The world of Little Nightmares is filled with Residents of all shapes and sizes, each disturbing in their own way. But...where exactly do they come from? In this video, I present three possible theories that may provide an answer to this lingering mystery.

WOW! Bravo.
Being as tho these places are fueled by the imagination of these kids would this essentially make them god like the longer they stay?
Thank you Indie, the tiers were very helpful. Thanks all I got to say lol.
Thin man and lady are only normal adults because they were kids that grew duh.
Over a year later I still keep coming back to this video. I love listening to this analysis and at points it’s helped me to get to sleep. Since our creator has such a wonderful voice and great points to make about this beloved game. ❤️
Your part 1 and part 2 video essays are probably the most comprehensive and meticulously crafted and researched videos on Signalis out there
I got the promise ending my first playthrough, probably bc i was constantly low on health and saved every time i picked up an important item and killed as many things as i could without wasting ammo. Want to replay a bit more stealthy and constantly healing for the other endings
U think theres a future where we can see this game finally made?
Have patience man the game really isn’t that far away
I always figured that the Eye came to the world and overpowered the will of the adults before it twisted their forms. And as for the children? It had absolutely no use for those so it set about making the abominations that were once the adults delete them all. The Eye is not completely bent on this goal simply because it views the children as a minor pest infestation at best. So some manage to escape immediate doom. When a child did somehow get the Eye's undivided attention, the entity made sure to make them suffer more than anyone had ever suffered before. For the very audacity of thinking they could raise a hand to it.
The Eye is terrifying because it completely does not care. The only emotion it's seen showing is rage as it shows a victim that even in the Bad Place there's an Extra Bad Place if you try its patience.
are these residents... evil???
RESIDENT EVIL REFERENCE?!?!?!
just want to add the first time you make it to the ocean if you head right instead of left you'll find a cave with a dead Elster hand protruding in the dark. Loved your video! learned alot about the game and other things~
Just in case my previous comment got ate somehow, I think Ending 3 is the canonical developer ending, superseding 1 and 2. Ending 4: Artifact are the dev's acknowledging that there will always be an outlier and being self aware of that. But it's also them saying that Ending 3 is the true (intended) ending, as that's the LSTR unit you keep finding every playthrough. Only one LSTR unit corpse is there, and only one can exist. The last one that fulfills the promise and ends the loop. It can't be Ending 2's, otherwise many corpses would be there.
I got the promise ending my first go around, and I have to say, it makes sense for the way I played. I was finding myself not counting my shots as much as I should, because the best obstacle is a dead one. (And I didn't realize I had to torch the bodies.) About midway through the game, I started running around more often, but always identified key targets that needed to be put down. I made it through a lot of encounters with little health, and when I saw an opportunity to top up, I took it. Health items were inconsequential to other items I needed. I was in the yellow, I could burn that patch. More health means more hits I can take. Sometimes, I would take time to rend a path through the horde and indulge in a little carnage. When Elster remembers her promise, I locked in. I didn't care what I spent, or what it cost. I was going to carve a bloody path to fulfill that promise. And when Elster finally made it to the gate, I showed Falke exactly what we do with obstacles. Sometimes walls can make a damn fine staircase. I actually wasn't sure if I had gotten the default ending or not at first. Then I looked it up, read a few posts, and realized that the way people describe the way to get the Promise ending is exactly how I played the game.
I just wanna point out, if you were to "destroy" the moon in a manner depicted in the 7:50 screen shot, very little would happen to earth. Moon's center of mass would stay pretty consistent.... At worst high tide will drop by one or two centimeters, mid tide will rise, a miniscule amount, and low tide could rise a few millimeters. If the moon were instead represented as a littéral disk around earth, then I would have to agree. Unfortunately, so far, that is not the case. I just wanna point out, the asteroid belt kinda makes our solar systems a bit unique. Afaik no/very few extrasolar systems have asteroid fields within their gravitational field. I could easily be wrong. But it seems weird that the fields appear vacant while Jupiter moons are plotted: Arguably, a refeuling base in the asteroid belt is more valuable than one on Europa or titan because you don't have to contecd with Jupiter's gravity field. Instead, you could take advantage of it and reduce any extra solar transit efficiency by 5-20%. In any case, if any humans, IRL or otherwise, EVER have a change of mapping the stars, we need a real chance of mapping our rocks... Will keep updating this comment with new tidbits as I play the game and watch the video (I will not watch the video past a point I arrive in game)
gud
17:55 or may be she's pretending to have a family, I don't remember where I heard but can't the furniture of the nowhere change after sometime? As we have seen with the tower
One thing to note, and something that has likely been addressed elsewhere, is that the word Utopia's literal meaning is "no-where", a place that cannot exist. Nowhere is actually Utopia, but the only Utopia that can exist. It is a "perfect" place where those that want to eat can eat as much as they want, those that want to escape can escape as much as they want, the teacher that wants the perfect classroom can have it. It is Utopia from the point of view of the residents; but Utopia is always built on the suffering of others; a Utopia of feasting is the hell of being consumed for whoever is on the menu. Just my 2 cents.
