Along with Don Giovanni, the best known role of the King of the Basses. There is such joie de vivre in his singing, his diction is a dream and the voice in unique in it's richness and sonority. He is still the record holder for performances of Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera and appeared in seven of their Saturday afternoon broadcasts over the years, though I assume this is from one of his studio recordings of Nozze. Thank you for posting this gem of a performance by my favourite bass.

Eleanor was such a versatile artist. She sang Donna Elvira and Donna Anna, the Countess and Fiordiligi, Violetta in Traviata, Elisabetta in Don Carlo and Tosca. She graduated from Sophie to the Marschallin in Rosenkavalier and created the title role in the Met's first ever production of Arabella. Samuel Barber wrote the title role of Vanessa for her and she was also the Met's first Marie in Wozzeck. That's quite a repertoire! This is beautifully sung. Is it from the live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in 1955 or a studio recording?

THE INFORMATION GIVEN HERE IS MISTAKEN, THERE IS NO RECORDING OF TOSCA MADE BY CALLAS IN 1957. CALLAS recorded Tosca in 1951, under De Sabata, with Di Stefano and Gobbi, and in 1964, under Prêtre with Bergonzi and Gobbi, from which this "vissi d'arte" was taken. In 1957 her voice was in great shape, though in some recordings one hears the fatigue of it, given the incredible demands she imposed upon her voice. HERE IS THE LIST OF IT, in chronological order: Barbiere recording, Sonnanbula recording, Bollena at La Scala, Ifigenia at La Scala, Lucia in concert form at Rome, Sonnambula in Köhln, Turandot recording, Manon Lescaut recording, concert at Herodes Atticus (Trovatore, Forza, Isolde, Lucia, Ophelia) Sonnambula in Edinburgh, Medea recording, Dallas concert, (Entfürung, Puritani, Macbeth, Traviata, Bollena), Ballo in maschera at La Scala, ....THAT WAS HER SEASON 1957.
