskimo Ice cream, indigenous peoples made it with wild berries for sweetness and whale blubber (lgelatinous) for the fluffy whip, and some of the natives mad it were the Crisco, mostly near cities. So with hard the traumatic adjustment to reduction of their nomadic lifestyle and foraging, hunting and gathering, resulting in sadness as well as SAD (seasonal affective disorder dear), lead to many consequence .
Curious about the sweet gum cause it's one tree I have a lot of
I put a thin coat of iard or bacon grease in my cast iron fry pan & heat it just til it starts to smoke.remove from heat.let cool.that will season the pan,so food wont stick ,then add whatever you want to cook in.butter, olive oil or bacon grease or.i never use teflon.😮😮
😆Every time I do even one small thing , like make butter , I feel like I am homesteading. When i dehydrate mango's and save a couple to make a little batch of mango jam.. I get so pleased with myself. Today I will pick the grapes from my one vine and make some juice . Amazing how many grapes come off this one vine. The joy and satisfaction doing even one little thing that makes me feel like I could be a homesteader delights me. I so wish I would have had goals in life to aim for that lifestyle. I see so many young moms and dads on you tube living off their land and I find it so impressive.
I totally agree... just ONE thing can make all the difference. Also, never think any one of us who you see doing this "homesteading" thing has it all together or is truly self sufficient... at least in my humble opinion... i talked about this some in the next episode of the podcast (episode 137)
You need a pampered chef whipped cream maker! It’s the best for small quantities.
oohhh, i need to look into this!
This is excellent. I know I am grateful and that I have blessing in my life. However something in me is amiss ! Listening to you is ministering to my heart for different reasons. I needed this moment ,this early morning listening to the contentment in your voice ! God Bless you.
oh my, this makes me so so happy. I'm so grateful that this encouraged you today
My dog loves liver bites from costco.. It is his all time favor food ; which we usually sprinkle a few pieces on his meals . I equally make his food or buy meat and vegie patties from a family business.
love it
Love RuthAnn I follow her and love all the wisdom she is a very hard worker
Just subscribed! Great advice and beautiful zinnias! I really appreciate that you don't yell, and your voice is lovely. I'll go check out more of your videos!
Awwww, thank you! So glad you're here!
It’s funny how we remember things when we were little, but at that specific time we were not trying to remember. In my case I used to watch my grandmother prepare dinner every night because I was always at the kitchen table doing my homework. To this day, I can cook everything she made. The smells and the recipes while I prepare them reminds me of her. I miss her a lot, and the memories of her are always with me.
oh how sweet. She sounds like a very special lady.
Could you sell samples? See if they too hard to eat or not, like them banana chip things. If too much problems there, that's okay.
Just found your podcast great information. I’m learning about air circulation myself with my plants this year didn’t get very much rain, but there is a real thing with having air circulate.

Hmmm, I hate government interference in my food and food info. I wish all fast food would go back to tallow for fried foods. I rarely eat fried foods or visit fast food stores. I'm in the food biz and have culinary school background for food, b&p, and 7 yrs as a chocolatier and many nutrition courses. I hope these subsidized ingredients change and we get back to real food..
Please consider using a microphone. The quality of your videos would be so improved. A lot of background noise. I like your content and don't want to miss a single word. Thank you.
Zinnias are my favorite flower! I grow them every year. Beautiful garden.
Thank you!! I really like your video and the tips. It really helped me understand what is going on with my herbs and garden. Very inspiring!!
I enjoyed the walk through your garden. I love zinnias, too! Do you get powdery mildew on yours? I'm in New England, too, and have noticed some on mine.
How lovely to have so much land to grow things , to walk on , to breathe in the fresh air in open space. Wonderful.
we are blessed. But it wasn't always this way... we used to live on .19 acres (as in less than 20% of 1 acre) in a very congested area, on the odd-shaped tip of a cul-de-sac. But honestly we loved life there too... it was just a very different season

Yes, cows have caul fat too
yes! I love it

You Have kind eyes Michelle... I am a new subscriber Love the content... From Long Island New York.
are you a sugarmaker?
Thank you! I never would’ve thought there was specific things you can do to keep fungus from killing your plants. I’m going to have to try that with next year’s garden.
for sure! you have to be diligent but it definitely keeps fungus at bay, or at least from taking over. Let me know your results next year!

Do you have a recipe for Sugar Cream Pie or is that just an Indiana thing?
The things you can is different than the Englishers.canning your potatoes and baked beans and i think there was a. Couple other things also
My uncle always said there was 2 parts of a hog that you couldn't eat, the tail and the squeal
haha I love that! Never heard that one. :)
Am novice on UTube. Where do I find the suggested soil products, please?
does this link work for you? soulyrested.com/soil/
My mom had a rule at the table that we had to take at least 3 bites of everything served. She often softened the edge of that rule by making a large amount of mashed potatoes (which we loved) with meals where she served things we abhored. She encouraged us to eat each bite with some potatoes. It worked well. I learned to enjoy green vegetables after eating them with potatoes over my early years.
I have sooo many questions about so many things... I don't know where to begin! UGH! One day I'll organize my brain and get a list going! LOL
😃
How to identify these trees?
Sweet Maple goes into great depth. terrific-cherry-777.myflodesk.com
Does this not grow wild in NH?
it does, but the roots tend to be tiny when you forage for it in the wild. When I grow them in my garden I have more control
Growing up, we would get our lard in 5 gallon tins and we just kept it in our unheTed basemen I was reminded when you were talking about picky eaters and you mixing homemade and store bought ketchup My partner used to be very picky and Brussel sprouts are my favorite and I would say he had to eat 5 halves and he would. The lemon butter I put on them helped.
My husband says I can make gravy everyday and it never taste the same, not that it isnt good, just doesnt taste the same... I dont follow a recipe...
I haven't consumed pork for 22 years, and for good reason.

Oh yes please do more about fresh milled flour podcasts. What recipes do you use?
Michele is thought the fresh milled flour lost part of the nutrition within 48:hours. So i thought it was supposed to be milled and then baked with.
Love your voice, so calming
Flour
Oh one more comment. I too am grinding my own wheat to make flour im so glad to get more information on fresh milled flour
Michelle im so glad to find your TH-cam channel. Ive been following your podcast for over a year. Im delighted to find more of you.❤️
Bundles. Love all the information here from PEI Canada. I have been dehydrating tomatoes even tried making pizza sauce. Love learning new things
Ruthann you made me think of making pasta. We had sheets laying on the bed and floor to dry. We made pot pie and wide noodles. But when I say I'm making pot pie. People think I'm making those things that come out of a box. But I'm making a pot of chicken broth. Have it come to a boil add the pot pie noodles, chicken, onions in layers. Stir so pasta doesn't stick. Cook till noodles are cooked. You are really making me hungry. Born and raised in York, Pa till I married and my husband went into the service.
Bundle please! Sometimes doing hard things is challenging - I suppose that’s what makes hard things hard?