Is this a utopia (the tv series) reference? /j
this game is amazing
I hope that Ender Magnolia blows up in popularity as soon as it releases! Ender Lilies is amazing… my favorite Metroidvania (yes I like it slightly more than Hollow Knight). Unfortunately due to little marketing, very few Metroidvania fans Ken about it. I learned about it from Rusty (a content creator that usually focused on Hollow Knight). I knew as soon as I saw his video that it would be a masterpiece. Good news is I believe it was some point earlier this year that Ender Lilies finally hit 1 million copies sold. I hope that the years it’s been released will have been enough for word of mouth among the MV community to spread news about how amazing of a game it was so that more people are looking forward to Ender Magnolia on release. If Ender Magnolia sells and reviews really well we can probably look forward to another Ender game. So everyone cross your fingers that word has spread far enough that the sequel to one of the best Metroidvania’s ever created will be releasing in less than 2 months! Imagine if everyone who was waiting patiently (forever) for Silksong choose to scratch their MV itch with Ender Magnolia! Not only are people who like HK are almost sure to like Ender Magnolia, if they hadn’t played through Ender Lilies they will likely play it after Ender Magnolia, realizing how amazing the games are.
Just like your initial video, this is still my core content for bed time haha
surprises me you never talk about how the island paintings must feel for elster... that in her gestalt notes explicitly says she must never see images of coastlines... before leaning the meaning of the paintings, I thought they were original to the game, and were there to represent a very big thing in lilith/elster that is PTSD... you could probably do a full breakdown on every replika unit, and how their original gestalts pass on to them traumas and mental illnesses... I feel for me and a lot of other fans, the other replikas add so much to the horror, because I came to love and care for them and their little quirks and personalities, even being a copy and a copy, a multitude of parts forming a new whole, I wish they could live their lives... but even without the dream corruption, their destiny will never be happy under eusan nation... having so many characters you care about being stuck between horrific eldritch horror, and a totalitarian regime that isn't far from being an eldritch horror in itself is scary to me... there is also a little line about "hiveminds" in the game, which seem to be an ideal goal for the eusan nation, this idea of "perfect union" just like their "perfect language"... in every moment this entity wants to corrupt and remove individuality just like the corruption/radiation from the ariana's desperate scream for help... with the intent to use and control this song of cosmos...
I think the artifact ending and the red eye is there to symbolize some sort of oppression and unreality to it all... just like the 'leave' ending is selfish cowardice, and 'memory' is selfish in attachment, I think 'artifact' is selfless in 'love'... this idea to try and preserve her love for ariane regardless of her own wishes, creating a third dream... the only ending that isn't selfish is to "let go" and accept death, to end the suffering to all others, even if it's clear by the amount of cycles and decay and other endings that they don't want it, it's to respect your loved one's choice and honor a promise...
This clarified a lot, thanks, but I still have a couple of questions: when Frethia "pushed away" her clones, no one was there to take notice of what happened? How could the king just believe everything was fine and done? Also, how could no one notice the fungal growth happening, like that giant pod inbetween the spires?
This really put alot into perseverance, i closed my eyes and imagined it all just as i did listening to the sounds of nightmares podcast series. Tysm.
reality is whatever you want it to be
Seeing the eye in the artifact ending has ruined my day. Nay, my life. I guess it only makes the ending more meaningful. I couldn't play the game because i'm not good with horror games but that story may not be conveyed any other way. Having the ending be tied to how you were playing means you can't change it just because you have hit the finish line too. The game is just brilliant.
its wild how far apart everyone that posts theories to youtube are
The necropolis reminds me of the desert where the north wind monster hunted those kids.
new sub love these theories keep it up
Hey, at 7:19 the booklet picture if from my booklet in one of my post on tweeter/X, even tho i forgot to put my nickname, a credit would have been cool :) + if you asked i could have sent you a better picture haha
Ahhh my bad, lot of sources for this video and I totally forgot to attribute that one. I've added a link in the description, and will be sure to credit properly in the videos themselves should I use it (or anything you've posted, for that matter) again. So sorry about that!
@indiexplorergames no problem and thanks for your inderstanding ! If you need anything for your video, datamine or more about this booklet for example, feel free to contact me back ! :)
About Elster being copied (in the 0:55:00). I believe that our Elster and that in the mine are one and the same. If Ariane ended up in the mine, the unit would never be used for deep space exploration and instead would be sent to survey the mine. But since Ariane signed into the deep space exploration program the Elster unit was used there and therefore refused to be sent to the mining facility. So basically in alternate reality where Ariane would end up the mine, Elster would too. That's why when Falke starts dreaming on behalf of Ariane other people know about Elster as local.
0:48 canon: truth to a set story cannon: *danger be ye on the far end, lay down yer gold or lay at the bottom of the sea!*
I feel like we should assume every ~Otherworld~ in fiction is the collective unconscious until stated otherwise.
I would argue that the Pretender is more so just a "Baby Keeper"; that is, she's set to grow up into a Keeper herself, inheriting The Nest or some other grand territory for herself once she gets old enough. Especially if her parents (or whoever is raising her) is already among the Keepers themselves. Like the Lady and Thin Man, the Pretender and her caregiver have human sapience instead of just base instinct, so it's pretty feasible that at least one Keeper chose to start a family in the Nowhere and biologically reproduced to birth the Pretender as an "heir" born in the Nowhere itself. On a separate note, I'm not quite sure that the Monster Baby qualifies as a "Resident" at all. Obviously, the game's full details are unknown yet, but I wager that the Monster Baby is less of a living structure and perhaps more of just a weapon gone wrong. It's been hinted that the Monster Baby is (at least one of) the culprits behind the Necropolis' abandoned state with its petrified population, so it could also just as easily be that the people of the Necropolis themselves built the Monster Baby as a defensive weapon only for the Monster Baby to revolt and destroy them all instead (similar to MatPat's theory about the Wither from Minecraft). Similarly, the Bullies _MAY_ not be children's organs stuffed into clay, but rather just empty and inanimate clay dolls with no organs at all. It's true that Mono never smashes open their torsos, but it's also true that it could just be that he prefers aiming for their heads. Like with the Mannequins who can still move despite some of them lacking brains and other organs, or the Lady's Shadow Kids who lack organs altogether, the Bullies could also just be hollow clay dolls brought to life by magic. If anything, it would make more sense for the Teacher to skip the tedious process of turning large groups of kids' organs into entire classroom's worth of Bullies and instead just use the Nowhere's magic/supernatural properties to speedily create her classrooms of hollow Bullies instead. Like I said, though, these are just alternative guesses as to the Bullies' nature and rank next to the other monsters, and I concede that I could be wrong. Other than those points, I agree with the theory at large. It makes sense to combine all the major origin theories as one inclusive theory, and it helps with the huge assortment of Residents. Keep cooking!
Also this kind of sounds like hazbin hotel
I’m pretty sure the teacher is Miss Mc Beth
Mayhaps the giant baby is a young eye monster
Although it felt a little derivative of Silent hill, this game was well worth playing, and the Ending is haunting nonetheless.
Wind?!! Wind?!!! Like the North Wind from the comics?!!! North Wind's return??? (mostly jokes)
The podcast was amazing I wish we had more things like that because it was so good I was hooked into the stories ❤ amd it's expands the little 🌙 university it was such a great listen more horror franchises should be taking notes
I think a good portion of the monsters are in fact t based off of kids imagination. When you look at a kid trying to draw a semi realistic drawing, it's always off balance and frankly bad. Some of the monsters like the teacher (best example for me) the wrinkles are heavily defined and the face is very odd shaped, more circular than oval shaped. The thing that drives this theory home for me is the neck. As a kid and even to this day I cannot draw a neck for the life of me. It is always to short or too long, and in the teaches case too long. Such drawing can give some kids nightmares, which could lead to the existence of such a creature. That's all I really have to say.
A little disappointed at the fact lilies story isn't being continued but still excited for this
Can someone please explain me where did the second Elstr come from?
The second LSTR unit was requisitioned by Sierpinski to do survey work in the mine, and so she was sent there from one of the other planets - I talk about it more in Part 2, since the post-launch patches added a fair amount of new information regarding this topic!
@indiexplorergames thanks.
incredible breakdown of the game. thank you!
I find that the only creatures left out of this analysis is the “wildlife.” Crows, Leeches, the endlessly strange fish and other creatures used as food for the guests on the Maw, and the animals referenced in the Hunter’s area, his taxidermied deer and a big model of a fox used during a games fest when Little Nightmares 2 was coming out. I don’t know exactly where animals fit into all this, given they rarely display any form of truly evil tendency. Part of me wonders if they were there all along, or were created/taken and influenced by more powerful Natives, or if they have to follow similar rules to the Residents and Visitors and can be taken if deemed too cruel or too innocent (by animal standards, anyhow). I haven’t kept up with the lore for a while, so if any explanation’s been given I would like to hear it.
Indeed! The animals of Nowhere are a very interesting subject in their own right, one that I may visit in the future...
I have a theory about the comics: I think the lady was once beautiful but one day because of the mirror man she transformed into an ugly woman.
